American Football: King of the Bay Area

The game had reached a stalemate. After the second passing Touchdown, the San Francisco 49ers’ special teams unit successfully kicked the extra point to extend their lead to 14–7. Afterward, it was as if the game had hit a wall, with neither team able to advance.

Next, the Seattle Seahawks’ offense took the field again. Marshawn Lynch was still the core of the team’s offense, but ”Beast Mode” wasn’t infallible. At the end of the day, Marshawn was still an ordinary man, not the real Superman. He couldn’t pull off a spectacular nine-man-breaking run every single time.

Under the airtight defense of the San Francisco 49ers’ Defense Team, Marshawn’s running efficiency was severely hampered. Meanwhile, Travis’s passing accuracy was still terrible, and he failed to open up the passing game. This made the Seattle Seahawks’ offense incredibly difficult. They barely managed to push to their own 43-yard line before failing to get another first down and were forced to punt the ball away.

Then it was the San Francisco 49ers’ offense’s turn to take the field. Just as the commentators predicted, the Seattle Seahawks’ Defense Team was starting to find its rhythm.

On this drive, the first play was a run. Dixon not only failed to gain any yardage, but he was actually pushed back and slammed to the ground for a loss of two yards.

A pass came next, but two opposing defenders broke through the Offense Line and got to the quarterback for the first sack of the game, resulting in another five-yard loss.

On the final pass, the defenders once again forced a hurried throw. Lu Ke had no time to scan the field and hastily completed a short pass to try and get a better punting position. But the Offense Line completely collapsed, and three players converged on Lu Ke. In his rush, Lu Ke threw toward Logan, and the pass was nearly intercepted—thankfully, only *nearly*.

Three-and-out. The San Francisco 49ers’ first three-and-out of the night.

After that, the animosity of the divisional rivalry began to flare up. The 49ers forced the Sea Eagles into a three-and-out, and the Sea Eagles retaliated with two vicious sacks. The 49ers nearly got an interception, stopping the Sea Eagles at the 36-yard line, only for the Sea Eagles to then force a fumble from Dixon, resulting in a turnover.

In football, any player can fumble the ball, and the quarterback is no exception—a vicious sack from a defender can easily cause a fumble if the player isn’t careful.

A fumble, by definition, occurs after the snap when an offensive player has caught and controlled the ball and is in the process of advancing, but then accidentally drops it. The football then becomes a live ball, and the first player to secure it gains possession for their team. A special case is when the quarterback fumbles the ball due to a tackle or sack before attempting a pass; the same rule applies.

For example, say Dixon takes the handoff from Lu Ke, but then the football is knocked loose by an opponent’s hit, tackle, or sack.

If a 49ers player recovers the ball, they keep possession and continue their drive from the spot of the fumble. But if a Sea Eagle Team player recovers it, it’s a turnover, and their offense takes over from that same spot.

However, if an offensive player fails to catch a pass, or drops it before gaining full control, it’s simply an incomplete pass. Possession doesn’t change. In other words, it’s only *after* a pass is completed that a defender can cause a fumble, at which point possession is up for grabs.

Just now, Dixon had fumbled during a Ball-Carrying Run, and the Sea Eagle Team recovered the ball at the 49ers’ 46-yard line.

The San Francisco 49ers had fought hard to push the ball near midfield, and with that one turnover, all their effort went to waste. Moreover, the Seattle Seahawks’ starting field position was already past the 50-yard line. They only needed to advance a little more to be in field goal range, and if they pushed further, a Touchdown was also possible.

Lu Ke was fuming, but he was helpless.

Fortunately, the Seattle Seahawks’ offense, which took the field next, still couldn’t find its spark. Three carries by Marshawn led the team to a first down, but that was it. The next two runs gained only three yards, and a short pass from Travis for another three brought the Seattle Seahawks’ drive to an abrupt halt.

In the end, they sent out their special teams unit for a field goal attempt. It was a 45-yarder, and the Sea Eagle Team’s kicker, Steven Hauschka, put it through the uprights, scoring three points for his team. The score was now 10–14.

Not giving up more points after the fumble was a good thing for the San Francisco 49ers. But their next offensive drive was still a disaster.

A balanced pass-and-run game is crucial to a team’s offense. These two distinct methods not only diversify the playbook but can also disrupt the opponent’s defensive rhythm. Relying entirely on the pass or entirely on the run just makes the defense’s job easier.

This was precisely why the Seattle Seahawks’ offense kept stalling—it was Marshawn Lynch, Marshawn Lynch, and more Marshawn Lynch. Once the San Francisco 49ers figured out the pattern, defending against them became relatively simple.

Although Lu Ke seemed to be in good passing form today, the run-pass balance was a key reason he could consistently complete his passes. So, on the San Francisco 49ers’ next drive, the play-calling became more complex and varied, with a mix of runs and passes designed to keep the opponent from making an accurate read.

The ideal was rosy, but reality was grim.

The problem was that the team’s number one running back, Anthony Dixon, was clearly off his game. He couldn’t push forward, couldn’t find any holes, and couldn’t show any burst. He had a mere sixteen yards on ten Ball-Carrying Runs, completely failing to get anything going.

What was worse, with the run game shut down, the burden of moving the ball fell squarely on Lu Ke’s shoulders. But once the Seattle Seahawks got a handle on the run defense, they could devote more attention to pass coverage, which further shrank Lu Ke’s passing windows.

And so, the San Francisco 49ers’ offense struggled mightily. The smooth, flowing rhythm from the first two drives had completely vanished. Their entire offense sputtered and stumbled, unable to even cross midfield. The performance was nothing short of a disaster.

”Just as I was saying, this rookie quarterback ultimately isn’t skilled enough. Once his passing is no longer a threat, he doesn’t have the ability to make plays on his own.”

”Number fourteen’s flaws as a rookie quarterback are on full display. He lacks physicality and mobility. The Sea Eagle Team is choosing to blitz heavily, and the moment the Offense Line slips up, he’s left completely helpless.”

”Over the last few drives, he’s taken one sack, one big hit, and been forced into three hurried throws. The San Francisco 49ers’ entire offense is in shambles, they can’t even get past midfield.”

”His inexperience is exposing this rookie’s weaknesses; the composure he had at the start of the game is completely gone. The 49ers’ problem now is that their run game is dead, which in turn has allowed the passing lanes to be shut down. In a situation like this, you need a clutch quarterback to step up and be a hero for the team. But clearly, number fourteen is not the 49ers’ savior.”

”The game has entered a stalemate, and both quarterbacks have serious flaws. It’s looking now like the running backs will be the deciding factor in this game. And if that’s the case, the Sea Eagle Team’s chances of winning are on the rise.”

...

The commentators in the booth all started chiming in, their flustered surprise from the start of the game now gone. A number fourteen like this, a 49ers offense like this—this was in line with their predictions and expectations. The rookie quarterback of Chinese Descent, it turned out, just couldn’t handle the big stage.

The game had returned to familiar territory for them, and they were back in their element. For the players and coaches on the field, however, it was a completely different story.

The first half ended quickly. Neither offense managed to score again, and the score remained at 14–10, with the San Francisco 49ers still ahead.

At halftime, both teams returned to their locker rooms.

The atmosphere in the San Francisco 49ers’ locker room was heavy. There was no joy from having the lead; instead, there was an undercurrent of frustration. No one spoke, no one made a sound. The silence was suffocating.

They all sensed that something was wrong with both the offense and the defense, but being in the thick of it, they couldn’t see the full picture. They didn’t know what the problem was, and this feeling of helplessness and uncertainty weighed heavily on their chests, like a lump they could neither spit out nor swallow.

Jim Hubble stood outside the locker room, not going in right away. He seemed agitated and anxious.

Although the San Francisco 49ers were currently leading on the scoreboard, a 14–10 lead was nowhere near enough to win the game, and it was certainly not enough to defeat that old fox, Pete Carroll.

The two rivals had battled for three years in college. Jim knew better than anyone that Pete was not an easy man to deal with. The slightest slip-up, and he would latch on like a hyena and refuse to let go. You could despise your enemy strategically, but you had to take them seriously tactically. Jim would absolutely not let his guard down.

Right now, there was a problem with the San Francisco 49ers’ entire offensive system. ’But what exactly is the problem?’

’Why did the team score Touchdowns so fluidly on the first and second drives, only to stumble and falter for the rest of the half? Outside of those first two possessions, the offense’s performance has been a complete disaster.’

’Just as the commentators said, if the 49ers can’t make effective adjustments in the second half and the Sea Eagle Team ramps up their defensive intensity, the momentum will shift, and our advantage will quickly evaporate. It’s only 14–10, just a four-point difference. A single Touchdown could easily flip the outcome of this game.’

Not only could the San Francisco 49ers not afford to relax, they needed a serious wake-up call!
