One-Eyed Monster

Chapter 37: Chapter 37 A Voice (Part 2)

The encounter with Young Master Hustace in the carriage hadn’t turned Qi Liu’s head. He wasn’t naive enough to believe his fate would be any different from before. His conviction remained firm: every day, he was still making slow progress toward becoming a stableman at the Governor’s Mansion.

However, Young Master Hustace’s smile did change some things. Whether Qi Liu accepted it or not, his situation had, more or less, altered.

Since then, on his journey back and forth to the academy, he no longer had to sit on the lap of his father, the coachman.

The League Guards attending the young master no longer shouted or cursed at him. Even when he was late delivering meals, they never scolded him; at times, they even helped him with his heavy lunchbox.

The wealthy youths striving to get close to the young master now saw Qi Liu in a more complicated light. Their previous simple jealousy had evolved into resentment-tinged envy. Sometimes, these heirs of wealthy families would try to please him with all sorts of rare goods, just to have him put in a good word for them before the young master.

Even some instructors at the academy began to change their attitude towards him. He was no longer a dispensable nobody; he had become a hot commodity, with too many people eager to get information about the young master from him...

His father also hoped he could seize the limited time on the road to make a good impression on the young master and thereby change his destiny...

However, no ripples formed in Qi Liu’s heart. As always, he would offer a smile from time to time.

After all, a voice always lingered in Qi Liu’s ear, guiding his choices. This voice let Qi Liu know that all these changes were merely because people wanted to curry favor with Governor Rostov; they had nothing to do with him, the son of a coachman. What he was experiencing now was fundamentally no different from his father meticulously shoveling horse manure.

Year after year, winter gave way to summer, and after summer, winter returned.

By the age of thirteen, Qi Liu was already proficient in driving carriages. So that year, he successfully stepped towards the destiny he firmly believed in and truly became a coachman. The only difference was that he didn’t take over his father’s position; he simply became Young Master Hustace’s exclusive coachman.

Young Master Hustace was reticent, speaking less each year. He always longed to find someone to truly talk to, but reality was harsh. Few people were willing to genuinely converse with the Governor’s son.

”Young Master is absolutely correct!”

”Young Master, you are amazing!”

”Even the strongest is no match for you, Young Master! You are as celestial as the stars in the sky and as heroic as the legends on earth!”

”Yes, Young Master, I’ll handle it immediately!”

...

Hustace couldn’t feel any sincerity in these words. These praises and sycophantic agreements were like daily meals. He had no choice but to sit at the table and endure them, even when he had no appetite.

To Hustace, Qi Liu was like a snack enjoyed outside of his three daily meals. That indifferent smile of his was like a wheat awn, making Hustace’s heart itch with curiosity.

”No, I’m the same as them. I just know what I should and shouldn’t do.”

Qi Liu’s reply in the carriage remained etched in Hustace’s memory for a long time. ”What should be done” and ”what shouldn’t be done”—it seemed that was precisely what was missing in his life.

Therefore, every time Hustace felt troubled, he would seek out Qi Liu. This coachman’s son was an excellent listener and also a soothing balm.

”Ah Liu, which profession do you think is the best?”

Qi Liu knew he should answer his young master honestly. In his heart, the best profession was a Politician, respected by all, with people at their beck and call. But a voice told him a different answer would be better.

”An Adventurer. I think being an Adventurer is the best—unfettered and free.” He was just a coachman; the young master wouldn’t care about a coachman’s thoughts. The only reason he asked was that he wanted to voice, through Qi Liu, the words he couldn’t say himself.

”Ah Liu, don’t you think that woodcutter, Igor, is an idiot? Why would he refuse to become a Fighter?”

The voice always came at the right moment, without any delay. ”I don’t think so. He’s just doing what he wants to do. He is chopping wood, lighting fires, hunting, and planting flowers. He’s more carefree than any of us.” The voice told Qi Liu that the young master envied the youth named Igor. That youth wasn’t the Governor’s son. No League Guards would follow him when he went out. He wouldn’t be punished for being too loud while eating, nor would anyone send him inexplicable praise and gifts every few days. In other words, the young master wanted to become Igor.

So, during those years, Qi Liu watched the young master clumsily interacting with Igor: Whatever Igor did, the young master would follow. If Igor trained Physique Techniques, Hustace would too. If Igor studied Spellcraft, Hustace would too. If Igor chopped wood, Hustace would too...

The voice told Qi Liu that the young master fervently imitated Igor merely to strengthen their bond. The young master feared that approaching Igor too rashly would make Igor become like the sycophants around him. And those followers, who had bribed the League Guards with gold coins to form their entourage, nearly destroyed the young master’s plan to get closer.

To please the young master, this group of followers constantly mocked Igor, always comparing him to the young master.

”Well, this woodcutter boy can recognize the Binding Spell too! But compared to the Young Master, he’s way inferior!”

”Look at his horse stance—it’s hilarious! Now, look at our Young Master’s—it’s so good!”

These intermittent, backhanded compliments, seemingly praising the young master, actually made Hustace extremely uncomfortable.

However, the young master couldn’t vent his anger on them. As Governor Rostov’s son, he had to consider many unseen factors connected to his father’s position. Over time, the voice in Qi Liu’s ears grew more intricate. Its complexity was like a Wandering Bard’s harp, its melodies always setting the stage for a captivating story.

”Ah Liu, I heard Igor is going on a long journey.”

”I regret that we can only stay in the academy.” The voice told Qi Liu, The young master’s heart was staging a jailbreak; now, all it needed was a little nudge from reality.

「The whole city soon knew what happened next.」

The young master unleashed eighteen years of pent-up frustration on the Governor. He wanted to go on an adventure, unwilling to remain the obedient boy at the mansion. His rebelliousness after coming of age caught everyone off guard, leading to hurried and chaotic preparations.

Qi Liu was naturally chosen as the young master’s companion. He had no complaints. It was his duty as the exclusive coachman, even though they wouldn’t need a carriage this time. He heard the voice say, Everything you’re doing is essentially the same as meticulously shoveling horse manure. The only difference is that the manure is sent to the fuel yard, while you are helping Young Master Hustace achieve his desire.

Qi Liu didn’t understand where these voices came from.

He only knew that following this voice was the best choice.

”Ah Liu, our pace is too slow.”

”Ahead, we can buy two horses. The roads in the prefecture are not suitable for steam cars. I experienced it last year when I went to the neighboring prefecture to buy horse feed.”

”Ah Liu, why can people still recognize me even though I’m so well concealed...”

”Young Master, there are too many people around you, and each one of them has ’I serve the Young Master’ practically written on their faces.”

”Ah Liu, help me shake off Goding and the others.”

Shaking off Goding would only take a pot of old wine. Those two fools, Bunan and Pifu, wouldn’t know true from false; they’d go wherever they were told...

The two horses ran silently through the night. Qi Liu was a coachman; getting a horse to move quietly was a basic skill for him.

The journey wasn’t smooth. Some unseen forces were always stirring up trouble in the background.

”Young Master, we can’t use our real names anymore. Let’s both go by Igor. That way, we won’t attract attention when we reach Guru Mountain.”

”Young Master, someone is following us. The Invisibility Cloak you brought needs to be used.”

”Young Master, we should swap clothes. The number of people following us has decreased, but one of them seems to be a Hunter.”

”Young Master, I’ll draw off this Hunter. You put on the Invisibility Cloak and head to the foot of the mountain. Find a chance to go up.”

”Don’t worry, Young Master, I know what I’m doing. We’ll meet Igor on the mountain.”

The voice taught Qi Liu how to avoid public attention. It also made him understand that by masking his Spirit Power aura, he could evade a Hunter’s pursuit. Conversely, deliberately emitting his Spirit Power aura could attract a Hunter’s attention. Guided by this voice, Qi Liu made his choices.

He couldn’t judge if doing so was right, only that the outcome always seemed better than the alternative.

Just like at this moment, the voice told him, Say it boldly. Everything you’ve done is what you were supposed to do.

”Lend me an Alchemist and a Wizard. I’m going up the mountain to find the Young Master.”

Sometimes, a person’s change is a matter of chance, but this chance is often the result of countless inevitable occurrences. Some people’s destinies are inherent. We cannot force them, nor can we prevent destiny from presenting us with its many choices.
