I Was Written as Cannon Fodder, Now I'm Rewriting the Genre

Chapter 69: Chapter 65: This Is My Sincerity

Yin Zhen spent the entire night trying to hear the resonance of her blood, but failed. Her body was different from S717; without the muscle memory granted by the Training Pod, she had to start everything from scratch.

Despite staying up all night, she didn’t feel exhausted—just incredibly hungry. However, she had no money for breakfast. She needed to go out, open a bank account, and ask Bai Qiang for living expenses!

The early morning light peeked through the gaps in the curtains. Yin Zhen picked up her phone and glanced at the time.

July 18th, 7:32 AM.

She still remembered that her first transmigration to the Red Corpse World was on July 7th at 7:00 PM. Only ten days had passed in the real world, yet it felt like months. Her life had been turned completely upside down.

Yin Zhen stood up. With her agility increased by ten points, she could now move freely.

She rummaged through her room for her usual clothes and packed a low-profile outfit, planning to find a spot outside to change and move unnoticed.

While looking for clothes, she uncovered her high school uniform. Yin Zhen froze. She pinched the hem of the uniform, flipped it over, and saw the layer of fabric sewn inside. Instantly, her nose stung, and her heart gave a painful squeeze.

”Zhenzhen, Mom sewed a hundred-yuan bill inside your uniform. If you run into an emergency, like needing to buy pads or something, just rip it open and use it. Don’t be reluctant to spend it.”

Yin Zhen tilted her head back, trying hard to fight back her tears, but they spilled out rebelliously anyway.

”Thank you, Mom.”

She took out the hundred-yuan bill, wiped away the tear tracks on her face, folded the other set of sportswear, and tucked it under her wheelchair cushion. Summer clothes were thin and light; it wouldn’t be noticeable when she sat on it.

Yin Zhen continued to play the part of a disabled person and wheeled herself out the door.

As soon as she reached the ground floor, a police car pulled up outside the apartment building. Three officers stepped out. Among them, a female officer smiled upon seeing Yin Zhen and walked straight over.

”Yin, are you heading out? It’s been a few days. You look much better.”

It was the female officer in charge of her case.

Yin Zhen nodded sullenly. ”I’m out of food at home.”

Right on cue, her stomach let out a loud grumble. Yin Zhen pressed a hand to her stomach and turned her head away in embarrassment.

The female officer smiled. ”You still remember my phone number, right? Guan City has been a bit chaotic lately, and it’s inconvenient for you to be alone. If you ever need help, call me anytime.”

Yin Zhen continued to nod sullenly. She wanted to ask what had happened, but swallowed the words before they could leave her mouth.

”Alright, go get some breakfast. Make sure to eat plenty!”

The female officer and her two colleagues headed upstairs. Yin Zhen guessed that the incident involving the household upstairs had likely been discovered—the Blood Clan girl she had killed.

As she wheeled herself toward the neighborhood gate, the elderly neighbors who had caught wind of the news were already whispering among themselves. Through this well-informed intelligence network, Yin Zhen confirmed that it was indeed the family upstairs.

The two adults hadn’t gone to work in a long time, and the child hadn’t gone to school. Both the school and their employers had called the police, so the officers came to verify the situation.

There was no zombie outbreak upstairs. Most likely, the daylight had shone into the room and turned the corpses into ash.

Sheng Yehan had died, but surprisingly, no news of it had broken out.

She wondered if his family simply didn’t care, or if Nan Jiamu had done something to cover it up.

The breakfast shop was right at the neighborhood gate. Yin Zhen ordered a basic bowl of porridge and some steamed buns.

The boss brought over a large bowl of red bean porridge, two meat buns, a braised egg, and a chicken leg.

Yin Zhen paused in surprise and looked up at the man.

He was a burly, fierce-looking man. Yin Zhen had once seen him flip a neighboring stall and curse for a solid half-hour just because they splashed water onto his storefront.

But at this moment... the boss wiped his hands on his apron and said gruffly, ”Just made these this morning. Try them and see if the seasoning is right. I won’t charge you.”

Yin Zhen opened her mouth, wanting to decline, but her stomach grumbled again. Besides, she didn’t like pointless back-and-forth arguments.

”...Thank you.”

Yin Zhen lowered her head and took a sip of the porridge. A comforting warmth spread from her mouth straight to her heart.

She ate everything clean and went to pay, but the boss waved his hand. ”No cash. Just put it on your tab. Come back and settle it when it rounds up to a nice number.”

Yin Zhen’s hand, holding the hundred-yuan bill, paused mid-air for a moment. Ultimately, she put the money away, said thank you, and wheeled herself out.

Passing by a supermarket, she went in to buy water. As the cashier scanned the barcode, he suddenly said, ”Your reward points can be redeemed for a box of instant noodles. Do you want it?”

Yin Zhen frowned. ”I never registered for a rewards card.”

The young cashier smiled. ”As long as you’ve bought something here once, it’s automatic. The instant noodles are nearing their expiration date anyway, so it’s a perk to reward old customers. It’s not worth much. Usual routine, I’ll have someone deliver it to your door later? Need anything else?”

”...Thank you.”

Yin Zhen wheeled herself out. The sunlight fell on her, feeling overwhelmingly warm.

She hated being pitied—hated it with a passion. But the root of that hatred was actually fear. The fear that she wouldn’t be able to repay them.

She was too weak. So weak that accepting even a little kindness made her feel indebted.

Yet, she respected such kindness, and she respected the people radiating it.

The system had asked her what made her choose to protect a world that had hurt her.

She wanted to say that it wasn’t the world that hurt her; it was the bad people in it.

Steam rose from the breakfast stalls along the street. Office workers hurried past with their bags, and students carrying backpacks waited at the intersection for the light to turn green.

The mornings in this world were just as she remembered—bustling, noisy, and full of the vibrant breath of life.

When her mother was still alive, they had been a part of this vibrant life, too.

Yin Zhen pushed her wheelchair, slowly making her way toward the bank.

She liked this human warmth. Even if she was weak, even if she had been crushed by fate, she still liked it.

She liked herself, and she equally liked the ordinary, weak people around her.

Perhaps that was the reason why, when threatened by Lucy, she had unhesitatingly chosen to protect the Ancient Abyss.

Yin Zhen wheeled herself into an old, well-established bookstore. It was quite large, spanning two floors.

With the prevalence of e-books over the years, the bookstore was on the verge of bankruptcy. However, the boss was very laid-back; he made his money through other businesses and still opened the bookstore’s doors every day. He let the elderly come in to chat and enjoy the air conditioning, and he allowed children to read freely inside.

Several of the security cameras inside had been broken for a long time. Yin Zhen went into the restroom and changed her clothes. She took out her compact mask, hid it under her garments, and stored her wheelchair in her inventory space.

She turned off her phone, retrieved Ding Yi’s Identity card, shoved it into her pocket, and headed out. As she passed a bookshelf, someone suddenly called out to her.

”Young man, could you do me a favor? Help this old man grab that chess manual from the top shelf.”

Yin Zhen paused and walked over to the elderly man asking for help.

”You’re a good lad. Quite handsome, too. Are you married? Where do you work? I have an eldest granddaughter, just turned twenty-two this year, been an outstanding girl since she was little...”

Yin Zhen’s mouth twitched, and she quickly made a run for it.

It seemed Ding Yi’s Identity card was very effective. As long as she kept it on her person, others would perceive her as the male Ding Yi.

The process of opening a bank account went incredibly smoothly. Yin Zhen even specifically checked the facial recognition photo taken by the bank—it showed Ding Yi’s fake face, which meant the surveillance footage would undoubtedly show the same.

After leaving the bank, Yin Zhen sent the name and card number to Bai Qiang via a private message on the forum.

At that moment, Bai Qiang was at home, staring mournfully at an empty cat bed. She was searching on her phone: ”What to do if a Dragon Li cat abandons its owner?”

As soon as the private message arrived, Bai Qiang sprang up from the sofa. After reading it, her face scrunched up.

”Sending the name and account number so brazenly? Aren’t they afraid of being tracked down? Ding Yi? Are they sure it’s not a fake name? But you can’t open a bank account with a fake Identity...”

Bai Qiang thought for a moment and decided to forward the name and account number to Nan Jiamu. She was also very curious to find out the true Identity of her unseen partner.

Heavenly Dao Rewards Diligence: ”Transfer five million first. Put ’This is my sincerity’ in the memo.”

At the Information Center, Nan Jiamu, who had just finished an all-night meeting, saw the private message and scrunched up his face as well.

”Using my money to show your sincerity? Not even trying to hide it, huh? Heavenly Dao Rewards Diligence, you’ve really got some nerve! Wang, make the transfer first. Then investigate this account and find this person!”
