Chapter 282 ~ From the Ashes

Flames devoured the broken stone beneath her feet, the courtyard glowing a furious orange beneath the night sky. Smoke curled upward like serpents, blotting out the stars. What once was a proud academy battlefield now resembled the aftermath of a war zone.

Yet even as the heat clawed at her skin, Rias Gremory stood firm.

Her crimson hair danced in the scorching wind, her gaze fixed on the figure emerging from the fire.

Riser Phenex.

He walked through the inferno like a demon god, wings outstretched, each feather ablaze. Fire clung to his frame like a royal cloak forged in wrath.

His golden eyes—once smug, now incandescent—glared straight at her.

”You little insects… You dare humiliate me?!”

His voice cracked like a whip through the smoke. Aristocratic. Outraged. Entitled.

Rias exhaled slowly, controlling her heartbeat, burying the tremor of adrenaline that begged to rise.

“You’ve already lost too much, Riser.”

She kept her voice even. Calm. But her heart pounded with a cold edge sharpened by weeks of preparation. This was the moment—the culmination of the trials she and her peerage had endured.

He didn’t see it.

He still thinks we’re weak.

Riser roared, flames erupting around him as he surged forward, a spear of fire forming in his grip. The ground sizzled beneath each step, cracking beneath the intensity of his power.

But he wasn’t fast enough.

Yuuto Kiba moved before he could think.

His body reacted with precision honed through endless training. Twin demonic swords shimmered into existence, crossing in a defensive arc as he intercepted Riser mid-charge.

Flame met steel. Sparks flew. Heat surged.

He slid back from the impact, his boots carving scorched furrows through the stone—but he didn’t falter.

‘I wonʼt let him touch her. Never again.’

“NOW!”

Rias’s voice rang out like a commandment, and her peerage responded like a living organism.

Issei Hyoudou’s body surged forward, the gauntlet of the Red Dragon Emperor glowing.

“BOOST!”

The voice in his gauntlet echoed his cry, flooding him with strength. He felt power surge through his limbs like liquid fire.

He hit Riser from the side, drawing his wrath away from Rias.

He’s tough... but we’re tougher!

“Is this all you—?” Riser growled—

BAM!

A small fist hammered into his stomach.

Koneko Toujou appeared in silence, her small hand buried inside his gut.

Her punch sent Riser skidding across the courtyard, a shallow trench carved in his wake.

That’s for acting like you’re untouchable.

“You annoying brat—!”

“Crimson Annihilation!”

Power surged through her palm. The spheres appeared like planets of destruction, orbiting her with ominous crimson light.

She launched them. Dozens.

Riser countered, flames bursting forth like a solar flare. Some spheres were destroyed mid-flight—but the others curved, snaking in with terrifying precision.

“Wha—AARGH!”

The screams pierced through the night.

Rias stepped forward.

“Your regeneration won’t save you anymore.”

She spoke slowly, deliberately, recalling the advice she received from him.

‘You were right. I didn’t need to match his fire—I only had to break its foundation.’

Her thoughts turned inward.

She could almost feel Yuuji’s presence behind her. His quiet confidence. His relentless pressure. His lessons that pushed her past her limits.

‘He didn’t just make us stronger… he made us whole.’

“Your Power of Destruction is not just energy, Rias. Itʼs the embodiment of finality. Refine it. Focus it. Use it not as a hammer… but as an eraser.”

“Form up! We go in waves!”

Akeno Himejima smiled faintly. This is the moment she had been waiting for.

Black clouds swirled overhead at her call. Lightning slithered through the sky like dragons seeking prey.

“Let divine judgment be done…”

Kiba dashed in again, blades carving low. Every swing precise. Every strike deliberate.

Koneko hurled debris, disrupting Riser’s balance.

And his eyes widened in shock.

He didn’t expect this coordination to come from childrens!

In desperation, he unleashed a fiery shockwave, roaring.

“YOU THINK THIS CHANGES ANYTHING?! I AM RISER PHENEX!”

“And I—”

Her voice split the air like thunder. Her power rose like a blazing sun, her aura burning into a crown.

“—am Rias Gremory! And this is my family!”

With a snap, blades of destruction circled her and shot forward—homing in on Riser like divine instruments of retribution.

Each blade struck true. Each cut dismantled more than flesh—it severed his healing, his pride, his illusion of invincibility.

“DRAGON SHOT!”

Issei unleashed everything in one blast, point-blank.

It struck Riser dead center. The force sent him flying, flames sputtering from his form. He landed in a heap, coughing blood, armor cracked, expression dazed.

He tried to rise.

But the final strike came from above.

Lightning crashed down, divine and unforgiving, swallowing Riser in a pillar of white-hot light.

When the storm cleared, silence fell.

Rias stepped forward.

Her power receded, but her presence felt larger than ever.

She looked down—not with malice, but calm clarity.

“You underestimated me. You underestimated us.”

Riser groaned, barely conscious.

“H-how…?”

She turned to her team.

Kiba stood firm. Issei panted, eyes still burning with resolve. Koneko was bruised, but proud. Akeno’s hands still sparked with divinity. Asia had already begun healing the wounded.

This... this is what we’ve built.

She smiled.

“We’re not just a peerage anymore. We’re a team. A family. And I’ll never lose them to anyone.”

Riser’s golden eyes dimmed. His flames flickered out. His wings crumbled into ash.

The battlefield was still.

Then, a voice echoed from the sky:

“Riser Phenex is unable to continue. Victory: Rias Gremory’s team!”

The battlefield was quiet—eerily so. A moment ago, it had been chaos, fire, and fury.

Now, there was only the slow, labored breathing of victors.

Rias Gremory let her shoulders sag as the tension drained from her limbs. Her heartbeat slowed, no longer driven by adrenaline, but by quiet relief. Her boots stepped over cracked tiles and scorched earth as she approached the center of the ruined courtyard.

Her team slowly gathered around her.

Kiba, panting, wiped blood from his brow. His armor was scratched, but his expression was light.

Issei fell back onto the ground, arms wide, laughing breathlessly.

“We actually did it… Haha! We really beat that flaming turkey!”

Koneko crossed her arms, huffing softly.

“Took you long enough.”

But the ghost of a smile tugged at her lips.

Akeno, ever graceful even amidst the ash, walked over to Rias and brushed a strand of hair from her friend’s cheek.

“You were magnificent, Rias.”

Asia knelt beside Issei, healing a burn on his arm, her hands glowing softly.

“Everyone… thank goodness you’re safe…”

Rias looked at each of them—her friends, her family.

No longer just pieces in a noble peerage, but comrades who had grown, suffered, and fought as one.

This is what it means to defy fate.

She clenched her fist gently, holding in the tears building behind her eyes.

“Yes… We won… Together.”

‘Thank you Aika-san, Erika-san… and Yuuji-kun.’

--------------------------------X--------------------------------

In the lofty observation chamber overlooking the battlefield, silence hung heavy in the air. The tension, once wound tight like a drawn bowstring, had finally snapped—leaving only the hushed stillness of hard-won triumph.

Sirzechs Lucifer, the crimson-haired Devil King and sovereign of the Underworld, stood at the edge of the viewing platform. His usually composed expression softened as he gazed upon the magical display showing the final moments of the battle below.

And then… he smiled.

Not the polished smile of a diplomat.

Not the measured grin of a ruler.

But the gentle, unguarded smile of a brother—filled with pride, warmth, and something almost paternal.

“She’s grown.”

His voice was quiet, yet it carried a profound depth of emotion.

Beside him, Grayfia Lucifuge, ever the embodiment of poise and elegance, raised a gloved hand to her lips. Her silvery eyes shimmered—not with formality, but with quiet emotion she rarely allowed to surface.

“She has surpassed all expectations, my Lord. Not just tactically… but spiritually. This wasn’t simply a victory—it was an awakening.”

Sirzechs gave a slow, thoughtful nod.

“The Crimson Princess… has become a Queen in her own right. From this day forward, no one will refer to her merely as my little sister.”

He turned his gaze back toward the battlefield, where Rias now stood surrounded by her peerage. Amid the smoke and ruin, she shone—radiant with newfound dignity, unwavering resolve, and the unmistakable presence of a leader.

But then, a subtle shift passed over Sirzechs’ features. His smile dimmed slightly, replaced by quiet contemplation.

Grayfia, ever attentive, noticed the flicker in her husband’s expression.

“What is it?”

He didn’t answer immediately. A breath passed—a sigh, soft but heavy with meaning.

“I don’t want to diminish Rias-chan’s efforts. Or her peerage’s. They fought brilliantly. But…”

His crimson eyes narrowed slightly, the weight of his thoughts surfacing.

“Don’t you think their growth has been… too rapid? It’s only been ten days.”

Grayfia fell silent, the truth of his words sinking in. She, too, had noticed.

From the moment Rias’s team had annihilated Riser’s Rook and three Pawns in the Gymnasium, something had felt off. Not in a negative way—but in a way that raised questions.

The Rating Game now played through her mind with clinical precision.

Their strategy was not simply clever—it was refined. Far beyond what one would expect from a peerage playing their first official match.

Their individual strength had increased exponentially—an unnatural leap from what it had been barely a week prior.

And their coordination… That level of synchronized combat wasn’t something that could be achieved through ordinary training—certainly not in just ten days.

‘Someone guided them.’

Grayfia’s eyes remained fixed on the image of Rias and her team.

“I will inquire about their training regimen.”

Sirzechs gave another nod, but this time, a renewed smile tugged at his lips.

“Good. But that can wait.”

His gaze softened once more as he looked down upon his sister—free, victorious, and finally unshackled from the chains of expectation.

“For now… let’s celebrate her triumph. And her freedom.”

--------------------------------X--------------------------------

The astral projection shimmered, casting soft light across the chamber as it displayed the Gremory team, basking in the afterglow of their hard-earned victory.

A profound silence followed—not empty, but heavy with meaning.

Then—

“That was clean. They executed the plan quite well.”

Suzuki Satoru broke the silence, his skeletal visage betraying a glint of nostalgia in his tone.

Their teamwork, while still raw in parts, had resonated with something deep within him. It brought back memories of his days in Yggdrasil, of coordinated raids and near-impossible clears with his old guildmates. The kind of satisfaction that didn’t come from loot or rewards—but from perfect execution, shared trust, and a plan coming to life.

It’s not just about winning—it’s about winning together, he thought with faint pride.

Tatsuya and Lelouch offered quiet smiles, choosing not to speak.

There were certainly areas where Rias’s plan could be improved—tactical oversights, minor inefficiencies—but now was not the time for critique. This moment was hers, and theirs, and it deserved celebration, not analysis.

Semiramis, ever the calculating empress, also remained silent. Her interest lay not in the victor, but in the game itself—the Rating Game, this peculiar ”Peerage System” the Devils had developed. Her mind was already working, dissecting its political, strategic, and arcane implications.

“Mm… they’ve come a long way to reach this point,” said Erika, her voice tinged with pride.

Her gaze lingered on the image of Issei, Kiba, and Koneko—her self-proclaimed “pupils.” She had pushed them hard, pushed them beyond what they thought they could handle. But now, watching them fight and win as a team… it was worth it.

Meanwhile, C.C. watched silently, her golden eyes fixed on Asia as the girl gently healed her injured friends. There was something serene, almost divine, about the way Asia moved—pure-hearted and gentle in a world filled with violence.

“Fufu~ Rias-senpai and Akeno-senpai’s magic has gotten so strong too,” Aika teased, elbowing Yuuji playfully. “Aren’t you proud, hubby~?”

Albedo, ever graceful and devoted, smiled sweetly as she turned to her beloved.

“My love, it is thanks to you they’ve achieved this victory.”

“You took a disorganized mess of children… and forged them into something almost respectable.”

Her voice was pure admiration—devotion wrapped in reverence.

Yuuji said nothing for a moment. He simply smiled, quiet and content.

“They’ve worked hard,” he finally said, voice calm and full of conviction.

“This is what happens when someone believes in them. Guides them.”

This result was not unexpected. It was inevitable.

After everything he, Aika, Erika, and the twin slimes had done… the outcome had already been decided.

Still, watching Rias, Akeno, and the others stand tall, victorious and unburdened—it filled him with a quiet joy.

One mission, complete.

He exhaled softly, his eyes narrowing as he looked to the future.

“Now… it’s time for the next phase.”

His gaze shifted—first to Erika, then to C.C., Lelouch, and Tatsuya—each of them meeting his eyes, already aware of what was coming.

“We’ll be enrolling at Kuoh Academy starting next Monday.”
