The Anomaly's Path

The dust from the ruined platform was still floating in the air, catching the dim light of the room like tiny glass shards. No one moved. No one even seemed to breathe.

From the rows, the students looked down at the wreckage in shock. For the past half hour, they had sat through Professor Vance’s lesson, treating his words about Mana and Aether like distant history, just book talk meant for old scrolls.

Then Instructor Morgana had invited three volunteers to step forward, Leo von Celestial, Arthur Vale, and Riven Ashford, and those three freshmen had actually done the impossible. They broke the rules of reality.

Up in the Class Audax section, Princess Cordelia bit her lip, her strawberry-blonde hair falling forward as she stared down at the shattered stage. Her emerald eyes tracked the three figures, Arthur, Riven, and Leo, still standing in the dust.

She had watched it all.

And she knew, now more than ever, how far she still had to go.

Beside her, Julia shrank back in her seat, her small body trembling. Her eyes were locked on Leo, still standing in the dust below, his white hair catching the dim light. She wanted to look away, but she couldn’t.

A cold knot tightened in her chest. She was his employee, bound by the contract she signed. He had sponsored her, paid for her tuition, given her a chance when no one else would.

And what had she done?

Sat here, in the safety of the upper rows, while he walked onto a broken stage and faced a Transcendent alone. Her Spatial Pressure told her exactly how far away she was, too far to help, too weak to matter. She had never felt the gap between them so clearly.

It wasn’t just about rank. It was about everything.

Further down the rows, Elisabeth sat perfectly still, her silver-white hair catching the dull light. Her deep violet eyes were fixed on Morgana, on the way the Transcendent stood in the wreckage with her hands still in her pockets, completely unbothered.

Elisabeth knew about Aether.

In the bloody memories of her past life, she had seen Sovereigns and Transcendents reshape entire battlefields with a single spoken word.

She knew the weight of a command. She knew the frustration of trying to fight it when her own core was too weak to even touch the threads. Back then, she had been stronger, much stronger, and still, it hadn’t been enough.

Now, in this younger body, her mana was a fraction of what it would one day become. She could feel it simmering quietly in her core, patient but limited. Watching Morgana, Elisabeth was not impressed by the freshmen.

She was measuring the distance between herself and the woman on the stage.

That, she thought, her fingers pressing into her knees... is what I need to reach soon. Not just power. Authority. The kind that makes reality listen.

In the back rows, Marius did not join the quiet whispers. He sat with his arms crossed, his eyes following Leo as the white-haired boy stepped back. He already knew the gap between them was wide.

But watching the wreckage on the stage now, he understood that the road ahead was not just long, it was a mountain that touched the sky. Yet, there was no envy in his chest. Just a quiet knowing of how far he still had to go.

On the floor below, the three boys just stood in the wreckage. Arthur dropped to one knee, his chest heaving. A few feet away, Riven hunched over, breathing in short, rough gasps, staring at his shaking hands.

Only Leo stayed on his feet, his back straight but tight as he slowly lowered his arm, his fingers still holding his katana.

Morgana stood in her spot, her hands still near her pockets, looking down at the hole where her left foot had been.

Slowly, she raised her head.

The pressure vanished at once, bringing the room back to normal. For a few long seconds, she just stared at the three of them, silent. Her face was not angry, not surprised. Just calm. She was rethinking her view of the students in front of her.

Then, a loud laugh echoed through the room, breaking the silence.

”Well, I’ll be damned,” Morgana grinned, her eyes shining with pride and danger. She stepped out of the wreckage, her boots crunching on the broken stone. ”You did not fight the mountain. You just took away its ground. All three of you pass.”

Professor Vance’s hand was shaking a little as he tapped his desk to clear the warning screens that were flashing red with damage alerts. ”The main platform will need fixing... but you did what was asked. You may take your seats.”

[Leo’s POV]

Oh, thank god. My legs feel like jelly.

I carefully put Tempest back in its cover, making sure my moves were slow, calm, and looked easy. On the outside, I probably looked like a cold, smart genius who had planned everything down to the smallest detail.

On the inside?

I was scared to death, hoping no one could see the small shake in my fingers as I put my hand back in my pocket.

The moment my blade had entered her space, the pressure felt like a heavy weight dropping on my skull. If my bloodline had not been working hard to take in the loose waves of her power, and if my earring had not kept my panic down, I would have dropped my sword and thrown up on her boots.

Note to self: Never, under any circumstances, talk shit about a Transcendent again. Vance can marry a crazy bitch for all I care.

To my left, Arthur was trying to look dignified as he forced himself back up, but his shoulders were still heaving as he put away his sword. His face was pale.

Riven walked past me without a word. His face was a mask of cold anger. His steel-red eyes did not look at me, but the quiet anger coming off him told me he was already thinking of ways to get back at Morgana.

Damn. He’s going to train until his bones break just to spite her. And knowing Riven, he’s going to drag everyone else into his revenge training. Here we go again. Another psycho who won’t stop until he’s the best.

I need a damn break!

Instead of walking back to our old seats, the three of us moved to the very front row where three seats had been left safe from the blast.

We sat down. The smug, proud look that usually filled the front rows was gone.

Professor Vance tapped his desk, and a simple three-dimensional body picture appeared in the center of the room. It showed a human body, but instead of the usual blue mana lines, there were thin, glowing gold threads floating just outside the skin, drifting like thin webs.

”Now that you have felt a tiny bit of that pressure, let us look at the truth of what you just saw,” Vance said, his voice getting back its clear, teaching tone. ”What you saw was not a high-level mana spell. It was the use of... Aether.”

He pointed his pen at the glowing threads.

”Normal mana needs the user to pull power from their core, turn it into an element, and push it out into the world. It is an active tool. Like water you carry in a bucket to throw at an enemy. Aether is not inside you. Aether... is the base fabric that holds those elements together. It is the language of reality itself...”

Vance looked around the room, making sure everyone was watching.

”When you use mana, you are trying to push your power into the space. But... when a Transcendent uses Aether, they are changing the space’s rules. Instructor Morgana did not fight Arthur’s light with a stronger element. Her intent simply changed the local rules within a few feet. For a split second, the meaning of ’Light Mana’ was changed to zero. Arthur did not lose a fight of strength — his spell just lost its right to exist.”

A hand went up in the middle rows. A student from Class Ascendant, a young noble with sharp features and an even sharper curiosity, did not wait to be called.

”Professor, if Aether can just delete the rules of mana, is there even a way to counter it? Isn’t that completely overpowered? Shouldn’t that mean a normal fighter can never beat a Transcendent or a Sovereign?”

Vance adjusted his collar, his eyes flicking to Morgana for a split second. When he looked back at the student, his voice was calm but precise.

”...Good question. The direct answer is yes, you cannot counter Aether with mana alone. If a Transcendent decides that fire does not burn in their space, your fire spell becomes a light show. There is no amount of raw power that can override a rule that has removed your permission to exist.”

Murmurs spread through the rows. The student frowned. ”Then what is the point? If we can never reach that level, why even try?”

Vance held up a hand.

”I did not say you can never reach it. I said you cannot counter it with mana. There are two ways to fight Aether. The first is with your own Aether. That requires reaching the Transcendent rank, a feat that very few achieve, but it is not impossible. The second way is... Will.”

He tapped his temple.

”Will is not mana. It is not a spell. Will is the strength of your mind, the clarity of your purpose, the refusal to break even when reality itself tells you to kneel. A Grandmaster with a powerful Will cannot rewrite a Transcendent’s rule, but they can resist it. They can keep moving. They can look for the loophole. They can survive long enough to find the crack in the absolute.”

Another student, this time from the front rows, spoke up. ”So... Will is the foundation for Aether?”

”Exactly,” Vance nodded.

”You cannot wield Aether without a Will that can bend the world. But you can have Will without Aether. Every Grandmaster who ever broke through to Transcendent did so because their Will was already strong enough to take the first step. That is why the Grandmaster rank is critical. It is not just about power, it is about forging your soul.”

Morgana pushed off from the desk, crossing her arms. Her voice cut through the quiet.

”...What the book nerd is trying to say is this, Aether is not something you learn. It is something you become. Your body has to survive holding it. Most people who try to force Aether before they are ready? Their cores crack. Their veins burn. They die on the floor with smoke coming out of their mouths.”

She looked around the room, her eyes hard.

”There is a reason you do not touch Aether until Transcendent. Your body literally cannot handle the weight. It is like trying to pour the ocean into a cup. The cup breaks. Every time. But— ”

she pointed a finger at the class, ”—that does not mean you sit around waiting. You build your Will. You train your mind. You learn to know exactly who you are and what you want. Because when the time comes, if your Will wavers for even a second, the Aether will eat you alive.”

Vance added quietly, ”...And for those who reach the peak — the Sovereigns — they do not just use Aether. They create a Soul Dominion. A pocket of reality where their rules are absolute. Inside that space, their will becomes fact. Time can slow. Space can bend. Gravity can reverse. It is not a spell. It is their soul made manifest.”

He continued, ”That said, a Soul Dominion — or Arcane Realm, as magicians call it — is not something that only appears at Sovereign rank. A Grandmaster with a sufficiently strong will can begin to shape the foundation of their own domain. It will be small, fragile, barely stable. But it can exist.”

A pause.

”And... as your rank grows, as your soul hardens and your will sharpens, that domain grows with you. By the time you reach Transcendent, it is no longer a fragile bubble — it is a weapon. That is why training your will is just as important as raising your rank. A strong will at Grandmaster is the seed of a Sovereign’s reality.”

Morgana snorted. ”But do not get ahead of yourselves. You are freshmen. Half of you still trip over your own mana channels. Focus on not dying in the next exam before you worry about rewriting reality.”

She waved her hand, and the heavy red fog left the room, bringing the air back to normal.

”Class is over,” she said, turning her back to us. ”Go wash the dust off your faces. If you want to survive what is coming, you better start figuring out who you are. The world out there does not care about your academy’s ranks.”

Without waiting for a reply, she turned and walked out the side doors, her heavy boots hitting the stone until the door clicked shut behind her.

Author’s Note

Hey, I know the past few Chapters have felt like a lot of information. Aether, Will, Intent, Soul Dominion — its a lot to take in. Honestly, I didn’t want to dump everything at once either. But this was the best moment to explain some things clearly.

Why?

Because in the future, when a Transcendent or Sovereign fight happens, I don’t want to break the rhythm of the battle by stopping to explain how their power works. You’ll just see them use it, and you’ll already understand what’s happening. No mid‑fight info dumps. No confusing moments.

So I hope you understand. Everything will be revealed slowly, piece by piece. This was just the foundation.

If anything doesn’t make sense, feel free to ask me. I’m always around.

Thanks for sticking with the story
