I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 616 - 497/500

Jack’s gaze tracked across the survivors without particular interest, noting their positions and states but not lingering on individual faces.

They were background elements in this scene, witnesses whose terror served purposes beyond simple cruelty.

Nine thousand demons who would spread word throughout Floor Twenty about what happened when someone offended the Soul Warden.

Jack’s right hand emerged from his pocket, fingers moving through the air in a pattern that made reality shimmer around him.

The gesture activated Soul Magic at levels that transcended normal necromancy. This wasn’t simple reanimation or spirit binding, but fundamental manipulation of the boundary between existence and oblivion.

The Chain of Soul Warden materialized, metal links appearing from nothing as the artifact responded to its master’s will. The chain extended outward from Jack’s hand, growing longer with each passing second as it reached toward the corpses scattered across the clearing.

One chain became two. Two became four. Four became eight. The multiplication continued until one hundred thirty separate strands extended across the killing field, each one terminating above a specific corpse chosen through criteria invisible to observers.

The chains hung in the air like frozen lightning, perfectly still despite having no visible anchor point.

Their metal surfaces caught the dim light as they flanked in the air.

Then, one hundred thirty chains punched through one hundred thirty corpses simultaneously, metal links passing through desiccated flesh and charred bone to reach something deeper.

Translucent forms began emerging from the corpses.

The spirits screamed silently, mouths open in expressions of terror and confusion as they were torn from peace or torment or whatever state they’d occupied during the brief period between death and resurrection.

The extracted souls were visible to everyone present. Translucent copies of the demons they’d been in life, complete with bark-like skin and the cracks that leaked dark fluid.

But these spiritual forms showed no physical damage, burns, or desiccation. Only the pristine copies of what these demons had looked like before Mira killed them.

One hundred thirty souls swirled through the air in streams of light and shadow, pulled inexorably toward Jack despite their desperate struggles.

Some tried to anchor themselves to their corpses, translucent hands grasping at dead flesh in futile attempts to remain where they’d fallen.

Others fought against the chains directly, spiritual energy flaring as they tried to break bonds that existed beyond physical strength’s ability to affect.

None of it mattered.

The chains were absolute.

Products of a Soul Warden’s authority that recognized no resistance from entities whose entire existence fell within Jack’s domain.

The souls spiraled inward, forming a tornado of anguished faces around Jack’s position as the binding process reached its completion phase.

A notification materialized in Jack’s vision, text appearing with clinical precision.

[Soul Binding Initiated]

[Targets: Blight Demons ×130]

[Rank: Nightmare]

[Average Level: 34]

[Status: Deceased - Bodies Available for Resurrection]

[Binding Cost: 100,000 Death Tokens each]

[Total Cost: 13,000,000 Death Tokens]

[Proceed with binding?]

[YES] or [NO]

Jack selected yes without hesitation.

[Purchase Confirmed: 13,000,000 Death Tokens spent]

[Current Death Tokens: 397,878,900]

The chains pulsed with light as the transaction completed, energy flowing through metal links to brand each captured soul with ownership that couldn’t be broken or transferred.

The demons screamed again. This time, with voices that produced sound, echoing across the clearing in a chorus of despair that made the survivors flinch and press harder against the dead trees.

Then the souls stopped struggling.

Their expressions shifted from terror to blank acceptance as the binding settled into place, rewriting their fundamental nature to include absolute loyalty to Jack Kaiser.

Some memories remained intact, personalities preserved, but the core of their existence had been altered at levels too deep for conscious recognition.

They belonged to Jack now, not through coercion or magical compulsion that could potentially be broken, but through ontological restructuring that made serving him as natural and correct as breathing had been when they lived.

[130 Blight Demons Successfully Bound]

[Soul Bound Army: 497/500]

[Resurrection Available - Bodies Present]

[Initiate Resurrection?]

[YES] or [NO]

Jack selected yes again, and the clearing’s atmosphere changed immediately.

The one hundred thirty corpses that had served as anchor points for the soul extraction began glowing with silver light that bled from their eyes, mouths, and the cracks in their bark-like skin.

The illumination intensified rapidly, transforming dead flesh into beacons that banished Floor Twenty’s perpetual gloom in expanding circles of radiance.

Then the healing began.

Desiccated tissue rehydrated, cells regenerating at speeds that defied biology.

The process was neither quick nor gentle.

Bodies convulsed on the stone as hearts restarted, lungs inflated, brains rebooted with electrical storms that made limbs thrash uncontrollably.

The demons weren’t consciously experiencing any of this.

Their souls remained separate from their bodies during the resurrection, spared the agony of feeling their physical forms rebuilt from catastrophic damage.

But the survivors watching could imagine what it would feel like, and their terror intensified as they realized the Soul Warden possessed power that made death itself temporary.

The silver light faded as the last resurrection completed, leaving one hundred thirty living demons where corpses had been moments before.

They rose to their feet with coordinated precision.

Their eyes opened, revealing awareness and intelligence rather than the blank mindlessness of typical undead.

These weren’t zombies or skeleton servants. They were fully functional demons who happened to be bound to Jack’s will at levels that made their loyalty more certain than gravity.

The notification has been updated:

[Resurrection Complete]

[130 Blight Demons Restored]

[Status: Bound - Immortal (bound to master’s lifeforce)]

[Memory Retention: 78% average]

[Condition: Strong souls retained personality and memories. Weak souls reduced to basic function.]

[Note: Bound demons cannot die unless the master dies. Fatal damage will trigger automatic resurrection.]

Jack’s eyes tracked across the one hundred thirty resurrected demons as they arranged themselves in formation before him.

Roughly eighty of them showed clear awareness in their expressions, eyes tracking their surroundings with intelligence that indicated intact personalities beneath the binding.

These were the stronger souls, demons who’d possessed enough power and will in life that resurrection had preserved what made them individuals rather than just functional bodies.

The remaining fifty showed less complexity.

Their eyes were focused but empty, consciousness present but simplified to basic function.

They would follow orders with perfect obedience, execute tasks with mechanical precision, but wouldn’t demonstrate initiative or personality beyond what was strictly necessary.

Perfect soldiers. Incapable of hesitation, immune to fear, bound to Jack’s life in ways that made them functionally immortal so long as he survived.

The Clan Leader’s knees buckled, her bark-like legs giving out as she collapsed to the swamp water with a splash that sent ripples across the fetid surface.

Her hands came up to cover her face, dark fluid pouring from her cracks as stress exceeded her body’s ability to regulate the corruption leaking from her skin.

”Mercy,” she gasped, her voice breaking with emotion. ”You’ve shown mercy. The dead returned. The punishment was delivered and then reversed. We understand, Soul Warden. We understand.”

Her head bowed until her forehead touched the water, her body bent in absolute submission.

”The Blight Clan serves. We will not forget this lesson or the generosity shown through resurrection.”
