Spider-Trinity: Reborn Into Marvel Universe

In one room of a Queens house, a teenager could be seen lying in a bed sleeping in a way that would be classified as unnatural by anyone with a working understanding of how human spines are supposed to function.

This situation would not last long though.

There were two factors working against it.

Factor one was the morning light filtering through a window that had not been properly closed the night before, angling directly onto his face with the specific patience of something that has no concept of being unwelcome.

Factor two was considerably more dangerous, and that factor was May Parker’s alarm clock, which had a volume setting that could reasonably be described as a public health concern.

The alarm did not survive the encounter.

Peter’s hand came down on it before he was fully conscious, with the precise and total force of someone whose reflexes were now operating at a level that bore no relationship whatsoever to his previous baseline.

He registered what had just happened about two seconds after it happened, sat up, yawned with the particular satisfaction of someone who has slept genuinely well for the first time in recent memory, and stretched.

”Damn,” he said. ”I have never slept like that. I felt like an angel on a cloud.”

He got out of bed.

And then he stopped.

The room was the same room.

The morning was the same morning.

But everything he was looking at was different in a way that took him a moment to categorize, because it was not a change in the room itself but a change in the resolution at which he was seeing it.

Every edge was sharp. Every detail was present. The distance between where he was standing and the far wall of the room was rendered with a clarity he had never had in either life, this one or the previous one.

He was not wearing his contact lenses.

He had not worn them to bed, because sleeping in contact lenses was one of those things he had done exactly once before learning through direct experience why it was an extremely poor decision.

”Perfect,” he said quietly. ”One of the effects of the bite. I need to analyze this properly and find out what I am actually working with. It could be the abilities of one version or a combination of several.”

He went to the bathroom to change, and when he was done undressing and caught sight of himself in the mirror, he stopped again.

”Holy shit,” he said. ”Look at these muscles.”

The physique was recognizably the same one he had gone to sleep in, but the definition had increased overnight in a way that was not subtle.

More muscle mass, but not dramatically more, the balance was still clearly weighted toward the athletic rather than the imposing, the build of someone optimized for speed and agility and the kind of strength that expressed itself in precision rather than volume.

He leaned closer to the mirror.

Something small and dead was stuck near his shoulder. He peeled it off carefully and looked at it.

The spider.

”Best to keep this,” he said, reaching for an empty pill bottle from the cabinet and dropping the spider inside. ”I will analyze it later.”

A knock at the door.

”Darling?” May’s voice from the other side.

”Yes, beautiful May?” he called back.

A brief silence that had a blush in it.

”Are you alright?” she asked.

”I feel wonderful, May. Better than ever.”

”Did you wake up feeling better? Is there any change?”

”Change? Yes. A significant one.”

”Wonderful. Hurry up, you have the Baxter appointment soon. I was going to come wake you but it seems you beat me to it.”

”Thank you, May. I will see you in the kitchen after my shower.”

He turned the water on and stood under it and took his time, because he had enough time before Baxter to do what he actually planned to do first, which was use the storage room down the street to run some tests.

No cameras there. Private enough.

Not the long-term base he had in mind, he had something better planned for that, but functional for today.

He got out, dried off, and walked back to his room. He was halfway to the wardrobe when a thought stopped him.

He had not broken anything in the bathroom.

He stood there for a moment.

In the movie, the morning after the bite had been a sequence of small household disasters, taps ripped from walls, bathroom doors destroyed, the general result of waking up with dramatically increased strength and no time to adjust before touching things.

None of that had happened.

He muttered a hypothesis under his breath, filed it for later, and got dressed.

A few minutes after that he was in the kitchen, where May was already sitting with breakfast and two cups of coffee.

”You look different than yesterday,” she said.

”I feel better than ever,” he confirmed, setting his backpack near the door and sitting down.

”Are you going to school? I thought you were skipping it today for the appointment.”

”You are right, I just have a few things to do first. I am planning to go somewhere to train.... Nothing major.”

”Okay.” She looked at him over her coffee. ”And what happened at Oscorp yesterday? You never really told me.”

He told her the parts that were safe to tell her, adjusted the parts that were not, and finished breakfast.

He left his plate in the kitchen, kissed her on the cheek, grabbed his backpack, told her he loved her, and left.
