The Fire Nation Prince

Chapter 25: Your Future Fire Lord

The air in the war room felt heavier now. The torches lining the stone walls flickered slightly, casting long shadows that danced like spirits across the massive map table in the center of the chamber. Fire Lord Ozai stood with his hands clasped behind his back, his golden eyes fixed on the intricate details of the world map before him.

Azula, still standing opposite him, felt something unusual—something she was not accustomed to. Doubt.

She had always been the favored child, the prodigy, the one with limitless potential. From the moment she first produced blue flames, it had been clear to everyone, including her father, that she was destined for greatness. She had been raised with one undeniable truth: she was superior to Zuko in every way.

And yet, here stood her father—the most powerful man in the world—declaring that her banished, disgraced brother had returned from exile with the Avatar as his prisoner. That he had done the impossible.

It made no sense.

”Father,” Azula spoke again, her voice controlled but firm. ”You cannot possibly believe Zuko. We have no proof. What if he’s lying?”

Ozai’s eyes shifted to her, the intensity of his gaze making her straighten her posture. ”We will see about that when he arrives,” he repeated, his voice unwavering, carrying the weight of absolute authority.

Azula clenched her teeth, but before she could protest, Ozai continued, his words slow and deliberate. ”Zuko knows the conditions of his banishment. He knows that he would not dare attempt trickery—not when so much is at stake.” His tone hardened as he stared into her golden eyes. ”And neither should you.”

The words cut through her like a blade, cold and sharp.

Azula inhaled deeply through her nose, willing herself to remain composed. She could tell by her father’s tone that he had already made up his mind. There was no room for negotiation, no convincing him otherwise.

Still, she needed to know. She needed to hear it from him, from his own lips.

”So what does this mean for me?” she asked, her voice quieter now, controlled but tinged with something else—something almost fragile. ”As your heir?”

For the first time since the conversation began, Ozai turned his full attention to her. He stepped closer, his towering presence forcing her to tilt her chin up slightly to meet his gaze. His expression was unreadable—neither cruel nor kind, but absolute.

”Zuko has done the impossible,” Ozai declared. ”He has found and captured the Avatar. He, if what he says is true, has proven that he is not weak—but a strong and powerful firebender. A worthy heir to me.”

Azula felt her breath hitch slightly.

”As such,” Ozai continued, his voice like rolling thunder, ”he will be the Crown Prince of the Fire Nation once more. He will be YOUR Crown Prince.”

Silence filled the room, suffocating and absolute.

Ozai leaned in ever so slightly, the firelight reflecting off his sharp features. ”He will be YOUR future Fire Lord.”

Azula stared at him, her mind racing. She felt the sting of something unfamiliar, something she had never truly allowed herself to feel—rejection.

Her fingers curled into fists.

Her father—her father—was replacing her.

A mix of emotions swirled within her—anger, disbelief, humiliation. But above all else, there was betrayal.

She had worked her entire life to prove she was superior. She had won every battle she fought, crushed every opponent, surpassed every expectation. And yet, here was Zuko, returning from exile after years of failure, after years of proving himself weak, and suddenly, he was worthy?

It was absurd.

Her lips parted as if to speak, but no words came. Instead, she clenched her jaw, her breath unsteady, and without another word, she turned on her heel and stormed out of the war room.

Her footsteps echoed sharply through the grand halls of the palace, her vision slightly blurred as she fought the burning in her eyes.

No.

She would not allow this.

Azula’s anger burned hotter with each step as she descended the palace stairs and walked toward the military wing, where she knew the soldier who had delivered the letter would be.

She found him in one of the main halls, standing with another guard. Upon noticing her approach, the soldier quickly stood at attention, bowing his head respectfully.

”Princess Azula,” he greeted cautiously.

She stopped a mere foot away from him, her golden eyes boring into his. ”When did the message from Zuko arrive?”

The soldier straightened. ”The carrier bird brought it less than half an hour ago, Princess. It was delivered to the army communications tower.”

Azula’s brow furrowed. ”And before this, when was the last time my brother sent a message?”

The soldier hesitated slightly, clearly sensing her agitation. ”I am not entirely certain, Princess,” he admitted. ”But I believe it was… three months ago? He was requesting additional supplies.”

Azula narrowed her eyes. ”So for three months, there was nothing. And now, suddenly, he has done the impossible?”

The soldier gulped slightly, uncertain if he should respond.

Azula’s mind raced. This was far too convenient. Zuko had sent nothing for months, and now, out of nowhere, he claimed to have captured the Avatar? The timing was suspicious—too suspicious.

Her father was willing to accept this news without question. But she wasn’t.

The soldier shifted slightly. ”Princess, if you seek further details on Prince Zuko’s recent movements, you may have to speak with the chief at the communications tower. He monitors most of the reports from other bases in the area where the prince was sailing.”

Azula studied him for a moment before finally stepping back. ”Fine,” she said coldly. Without another word, she turned on her heel and walked toward the palace exit.

As she made her way down the marble steps of the palace and into the courtyard, her mind burned with questions.

Something isn’t right.

Zuko was a failure. A disgrace. She had watched him be beaten in an Agni Kai, had seen him fall to his knees in shame. He had spent years chasing ghosts and returning empty-handed, a laughingstock of the royal family.

And now, she was supposed to believe that he had succeeded? That he had somehow bested the Avatar and was returning victorious?

No.

There was more to this. And if her father refused to see it, she would uncover the truth herself.

Azula’s jaw tightened, her hands balled into fists.

If Zuko thought he could take from her what she had rightfully earned, he was sorely mistaken.

With that final thought, she stepped out of the palace gates and into the capital city, her destination clear.

The communications tower.

She would find out the truth.
