I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 425 425: Rebirth through the Soul Warden

Jack stood at the edge of the clearing where Stormfang had fed, the charred remains of the fifteen panthers scattered across the scorched earth. The smell of burned flesh was heavy in the air, and the ground was still warm from the blue electricity that had consumed the pack.

Most people would see nothing here worth salvaging.

But Jack saw an opportunity.

His red eyes studied the clearing with enhanced perception, and his Flawed Sight was activated, piercing beyond the physical realm into something more profound. The charred bodies were worthless, burned beyond recognition, flesh reduced to ash, bones cracked and blackened.

But souls didnʼt burn.

Fifteen distinct presences flickered in his vision, translucent forms that overlaid the physical remains like ghostly afterimages.

They were fading, slowly dissipating as the natural order tried to claim them, but they were still intact.

{Oh,} Oscar whispered in Jackʼs mind. {Oh, thatʼs interesting. Can you see their souls even after theyʼve been killed?}

ʼAs long as the soul exists, the binding is possible.ʼ

{But theyʼre dead. Their bodies are destroyed. Whatʼs the point of binding souls without bodies?}

ʼWatch.ʼ

Jack raised one hand, and the Chain of Soul Warden materialized. Black metal links, each inscribed with runes that pulsed with red energy.

The chain extended from his palm, growing longer and longer until it split into fifteen separate strands, each one reaching toward a different soul.

Kaedor watched from a safe distance, his rings clicking together nervously. ”Master, what are you doing? Those creatures are dead. Thereʼs nothing left to bind.”

”Thereʼs always something left,” Jack replied, his voice carrying absolute certainty. ”As long as the soul remains, the binding is possible.”

The chains made contact with the first soul, and the system immediately responded:

[Soul Detected: Shadowfang Panther]

[Rank: Dread]

[Level: 20]

[Status: Deceased - Body Destroyed]

[Binding Cost: 50,000 Death Tokens]

[Warning: No physical body present. Regeneration will be required.]

[Proceed with binding?]

[YES] or [NO]

Jack selected yes without hesitation, and the notification repeated fourteen more times as the chains wrapped around each soul in turn.

[Total Binding Cost: 750,000 Death Tokens]

”Seven hundred and fifty thousand tokens,” Jack said aloud, watching Kaedorʼs expression shift from confusion to shock. ”To bind fifteen Dread-rank creatures that most people would consider irretrievably lost.”

”Master, thatʼs... thatʼs a fortune for creatures that donʼt even have bodies anymore,” Kaedor protested, his hands gesturing frantically. ”Even if you could somehow restore them, theyʼre weak. Barely worth the effort when you could spend those tokens on...”

”On what?” Jack interrupted, his red eyes fixing on the demon. ”On equipment I donʼt need? On upgrading creatures I already have? These panthers are an investment, Kaedor. Not in their current state, but in what they can become.”

He confirmed the binding, and his token count dropped significantly.

[Purchase confirmed: 750,000 Death Tokens spent]

[15 Shadowfang Panthers bound]

[Current Death Tokens: 36,671,750]

[Souls Bound: 19/500]

The chains pulsed with energy as the binding completed, each soul pulled from the brink of dissolution and anchored to Jackʼs will.

The translucent forms solidified slightly, gaining definition and color as they became permanent fixtures in his growing army.

But they were still just souls. Ghosts of what theyʼd been, without physical form or substance.

Kaedor stared at the empty clearing, seeing nothing but charred remains. ”Master, I donʼt understand. What did you do? Where are they?”

”Watch,” Jack repeated, his tone carrying anticipation.

The bound souls began to change.

It started at what had been their centers.

Where hearts would beat if they had bodies, a single point of light appeared in each translucent form, barely visible at first, like distant stars just beginning to shine.

Then the light grew brighter.

Red lightning crackled along the chains connecting Jack to the souls, and power flowed from him into them.

Not his personal energy, but something the system was facilitating. A reconstruction process that defied natural law.

The first pantherʼs soul began to manifest physically.

Bone formed first, materializing from nothing in defiance of every natural principle.

The spine appeared as a string of vertebrae that snapped together with audible clicks, then ribs grew outward like branches from a tree, curving to form a cage that would protect vital organs that didnʼt exist yet.

The skull came next, forming from the top down. The cranium, eye sockets, jaw, and all the delicate structures that made up a predatorʼs head. Teeth grew from the jawbone, each one sharp and perfectly formed.

Legs followed, long bones appearing first.

Femurs, tibias, fibulas, and then the smaller bones of the feet, each claw-tipped digit forming with surgical precision.

Kaedor took an involuntary step backward, his rings clicking frantically. ”What... what is this? What am I watching?”

”This is the power of the Soul Warden,” Loryn said quietly, his purple eyes tracking the reconstruction with analytical fascination. ”Not just binding souls, but reconstructing the physical form from the soul itself. Iʼve heard legends of such abilities, but I never thought Iʼd witness it.”

The skeleton was complete now, a perfect framework of bone that gleamed white in the dim jungle light. Then the muscle began to grow.

It was visceral in a way that made even Loryn look slightly uncomfortable.

Strands of tissue appeared along the bones, thin at first, as spider silk stretched between the framework. Then they thickened, bundles of muscle fiber weaving themselves together.

Each strand found its proper place, connecting to bone with tendons that formed from nothing.

The muscles grew denser, layering over each other in complex patterns that would provide strength, speed, and flexibility.

Shoulder muscles that would power devastating strikes. Leg muscles built for explosive speed. Core muscles that would let the creature twist and turn with lethal agility.

Blood vessels formed next, a network of arteries and veins that spread through the growing body like roots through soil. They connected to a heart that suddenly existed in the chest cavity, the organ manifesting fully formed and immediately began to pump.

Thump-thump.

Thump-thump.

The sound was oddly loud in the quiet clearing, fifteen hearts starting to beat in synchronized rhythm.

Organs followed, lungs expanding to draw breath that didnʼt exist yet, stomach and intestines coiling into place, a liver that would filter toxins, and kidneys that would maintain balance.

All the complex biological machinery required for life, appearing piece by piece as if being assembled by invisible hands.

Then, the skin began to grow from the extremities inward, black scales forming one by one, each piece interlocking with its neighbors to create flexible armor.

The scales had that same reflective quality theyʼd possessed in life, mirroring the jungle around them even as they were still forming.

The panthersʼ faces were the last to complete.

Eyes manifesting in empty sockets, glowing with sudden awareness, noses and ears taking shape, tongues forming in mouths that had been empty cavities moments before.

Finally, after what felt like hours but had only been minutes, the first panther was complete.

It stood on shaking legs, seven feet of pure predator, scales gleaming, eyes filled with awareness and...

Recognition.

The creature looked at Jack, and he could feel the binding between them like a physical connection.

The other fourteen completed their reconstruction in rapid succession, each going through the same visceral process of bone, muscle, organs, and scales forming from nothing but their souls and the systemʼs help.

Fifteen Shadowfang Panthers stood in the clearing where moments before there had been only charred remains.

They were alive.

Kaedorʼs jaw hung open, his usual composure completely shattered. His rings had stopped clicking, his hands frozen in mid-gesture as he stared at the impossible scene before him.

”Thatʼs... thatʼs not possible,” he whispered.

”They were dead. Barely anything of them was left. Stormfang ate them. Their bodies were reduced to ash and fragments. There was nothing left to resurrect. Nothing to rebuild from.”
