Re: Tales of the Rune-Tech Sage

Chapter 68: Viral Compiler

CH68 Viral Compiler

***

Three core components made up the experiment:

The Detector Rune, which Alex had crafted himself; the Spindlecarve Mite, analysed and mapped by the Bio-alchemist; and the Ancestral Marking—the only element Alex had no prior data on.

And it was exactly the component this experiment had been designed to understand.

’If my premise is correct... and the Ancestral Marking is a form of natural Rune—written in a language fundamentally different from our known rune scrpt, yet equally recognised by the natural laws—then I may have introduced a variable I couldn’t predict.’

He remembered his earlier deductions.

The Ancestral Marking filtered mana and bloodline essence, helping the Mite metabolise consumed bone matter. The Bio-alchemist had commented on the instability of the Mite’s genetic structure under magical exposure.

’But what if that instability isn’t a flaw... but a feature?’

--

A gleam of insight flickered in Alex’s ruby eyes.

’Yes... it’s beginning to make sense.’

’If the Mite’s genetic material is adaptive—able to shift based on the bloodline it consumes—then the Ancestral Marking might not just mitigate the effects of bloodline absorption. It might also guide the direction of that adaptability.’

’In other words... the Ancestral Marking contains a concept of Adaptability.’

And that changed everything.

’If it’s built to respond to new bloodlines and genetic inputs, then it likely contains flexible logic—organic logic. Logic that can override the rigid, static programming of my Detector Rune.’

He exhaled slowly, letting the revelation settle.

’By connecting the Ancestral Marking to my Rune... I may have unintentionally created a genetic-level virus—one that hijacked the Mite’s adaptability functions and fused with my code.’

To test his hypothesis, Alex reached for a compact alchemic device—an Arcane Lens Array—functionally similar to a microscope.

It allowed observation at the cellular and even sub-cellular level, providing deep insight into biological structures.

He activated the device, directing it toward the Spindlecarve Mite’s altered form.

”There it is...” Alex exhaled, his voice low.

He had been right.

Through the lens, he witnessed a dark mass—shifting, amorphous—attacking and engulfing the mite’s cells. The mass twisted the cellular structure, rewriting it with an aggressive efficiency. Like a virus, but with far more precision, it induced rapid spontaneous mutation.

Alex channelled additional mana into the device, enhancing its depth of view. He focused in on the nucleus of an altered cell, attempting to observe the mutation of the genome itself.

What he saw shocked him.

--

’This... this isn’t the Ancestral Marking anymore. And it’s definitely not the Detector Rune I coded.’

’This is something else entirely... It’s like... Yes—a viral compiler!’

Alex’s eyes narrowed.

The Mite’s genetic material was being consumed and rewritten in real time. But neither his Detector Rune nor the original Ancestral Marking were driving the process.

It was the accidental fusion, the by-product of connecting the two systems—this viral compiler. It had formed a new biological program that transcoded the mite’s genome into something different.

--

The creature in question had ceased convulsing. It now lay still—entirely dormant.

If not for the faint signs of cellular activity he observed through the Arcane Lens, Alex might’ve assumed it was dead.

He considered terminating the specimen—ending its suffering before it could become a threat.

But then he hesitated.

The OmniRune Core was still receiving usable data from the Detector Rune—even in its altered state.

Valuable data.

Data that could potentially illuminate the hidden relationship between Ancestral Markings and the biological systems of their hosts.

Against his better judgement, Alex made a calculated decision.

He would keep the creature alive—for now.

--

But safety came first.

He instructed the OmniRune Core to activate the portal to his Pocket Dimension. Then, using precise magical manipulation, he slid the entire rune-lab table—creature and all—into the sealed space.

Now, the mutated Mite and its viral compiler were quarantined, safely contained within a spatial fold inaccessible to the outside world.

Next, Alex donned a magically-reinforced alchemical suit—a biohazard-rated arcane containment rig, gifted to him by the Master Bio-alchemist he had consulted earlier.

Once fully sealed and verified, he entered the Pocket Dimension to continue his observations.

--

The viral compiler remained aggressive.

It moved with singular purpose, rewriting the mite’s genetic code in cell after cell. Entire biological pathways were being overwritten.

However, over time, its momentum began to slow.

Alex quickly deduced why.

His original Rune contained a built-in failsafe—one that cut all power and dumped internal energy if an anomaly was detected. The Rune had become inert, severed from ambient mana, and unable to recharge.

That meant the only remaining energy source had been the Ancestral Marking side of the viral compiler.

Fortunately, the failsafe logic had transferred to the new entity. Unable to draw external power, the viral compiler finally ran dry.

The mutation stopped.

--

Alex allowed himself a moment of cautious relief.

But then... something changed.

The cells already altered by the viral compiler began replicating rapidly—wildly even—consuming unaltered cells to fuel their reproduction.

Externally, the Spindlecarve Mite began to secrete a thick, glutinous liquid from its carapace. The slime spread quickly, enveloping its entire body in a cocoon-like structure.

It was behaving like a caterpillar preparing for metamorphosis.

--

Alex’s instincts screamed for vigilance.

Even though the original virus had expired, the OmniRune Core continued to receive data—readings from within the Mite’s body.

And not from a single source.

From multiple sources...

Alex had no time to fully process the implications of what he was witnessing.

His Spirit Sight was pushed to its limits, tracking the rapid internal changes within the cocooned Mite.

Within the translucent shell, he saw energy converging—condensing into a singular point. It aligned exactly with the location of the mutated cells.

Then, steadily and with decreasing density, that energy began to radiate outward, diffusing through the Mite’s internal structure.

Alex quickly pieced together what was happening.

The mutated cells had hijacked the creature’s internal energy system. They were using that energy—and, if the final image from the Arcane Lens was accurate—even consuming the Mite’s original cells to fuel their replication and complete their hostile takeover.

He hovered on the edge of pulling the plug—ending the experiment and terminating the mutated Mite before it spiralled further out of control.

But he held back.

The OmniRune Core was still reporting a steady increase in data packets.

A rate of increase that matched the exponential growth of mutated cells he could see through Spirit Sight...
