My Sect Is Down to Seven People

Chapter 180: The Door Opened Inward

Qi Qiʼs hand pressed down on his shoulder, twice.

”Sect Master, nothingʼs moving.”

Xu Yan opened his eyes. First he heard his own heartbeat, then he heard the qi in the stone chamber. He braced himself against the stone floor and sat up, his back coming off the ground. The cold climbed half a foot up his spine, then stopped just below his shoulder blades.

”Go back to sleep,” he said.

Qi Qi stayed crouched in the doorway, one hand resting on his knee, face turned toward the outside. The stairs ended here and with them the wind; that lock of his hair had been stuck to his temple for two shichen now, not once stirring.

”Iʼve seen everything there is to see. Let me tell you.” Qi Qi kept his voice low. ”Nobodyʼs come down from above. Not a single torch lit. Someone in the stone chamber turned over—I heard it twice. This door...” He paused. ”Iʼve been watching it, and I swear itʼs watching me back.”

”Doors donʼt have eyes.”

”I know. Thatʼs the thing—it doesnʼt even have the courtesy to have eyes. It just looks at you anyway.”

Xu Yan didnʼt answer. Qi Qi laughed half a laugh, caught himself, and glanced back into the stone room, afraid heʼd woken someone.

”Iʼve handled plenty of locks in town,” he added in a low whisper. ”Thereʼs one kind you canʼt pick. Not because itʼs built tough—because the keyholeʼs not on the outside.”

”Go to sleep.”

”Iʼm lying down.” Qi Qi pulled his legs into the doorway, groped his way to his spot, and flopped down beside Shi Po. ”If youʼre tired, Sect Master, just sleep. Iʼve got this watch covered. Donʼt you go keeping it for me.”

Xu Yan made a sound of assent. Qi Qi was asleep almost before heʼd stretched out—his breathing skipped shallow once, then sank into the deep, thoughtless sleep of someone whoʼd paid for rest with his body.

The chamber fell quiet. Xu Yan didnʼt move right away. He sat in the doorway, one leg bent, one hand on his knee. Cheng Banshan had told him at You hour not to put his back against the stone wall, and he hadnʼt. The cold from the wall ran along his left arm, stopping at the elbow, like someone had set a cold hand there.

He glanced inside. Jiang Wan sat asleep against the wall, her sword standing at her side, scabbard mouth facing out, right hand half-closed on her knee in the same grip sheʼd used all day holding that sword. Shi Poʼs bundle lay in his arms, one hand resting on it, light. Qian Duoduoʼs row of water flasks stood by the doorway—some under half, some over. Cheng Banshanʼs medicine pouch lay by his head, wrapped around those twelve stalks; one hand pressed down on it, solid.

The Chou-Yin watch—all these days theyʼd been assigned in this Hidden Realm, that watch had always been his. His watch had only three duties: listen, count, and wait for Mao hour. No fire on the night watch. Fire starters stayed tucked in their clothes; you didnʼt waste so much as a tube of ash.

Up on the mountain, the Chou-Yin shift guarded the Mountain Gate and the old stone door on the back mountain. Here in the cave, it guarded these dozen or so stone steps. The thing being guarded had changed twice. The hour never had.

First, he counted breaths.

Not names—just the number. Deep in the back: one deep, one light, one that stuttered sometimes before catching, one even, one rough, one so faint it nearly broke, and one more, lightest of all, in the corner. Near the door: one. Plus Qi Qi, just lain down. Nine total. Add his own—ten.

Ten names on the roster. Ten people in the stone chamber. The two numbers matched. Night ledger reconciliation in the Accounts Room worked the same way: check the total first, then the details. If the total balances, the details wonʼt be far off.

Breaths counted, he started on those three accounts.

The three talismans from Taiyi Temple: one pasted over the door crack, two on the frame left and right. Each one stuck, then fell away one by one, the paper backs clean. Jinding Pavilionʼs bronze chisel: slid along the seal pattern, slipped off twice, the third time it wedged into the seam and pried. The chiselʼs tail rattled—and the manʼs wrist gave out first. Zhenyue Sectʼs palm strike, blow after blow, more than a dozen. The palm force struck the door and scattered. When they finished, the strikerʼs hand was red between thumb and forefinger; he shook it out and said it wouldnʼt budge.

One sect, three clans, thirty people, not one injured, not a single mark left on the door. The only thing on the stone floor was a new layer of dust shaken loose by palm force.

This account he could read. None of those three were amateurs: Ke Wujiu could find formation anchors, Pang Ce drove a chisel true, Gan Renʼs palm force traveled along the stone wall without scattering. The door stayed shut not because they lacked skill.

Bai Xiaomanʼs words were still in his ear: ”This isnʼt a formation. No anchors. No carved lines.” Then, a moment later, sheʼd added: ”Itʼs like a seal.”

A seal has to be pressed by someone. Once pressed, the mark stays on the paper. The person leaves.

Ten years keeping books in the Accounts Room—he knew another way of pressing marks. A page torn in half: one half pressed onto this page, one half onto the next. When the halves are joined and the marks align, only then does the entry count. The Accounts Room called it a cross-seam seal. A thing sealed across a seam is by nature two halves—torn apart, neither recognizes the other. Only when the halves come together does it become a whole entry.

That seal pattern on the seam: half on the door, half on the frame.

And that line. Twenty-ninth of the fourth month, Yin hour, heʼd opened [Inventory] before the back mountain door. The ledger had shown three levels: three beneath his feet, the third sealed. That entry was written clear as day—Third Level, Sealed, Base Ledger Open.

Heʼd never spoken those words to anyone else. Who could he tell? Tell Jiang Wan, and sheʼd be down these dozen steps tonight. Tell Shi Po, and all heʼd say was ”Iʼll go.” Tell Bai Xiaoman, and sheʼd plant herself in front of that door and refuse to leave, measuring that crack inch by inch with her eyes. By dawn, everyone on the second level would know that Qingya had touched this door.

He wasnʼt trying to hide it from anyone. He just wasnʼt going to announce it. Rule Two governed theft, robbery, deception, bribery, trading innocents for gain. He hadnʼt taken anyoneʼs property. The thing behind the door was still behind the door. All he meant to do was go down and look—to see whether this door acknowledged this ledger.

If it wouldnʼt open, heʼd come back up, sit in this doorway, wake nine people at Mao hour, and theyʼd all file up the steps together. If anyone asked about the door, heʼd tell the truth: the door was the same as ever.

If it did open... he hadnʼt thought that far. Heʼd take it step by step.

His late-Foundation Establishment qi moved slowly through his meridians, drifting down from his shoulders past his elbows, pooling at a blockage in his lower back that had only half released. He didnʼt rush it. For years heʼd reconciled accounts this same way: when the lamp wick burned short, you didnʼt trim it—you waited for the page to turn.

This ledger had acknowledged him all these days, and heʼd asked it fewer than ten questions all told. He asked little, so it rarely bothered to answer. Tonight heʼd had one question he wanted to ask. Heʼd thought about it for a long time. In the end, he didnʼt ask.

He rose slowly. First he lifted his hand from his knee, then braced himself against the doorframe stones to stand. Before moving a foot, he found the edge of the step with his toe. There was a thin layer of dust on the ground; it felt slightly rough under his feet.

Once out of the doorway, he turned to listen. Those nine breaths in the chamber were where theyʼd been, not one changed.

The crack in the stone wall above held no daylight now—just a blacker line slanting down from high up, landing nowhere near him.

He made his way down along the wall, palm sliding over the stone. The fire starter sat in his clothes; he didnʼt touch it. No fire on night watch—his own rule. Light a flame and it would climb the steps, slip into the doorway, and among nine sleepers at least one would be restless. The wall was damp with moisture, cold enough to draw the heat from his palm. He counted steps: one, two, three... The middles of the steps were worn smooth; his foot landed and tilted slightly inward, and he didnʼt shift his weight until heʼd settled.

At the eleventh step, his right foot dropped into space—deeper than he remembered. His knee gave first, and he threw his other hand against the wall to brace himself. He caught his balance, his palm scraping a soft sound against the stone. He stopped, reset his foot on that step, made sure it was solid, then went on. These dozen-some steps: heʼd remembered three or four fewer than there were.

Farther down, he stepped on a clump of caked dust that crumbled. The sound echoed half a beat in the stone walls, then died. He stopped, back to the wall, and listened. After a dozen breaths, the doorway above remained black. No one looked out.

No one in the chamber stirred. Qian Duoduoʼs breathing paused mid-breath, then resumed.

Only then did he move again. His feet met level ground.

Heʼd reached the bottom.

He pulled his hand from the wall, wiped the damp off on his clothes, and walked forward three paces, then stopped. The shallow groove underfoot was slick; he stayed on it, not stepping off once.

Three paces beyond lay the door. In the darkness he could make out the seal pattern on the seam. The black of the stone wall lay in even, pressed layers; the black of that crack was different—it was the black of something pressing down, solid, heavy, sealed tight, the edges driven into the stone.

He didnʼt reach out. He hadnʼt crossed those three paces once, not from Wu hour to Shen hour. Not once.

He measured his line of retreat first: three paces, a dozen-some steps, the doorway above—his spot. This was the Accounts Roomʼs old habit: before leaving, look first at the road back.

Route measured, he slipped his hand inside his clothes, found the booklet, and drew it out.

Thin. Old cover, corners worn to fuzz. It felt like a piece of hide left drying too long. Others saw blank pages. He saw an old ledger. He held it in both hands, level, facing the door. The seal pattern lay three paces off; in the dark he couldnʼt see its color or its lines, only that it pressed on the seam, same as at Wu hour. He didnʼt compare it to anything in the ledger—he just held it out. His palms were sweating. The sweat pressed against the old cover, and the cover soaked it up, so that it felt dry to the touch.

The ledger produced no words.

He waited a while, waiting for the line that ought to appear. It didnʼt. He didnʼt ask, either. Heʼd long since learned this ledgerʼs temperament: when it meant to write, it wrote without being asked; when it didnʼt, asking wouldnʼt make it write.

He pushed the booklet forward a touch.

First the seal pattern thinned by a line—right at the mouth of the crack—as if someone had lifted away a drop of ink. Then it began to retreat on both sides. Slow. Half withdrew from the door, half from the frame. Where it passed, the stone showed its true color: dry, clean, not even dusted. He made no sound, and his breathing went shallow. His eyes followed that edge as it went, from door to frame, then back from frame to door. The two halves retreated at the same pace, neither waiting for the other.

A line of black showed through the crack—blacker than the doorʼs black. He stepped back half a pace, heel touching down first, the hands holding the booklet not lowering.

Then the door moved inward.

One panel moved first, the other following. First the crack widened a fingerʼs width, then a handʼs, then both panels glided back into the stone. A stone door opens soundlessly. The pivots made no sound, no dust fell. The thin layer of dust on the floor didnʼt stir. Only the shallow groove at the foot of the door, shined by countless footsteps, emerged from beneath the seam and ran all the way to his feet.

Inside the door was darkness. He stood three paces out and did not step across.

A draft rushed out and hit him in the face—cold and dry, dry as a cabinet full of old ledgers shut up for who knows how many years. When the cabinet door opens, that air is the first thing out.
