My father sold me to the Mafia King

Chapter 51

Carlos’s point of view

”Molesters!”

I repeated the word in disbelief, looking at Robert, trying to grasp the audacity of that girl.

She didn’t stop there; she called me a maniac too! And in front of whom? In front of the man everyone fears. Robert smiled with a provocative coldness and said:

”Sit down, my friend... sit.”

But the blood was boiling in my veins. I pulled my weapon from behind my waist, swung it in the air with resentment, and said:

”You know? I wanted to put a bullet inside her head with this weapon right now!”

Robert’s features suddenly changed; the smile vanished and was replaced by a gaze as serious and sharp as a dagger. He said in a decisive tone:

”Carlos, you know that this matter does not exist in my world... I will not allow you to kill a woman.”

Feelings of rage took over me; he always sees me as less noble than him because, in his eyes, I am ready to kill women, even though I have never done so in my life. I said to him with suppressed anger:

”Robert, I don’t kill women either!”

He wiped his forehead with his hand and replied with a direct hit:

”But you are ready for this at any time, Carlos.”

Robert was my partner and friend in drug deals; although I don’t usually befriend business partners, Robert was an exception.

Despite his young age, he possessed a weight and prestige that forced you to respect him, even if he sometimes ignited the fuse of my anger with his endless provocations.

I put the weapon back in its place and sat on the chair, then asked him out of curiosity:

”What is the reason for this strange calmness of yours? Didn’t she insult you too? She pointed my cane at your face with an explicit threat!”

He stood up from his desk with a suspicious calmness, poured whiskey into two glasses with deliberate slowness, and then said:

”Because I keep my response to her move in another way, Carlos.”

He handed me the glass and added:

”Patience, my friend, is what makes things more exciting.”

I took a sip from the glass, then looked at him for a long time and said:

”Robert, you never deal with girls here. I’ve known you for years; I haven’t seen any girl in your office, and you haven’t spoken to me about one of them at all.”

I noticed his features stiffen slightly, so I continued boldly:

”Why are you doing this for this girl? Why are you involving yourself in these trivial problems?”

His posture changed suddenly; signs of tension appeared on him as if I had thrown a truth in his face that he was trying to escape.

His treatment of Julie was truly strange; I had never known it in him before. He sipped his glass in one go and said while pouring another:

”It’s just entertainment... this place is monotonous, and she breaks the monotony.”

I nodded in agreement; Julie indeed breaks the monotony of this big prison with her rebellion. I said to him:

”You’re right, she entertains me too.”

Then I remembered something and asked him slyly:

”And why were you telling her to kill me? And that I wanted to buy her?”

Robert replied in a low tone and a question carrying a lot of cunning:

”And did I lie in what I said?”

I said to him, trying to clarify my point of view:

”No, you didn’t... but what I found truly strange was that you told her that at the moment she was threatening to kill whoever buys her! Were you actually pushing her to kill me?”

He replied with scathing sarcasm:

”Why? Are you afraid?”

Rage began to take over me again; I could no longer stand this disparagement. I said in a sharp and firm tone:

”Robert! What are you saying?”

Robert stepped back a little while smiling, and said trying to soften the atmosphere:

”Calm down, dear Carlos... I’m just joking.”

He was silent for seconds, then took a deep breath and added words that hit the core of the truth:

”But you want her... I don’t understand why you’re trying to hide it.”

I was caught off guard by his question, which was painfully accurate. Yes, I want her, but why do I feel this strange fear of her discovering that? At that moment, I felt that I was not the strong ”Carlos Mendoza” I knew, but someone else weakened by hesitation.

For the first time, I answered with a honesty that stripped me of my pride:

”I don’t know, Robert... but I don’t want her to know about it.”

Robert gave a calm smile, as if he had obtained the confession he had been seeking from the beginning, and said briefly:

”Fine, Carlos... as you wish.”

I tried hard to push the ghost of ”Julie” off the discussion table; mentioning her began to stir a disturbance in me that annoyed me, as if she were a gap in my armor I didn’t want Robert to see. I said, changing the subject:

”The shipment goes out tomorrow, Robert.”

Robert’s features immediately shifted to sharp, business like gaze.

He set his glass down and paid attention, saying:

”Did you solve the problem of the new officer?”

I replied in a tone full of doubt and caution:

”No new officer has come yet, and the shipment is so delayed we can no longer bear it, so... we will take the risk.”

He raised his eyebrow with a disdain that was not without truth and said:

”We are always in danger, Carlos; this is nothing new to our world.”

I sipped a little of the whiskey, feeling its bitterness harmonize with the bitterness of the situation, then said in a low voice:

”This is a bigger danger this time, Robert... the risk this time might cost us more than we imagine.”

Robert rubbed his light beard thoughtfully, his eyes gleaming with a sharp intelligence as he said:

”You know Monroe Gareth, don’t you?”

I straightened up from the shock of the name; who in this country doesn’t know ”Monroe Gareth”?

He is one of the highest and most influential government officials. I replied to him in amazement:

”Yes, and who doesn’t? But why are you asking about him now?”

Robert answered with the calmness of the confident:

”I will talk to him about arranging a safe path for the shipment, to ensure us a crossing free of any problems or inspections.”

I looked at him with confusion and skepticism; the man had moved away from this arena long ago. I said to him:

”But Monroe Gareth no longer deals with these matters, Robert, have you forgotten that? He cares about his reputation now more than ever.”

Robert placed his glass on the desk with a light force that made a clinking sound, and said in a decisive tone:

”No, I haven’t forgotten... but he owes me an old favor, and he will be forced to accept whether he likes it or not.”

I couldn’t hide my relief; if Gareth enters the game, it means the shipment is in total safety. I replied with a wide smile:

”This is great news, Robert! If that’s the case, you’ve removed a mountain of worries from my shoulders.”

Then Robert looked at me, that mysterious smile still etched on his lips, and said:

”I remembered that you brought the desk and the bookshelf... don’t you want to bring them in for her?”

Damn, I had completely forgotten about them! After those scathing insults she hurled at me, I was supposed to smash that bookshelf over her head instead of gifting it to her, but for some reason, that girl made my senses numb and my logic absent.

I said to him in a tone I tried to make sound calm and professional:

”They are outside... tell the guards to bring them into her room.”

Robert smiled broadly, as if reading my weakness clearly, and said:

”So, you are seeking to win her approval now?”

I no longer understood why Robert tried to hit me with my weak point, ”Julie,” every time, and why this constant provocation? Does he enjoy seeing me lose my balance in front of her?

I rose from the chair and stood at my full height, trying to regain my dignity, and replied to him with words that had been brewing in my chest:

”I want to have her while she is laughing, Robert... I don’t want a dead body.”

Then I finished, my eyes shining with a wild desire I could no longer suppress:

”I want her to utter my name with pleasure... not with hate.”

Robert stood up as well, then turned to me, his voice carrying a veiled warning:

”Having that girl won’t be easy, Carlos... never.”

He let out a short, cynical laugh as he continued:

”You saw for yourself how she crushed that man’s head without even blinking!”

In that moment, an unnatural euphoria washed over me, a sense of challenge coursed through my veins like a drug.

Her violence didn’t frighten me; instead, it fueled a desire unlike any I had ever known.

I said, my eyes gleaming with a suppressed madness:

”I am ready to take the risk, my friend... completely ready.”

Robert looked at me with clear bewilderment, as if trying to analyze this sudden shift in my personality; the Carlos he knows doesn’t gamble with his dignity for a woman.

But I didn’t leave him guessing for long.

I stepped closer to him and finished in a voice filled with sincerity and sharpness:

”She makes me feel alive... do you understand what I mean, Robert? She makes me feel alive!”

My words meant that Julie with her anger, her rebellion, and even her hatred for me had awakened senses within me that I thought had died under the rubble of drug deals and blood. She isn’t just a body; she is the fuel I need to feel my own existence.
