I Died and Became a Noble's Heir

Chapter 316: [Contractor of Drakon]

The Factory - The next day

Jack stood in the center of his factory floor, surrounded by crates of materials and workers who’d stopped their tasks to stare at the three young women who’d just entered like they owned the place.

Because, technically, they did.

Octavia Kaiser surveyed the factory with the practiced eye of someone who assessed everything for strategic value.

Her golden eyes tracked inventory, worker stations, and the organized chaos of production, calculating costs, profits, and implications without seeming to try.

Celeste wandered between crates with casual interest, her usual carefree demeanor intact despite the factory’s utilitarian atmosphere. She poked at a bundle of herbs, wrinkled her nose at the smell, then moved on to examine monster parts with the detached curiosity of someone who found everything mildly entertaining but nothing particularly urgent.

Annabelle bounced on her toes near the entrance, her small frame radiating excitement.

”Jack,” Octavia said firmly. ”We heard you’ve been spending significant time here. Father mentioned you’d switched everything up.”

Jack gestured broadly at the surrounding operation. ”I’m changing the world, sister. One innovation at a time. What you’re looking at is the foundation of economic revolution that will reshape how people view daily necessities and military logistics.”

”How boring,” Celeste observed, picking up a mana potion vial and holding it up to the light. The blue glow painted her face in otherworldly shades. ”But probably accurate. These are good. Better than anything on the market. How many can you produce?”

”Four hundred eighty thousand by week’s end,” Jack replied. ”Twelve thousand per hour with the current workforce and materials.”

Octavia’s eyes widened fractionally, the only indication of surprise she allowed herself. ”That’s... unprecedented. The military implications alone would shift power dynamics across multiple kingdoms. If House Kaiser controls mana potion supply at that volume...”

She stopped mid-sentence.

Then the sky changed all at once. Instantly. As if someone had thrown a switch, and reality had decided daytime was optional.

Absolute darkness swallowed the afternoon sun. Black pressed down from above, replacing the blue sky with a void so complete that it felt like the world had been wrapped in a shroud.

Workers gasped. Some dropped tools. Others made warding gestures against evil magic or divine retribution or whatever superstition they’d been raised to fear when the natural order inverted itself.

Jack’s hand went to his knife hilt instinctively, his golden eyes tracking upward to stare at darkness that shouldn’t exist. ”What’s going on?”

Octavia’s expression had shifted from one of analytical interest to one of grim recognition. Her voice came out quiet, yet carrying a certainty that transcended doubt. ”Father is about to erase something off the map.”

Jack turned to her, confusion replacing combat readiness. ”What do you mean, erase something? This is just... weather magic? Some kind of spell demonstration?”

”No,” Octavia said, her eyes never leaving the blackened sky. ”There are only two people in this world who can affect reality with this kind of power. One was our grandfather, but he’s dead. The other is our father.”

Celeste had stopped poking through crates, her usual lightness evaporating as she stared upward with fearful eyes.

”I’ve only seen this once before. When I was seven. Father was dealing with a demon incursion that threatened to spill into Elysium. The sky turned black for three hours.

When it cleared, a crater remained where an entire forest had once stood. Nothing grew there for five years.”

Annabelle pressed closer to Octavia, her earlier excitement dimming into uncertainty. ”Is Father okay? Why is he doing this?”

”He’s more than okay,” Octavia replied, her hand finding Annabelle’s shoulder in reassurance that didn’t quite reach her eyes. ”He’s reminding everyone why they don’t challenge House Kaiser openly. Someone made a mistake. He’s correcting it.”

Jack processed this information, his mind racing through implications and possibilities and the sheer scale of power required to turn day into night across... how far? Just Sorne? All of Elysium? Beyond?

”How powerful is Father, exactly?” Jack asked, the question coming out quieter than intended.

Octavia finally looked away from the sky, meeting Jack’s gaze with an uncertain expression.

She was weighing how much truth he could handle.

”Strong enough that when he was younger, three kingdoms tried to assassinate him simultaneously. He killed every assassin they sent, tracked the orders back to their sources, and left messages written in the blood of their royal guards on three different palace walls, all in the same night. After that, no one tried again.”

She paused, then added softly, ”You’re powerful, Jack. What you did to those fifteen thousand mercenaries was impressive. It put you on the map as someone to fear. But Father? Father is the reason maps have borders in the first place. Because he’s the line no one crosses without being erased.”

The darkness above them intensified, somehow becoming blacker than black, like reality was being consumed by its own absence.

”Jack, it’s a shame you don’t have Father’s dark magic. He probably would have trained you personally.”

And in the distance, so faint it might have been everyone’s imagination, thunder rolled.

Meredith Estate - Present Day

Alaric stood where he’d stood for the past twenty-four hours, unmoving, as Adrian’s guards systematically evacuated every living soul from House Meredith’s territory.

Servants fled in organized lines, confusion written across their faces, but survival instinct overriding questions.

Soldiers surrendered weapons without resistance once they understood the alternative was facing Duke Alaric Kaiser directly.

Families gathered what they could carry and moved toward the secured area Adrian had established miles away.

The Meredith manor stood empty now. Abandoned.

Cassius approached from where he’d been coordinating final evacuations. ”Everyone’s clear. Adrian confirmed the last group reached safety ten minutes ago. We’re alone here except for the Merediths themselves—they should arrive within the hour based on Lyra’s timeline.”

Alaric nodded once. ”Good. Cassius, remove the chains.”

Cassius’s easy-going demeanor cracked for just a moment. Concern flickering across his face before professional composure reasserted itself. ”Alaric, you’re certain? Once they’re off, there’s no containing what happens next.”

”I’m certain. Remove them.”

Cassius raised his hand, his fingers moving in patterns that traced light through the air, as if he were writing a language in the air.

Light manifested around Alaric’s body in chains that had always been there but invisible until someone with proper sight chose to reveal them.

They wrapped around his chest, his arms, his shoulder. Dozens of glowing links that pulsed with power meant to cage a beast.

”In the name of Saint Claudette,” Cassius intoned, his voice carrying authority that transcended his usual cheerfulness, ”I release these bonds. May your burden be your own again.”

The light chains shattered. Exploding into motes of radiance that dispersed like stars going supernova. The sound was like the universe’s largest window breaking.

And Alaric’s power flooded outward.

Dark magic poured from him like blood from an opened artery. It seeped through his skin, coalesced in the air around him.

Alaric reached up slowly and, began to unbutton his shirt.

Each h button released felt ceremonial. Like he was removing armor.

The shirt fell away, revealing a physique that defied his age. Muscle layered over muscle, the kind of body built through decades of combat.

Scars traced his skin in silver lines, each one a story of survival, each one proof that he’d faced death and made it blink first.
