The Anomaly's Path

The small room fell silent, except for the faint hum of the mana-suppression cuffs.

A heavy wave of killing intent rolled off Leo, filling every corner of the small room. It was the crushing weight of an Expert High aura, sharpened by instinct and power. To a broken teenager with a low rank and his mana sealed behind iron cuffs, it felt like the roof was caving in on his chest.

He couldn’t breathe. His skin went cold. His blood felt like ice.

Leo stared down at him with cold blue eyes — lifeless, sharp, and completely empty of warmth. The message was clear: if he wanted the boy dead, he would be dead.

In the corner, the sixteen-year-old pressed his back against the wall as hard as he could. His heart pounded against his ribs like a trapped bird. He clenched his bound fists so hard his nails dug into his bloody palms. His teeth ground together until his jaw hurt.

Every part of him screamed to stay silent, to keep up the cold, ruthless front he had built over years of surviving in dark alleys and Syndicate cells. He wanted to glare back. He wanted to laugh in this noble’s face and tell him to go to hell.

But his body wouldn’t listen. His knees were shaking under the weight of the aura. His breathing was ragged, gasping for air.

”What... you want me to bow?” the boy spat out, his voice dry and harsh, trying to force a sneer onto his bloody face.

”You want me to kneel and thank you for spending your pocket money at the auction? You think buying my chains makes you different from the Syndicate people who bought me when I was seven?”

Leo didn’t answer. He didn’t move an inch. He just kept his cold blue eyes locked on the boy, letting the killing intent press down even harder, slowly suffocating every last bit of defiance out of the room.

”If you think your pitiful little act scared me, you’re mistaken,” Leo said, his voice dropping into a cold whisper.

”I don’t need your gratitude, and I certainly don’t need your attitude. I bought you because you’re useful. If you prove to be nothing more than a rabid dog that only knows how to bark and bite, I’ll erase you right where you sit and write you off as a bad investment.”

The words hit the boy like a physical blow. He clamped his jaw shut so hard his teeth creaked. His breath came in short, shaky gasps.

He glared up at Leo through his messy dark hair, his eyes burning with hatred. He tried to think, to find a weakness, a trick, a way out — the same way he had done with every guard, handler, and squad mate who had ever pushed him into a corner.

But there was nothing to manipulate.

No blind spot to exploit. Leo wasn’t letting down his guard for a second, and the gap in their strength was a mountain he couldn’t climb.

The sheer, helpless weight of it slowly broke through the kid’s anger. The fake sneer slid off his pale face. The realization hit him like a physical blow — this wasn’t just another cruel boss or an angry guard who would beat him and leave.

The person in front of him could erase him from existence before he could even blink, and no one in the world would care or remember his name.

All the suppressed bitterness, the years of hunger, the memories of being tossed around like garbage, and the sheer exhaustion of always running, always fighting, and always being betrayed came crashing down on him all at once.

”Why?!” the boy suddenly roared, his raspy voice cracking violently against the walls as he tried to push against the crushing aura. ”Why always me?! What the fuck did I ever do to all of you?!”

He thrashed against his chains, the iron links clanking violently against the floor. Tears finally burst from his eyes — not out of sadness, but out of pure, helpless rage and humiliation.

”My parents threw me out like trash! The Syndicate beat me until I couldn’t walk! My own squad tried to slaughter me while I slept! And now you — some rich bastard playing hero, you stand there looking at me like I’m nothing?!”

He wiped his eyes with his chained wrists, his chest heaving. ”If you’re going to kill me, then just fucking do it! Stop talking! Stop looking at me like that! You’re all the same! Every single one of you is the same!”

His voice broke on the last word. The anger burned out, leaving only exhaustion. He pulled his knees to his chest and buried his face in his arms, his thin body shaking with heavy sobs.

He was done...

The tough, dangerous act was gone. All that remained was a broken, scared sixteen-year-old kid who had finally reached his limit.

Leo stood motionless in the middle of the room. Looking down at the weeping boy, the crushing aura around Leo vanished in an instant, the air instantly returning to normal.

Damn it, Leo thought, taking a quiet breath as his own trial memories flashed behind his eyes.

In the game lore, this boy grew up to become a ruthless, cold-blooded underworld boss who ruled through fear. But sitting right here, in rags and chains, he wasn’t a villain yet. He was just a scared, exhausted kid who had run out of energy to fight back.

Leo took a slow, calm breath, letting out a short sigh. ”...Keep shouting if it makes you feel better. At least you still have enough breath to yell.”

The boy didn’t lift his head, but his crying slowed down a little, his ears listening for the change in Leo’s voice.

”I’m not going to sit here and tell you life is fair,” Leo continued smoothly, his voice grounded and steady. ”It isn’t. The strong do whatever they want, and the weak suffer until they get strong enough to stop it. That’s how this world works, and you already know that better than anyone.”

Leo walked forward slowly and crouched down in front of the boy, bringing himself to eye level. He reached out a hand toward the boy’s head.

The moment Leo’s hand moved, the boy flinched hard, jerking his head back, his eyes wide with fear. His body shook uncontrollably, expecting the blow he had taken a thousand times before. His body remembered the pain, even if his pride tried to forget.

Leo paused his hand for a second, then gently rested his palm on top of the boy’s messy dark hair. He didn’t hit him. He didn’t grab him. He just let his hand rest there, light and warm. The boy froze, his eyes wide with utter confusion.

”I could force you to serve me,” Leo said softly. ”I could put a slave brand on your chest right now and make you obey my every command. But if I did that, what would be the difference between me and the people who put you in this cage?”

Leo grabbed the cuffs on the boy’s wrists. Black flames burst from his fingers and flowed into the metal.

Crack!

With a sharp, shattering sound, the cuffs split open and broke into useless fragments, clattering onto the floor. The strain on the boy’s mana core vanished instantly, allowing his faint, natural mana to flow back through his veins.

The boy stared at his freed, bruised wrists in total shock. ”You... you broke them?”

”I don’t work with people who don’t trust me,” Leo said, standing up and pulling a mana oath contract from his Void Pocket. ”Loyalty matters to me. Trust matters. Even if it’s just a little bit.”

Leo looked down at the contract in his hand, a small, genuine smile touching his lips for a fraction of a second.

”I have a girl who stays by my side,” Leo said, his voice softening slightly as he thought of Lyra.

”Years ago, my family bought her from a slave auction just like this one. But I told her she was free to leave whenever she wanted. She chose to stay. Through every mess, every bad day, and every failure, she never left my side. She taught me that real loyalty isn’t bought with money or forced with chains. It’s earned.”

Leo unrolled the contract and placed it gently on the floor beside the boy.

”This is a Mana Oath Contract,” Leo explained flatly. ”It states that you will work under me. In return, I will provide you with safety, resources, funding, and everything you need.”

Leo turned around and walked toward the door of the room.

”The choice is yours,” Leo said without looking back. ”You can sign that contract and walk out of here as part of my team. Or you can ignore it, walk out that door as a free person, and take your chances in the city. I won’t hunt you down.”

Leo pulled open the door and stepped out into the corridor, letting the door swing shut behind him. The moment he stepped out, a familiar voice spoke in his head.

[Damn, Host. You’re actually pretty cruel when you want to be, you know that?]

Cruel? Leo wiped a hand over his face, letting out a long, tired breath. I just gave him a choice.

[You backed a traumatized kid into a corner, unleashed enough killing intent to make him think his head was coming off, broke his ego until he burst into tears, and then dropped a contract and a speech on him.]

”People only show who they really are when they’re pushed to the edge of death,” Leo murmured quietly. ”He wanted to live. All that anger and frustration he was holding inside needed to come out. If he kept hiding behind that fake cold act, he would have tried to slit my throat the first chance he got.”

Leo looked down at his own hands, his eyes narrowing slightly. ”Now he knows I can crush him easily, but I chose to break his cuffs instead. If he signs that contract, it will be because he chose to survive on my terms.”

[And if he doesn’t sign it and decides to run?]

”Then he dies when the Syndicate finds him,” Leo said flatly. ”I offered him a ladder. It’s up to him if he wants to climb it.”

Minutes ticked by in the silent hallway. Leo stood calmly. He didn’t rush him. He simply waited.

[Host... do you think he’s actually going to—]

Buzz.

Before Nova could finish his sentence, a faint, warm prickle of mana washed over Leo’s chest. A subtle, binding connection etched itself directly into his soul — the distinct, unmistakable signal that a Mana Oath Contract had just been officially signed and activated.

A small smirk touched the corner of Leo’s lips. He signed it.

Leo had gambled. He knew the boy was stubborn, just like him. The kid had nowhere else to go. If he ran, he would die. Staying with Leo was his only real chance.

The iron hinges groaned as the door slowly swung open.
