Chapter 325: Chapter 322~ Cherry Blossom on the Blade

The workshop smelled of coal smoke and hot metal. Ryu sat at the workbench, running the blade across a whetstone in slow, rhythmic strokes. Each pass sharpened the edge further, and the sound of steel on stone filled the quiet space.

The door opened.

Kaori straightened at once and bowed to Hiruzen. ”Lord Hokage.”

Shiroi Okami stiffened when he saw who stood at the door. His grandfather’s eyes widened, and he bowed deeply despite his bandaged hand.

”Hokage-sama,” the old man said, his voice filled with reverence. ”This humble workshop is honoured by your presence.”

Ryu set the whetstone aside and stood, bowing respectfully.

”Long time no see, Lord Hokage,” he said. ”What brings you here?”

Hiruzen Sarutobi stepped inside with a calm smile, like he had all the time in the world. His shadow fell across the floorboards.

”I was in the neighbourhood,” Hiruzen said, ”and I heard quite the commotion. I thought I’d see what was happening.”

The lie was clean. Too clean. But Ryu kept his face polite.

”My mobile telephone network has come back to bite me,” he thought. ”Signals cover the village. If a crowd sneezes, the Hokage hears it. My every movement is being reported in real time.”

”Of course, Lord Hokage,” Ryu said. ”Just finishing a bit of a challenge.”

Old Hokage rubbed his chin.

Kaori stepped forward.

”If I may explain, Lord Hokage,” she said. ”Shiroi challenged Ryu-san to prove his skill. And Ryu-san forged a blade to prove himself.”

Hiruzen looked at Shiroi, then the workbench. He knew the boy and the accident that had befallen him and quickly understood Ryu was here to invite him to his clan.

”May I see the scabbard?” he asked.

Ryu nodded and handed him the scabbard.

The Hokage lifted the sheath and turned it in his hands. Gold joinery held the wooden halves together. Cherry blossoms had been carved into the lacquered surface with a care that did not look like a child’s work.

”Remarkable,” Hiruzen said. ”This is excellent craftsmanship.”

”Thank you, Lord Hokage,” Ryu replied.

Hiruzen set it down gently and nodded at the blade.

”And the sword?”

”Nearly complete,” Ryu said. ”Just the final parts.”

”You can continue,” Hokage said.

Ryu moved to the cast for the sword guard and broke it open. The sword guard fell free, still warm, its flowing shape matching the scabbard’s pattern. Ryu picked up a rotary buffer and smoothed the last rough spots. The tool whined, then went quiet. The guard caught the light like polished glass.

Ryu assembled the sword with quick, exact movements. Guard first. Then the wooden hilt over the metal core. Then the gold alloy endcap that locked the pieces together.

He used a special thread to tightly wrap the sword’s grip in a diamond pattern.

When he lifted the sword, it looked complete.

Hiruzen stepped closer and judged the balance with a small shift of his hands.

”It’s a fine sword,” he said.

Kaori moved closer, her eyes drawn to the blade.

”It’s beautiful, boss,” she said.

Ryu turned it once, watching the edge.

”Not beautiful enough,” he replied. ”In my eyes, it’s not yet perfect. It lacks the essence of true beauty I aim to achieve.”

The old bladesmith leaned forward from where he sat.

”What do you mean?” he asked. ”It is already exquisite.”

Shiroi nodded.

”What more is there?” he asked.

Ryu reached for his summoning scroll. Glass jars appeared with small puffs of smoke. Clear liquids sloshed as he lined them up on the bench. He measured and mixed them into a long container, just the right size for the blade. The solution turned a pale amber.

The workshop went quiet.

The old bladesmith frowned.

”What are you doing?” he asked.

Ryu did not answer. He lowered the blade into the liquid.

The surface fizzed softly, then steadied.

Ryu counted in his head for thirty seconds.

He lifted the sword out. Grey residue clung to the steel like mud.

He wiped the residue from the steel once.

Nothing.

He wiped again.

Thin lines appeared.

One more pass, and the pattern opened across the blade.

Cherry blossoms flowing through the steel itself. The flower petals on the blade were formed by infusing chakra metal at their centres. The pattern complemented the sheath, but the blade looked alive in a way wood could never be. Each petal seemed to shift with the light, creating the illusion of movement even when the steel lay still.

The old bladesmith took a sharp breath.

”How is this possible?” he said. ”In all my years, I have never seen anything like this.”

The old man leaned forward in his seat, his weathered hands trembling. He had spent fifty years at the forge, shaping metal into tools and weapons. He had taught apprentices, won commissions from ninjas, and even crafted blades for minor nobles. But in all those decades, he had never witnessed anything like this.

”I thought I understood smithing,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. ”I thought I knew what was possible with steel and fire.” He shook his head slowly. ”This... this is beyond mastery. This is art that breathes.”

Kaori stared, words stuck somewhere behind her teeth.

Hiruzen’s smile thinned into something careful. He was already impressed, but now he was at a loss for words.

Ryu held the tip up and shifted the angle. Light slid across the blossoms, making them flash and fade.

The old smith fell silent, overwhelmed by the sight.

”This is the work of a master,” he said.

Kaori stepped closer to the old bladesmith. ”Please convince your grandson. The Hamura clan has all facilities to take care of you and your grandson,” she said quietly. ”Your grandson will have access to everything he needs.”

The old man looked at Kaori, his eyes searching for reassurance. ”Will my grandson have a promising future?” he enquired.

”He will have the chance to build one,” Kaori replied.

Ryu slid the sword into its sheath. The fit was smooth. No scrape.

”Now it’s complete,” Ryu said.

Shiroi stared at the sheathed blade. Then he looked at his grandfather. Then back at Ryu.

His posture changed. The doubt was still there, but it was losing ground.

”You were right, Grandfather,” Shiroi said. ”I have never seen anything like this.”

He slightly bowed to Ryu.

”I was wrong to doubt you. This is the greatest blade I have ever witnessed.”

Ryu nodded.

”Will you join my clan?” he said. ”I want to make this world better and I need all the help I can get. Will you bear the name Hamura alongside Okami?”

Shiroi looked to his grandfather.

The old man smiled through his pain.

”Follow him,” he said. ”Look for the opportunity ahead. I am an old man now. I want to rest, knowing you are in safe hands.”

Shiroi’s jaw tightened in determination. He remembered the phantom weight of the genjutsu arm Ryu had projected onto him—a promise of what could be restored. He could keep hammering with one hand until his body broke, or he could bet on the boy who just made steel bloom.

Hiruzen stepped in.

”I vouch for the Hamura clan,” he said. ”It has no ill intentions like most ninja clans when adopting civilian kids.”

Shiroi breathed out slowly, like he was finally letting go of a weight he had carried for too long.

”I agree,” Shiroi said quietly. ”I will join the Hamura clan.”

”Then from this day, you will be known as Shiroi Hamura Okami,” Ryu said. ”Stand with me and help me build a better world.”

”Welcome to the family; you can call me brother from now on,” he said.

Shiroi hesitated, then spoke again, voice steady.

”Brother,” he said, ”will you teach me your methods?”

”I will definitely teach you. We are family now,” Ryu said.

Hiruzen watched the exchange with the quiet attention of a man who had brokered a thousand deals. The boy was building a clan not through blood, but through skill and loyalty. That was rare.

Hiruzen cleared his throat.

”Wait,” he said. ”A blade like this needs a name.”

”I’ll think of a good name for her,” Ryu said. He looked around the cramped workshop. ”Do you know a good place where we can test this properly?”

The old bladesmith spoke up. ”This place is not suitable for testing a chakra metal blade, Hokage-sama. Such a weapon needs open space.”

”I know just the place,” Hiruzen said. ”Follow me.”

The crowd outside parted quickly when they saw the Hokage leading the group through the workshop door. Ryu summoned a wheelchair from a storage scroll and helped the old bladesmith into it. The man accepted with quiet dignity, too tired to protest.

The training ground sat away from the busy streets, surrounded by trees. A rolled mat had been set up in the centre, the old standard for testing a blade’s cut.

When they arrived, ANBU were already in the branches. Kaori stood beside the wheelchair near the edge of the clearing, the old bladesmith watching intently.

Kakashi and Tenzo crouched on a high limb, masks on. Captain Ro watched from above them and Yugao stood nearby. Shisui Uchiha watched from a distant branch, still in ANBU gear.

Kakashi leaned towards Tenzo.

”I didn’t know he made blades,” Kakashi said.

Tenzo kept staring at the scabbard.

”Look at that craftsmanship,” Tenzo said. ”I want one.”

”This sword was made for a challenge,” Kakashi replied. ”He won’t be making more. Ryu prefers creating things that contribute to society on a larger scale. Even his fuinjutsu are all defensive or utility.”

Yugao’s voice carried down.

”Let’s see what this blade can do,” she said.

Hiruzen faced Ryu.

”Before we begin,” he asked, ”have you decided on a name?”

Ryu rested his hand on the scabbard and drew the blade slowly.

Steel slid free. The cherry blossoms caught the light and flashed across the edge.

A few quiet sounds came from the trees, more like disbelief than praise. Everyone was stunned to see the unsheathed blade.

Tenzo’s breath caught. Yugao’s hand tightened on her own sword hilt.

”Stunning,” someone whispered.

”It looks like spring,” another voice said.

Ryu raised the blade and examined the cherry blossom pattern in the steel.

”I’m going to call her [Senbonzakura],” Ryu said.
