The SSS-Rank Deveror Who Abandoned Glory to Raise Four Daughters

The dungeon entrance was not subtle.

This was not unusual — dungeons rarely were. They had a quality to them that the land around them absorbed over time, a heaviness, a particular stillness that wasn’t peaceful but was instead the stillness of something held back. The eastern complex outside Venmoor had been active for decades and the area around its entrance showed it — the trees thin and pale, the ground bare in patches where nothing had decided to grow, the air carrying the specific dry mineral smell of deep stone exposed to mana for a long time.

What was unusual was the crowd.

He’d expected a handful of adventurers. Maybe a small party checking equipment before entry. Standard dungeon traffic for a mid-morning.

What he found was forty people.

Not entering. Gathered. The specific quality of a crowd that had formed around something and was in the process of deciding what to do about it.

He came up the path and took in the shape of it — the cluster near the entrance, the ring of observers further back, the general body language of people who were watching something rather than doing something.

He found a position at the edge of the crowd and looked.

The young party was easy to spot.

Five of them. Young — sixteen, seventeen at most, the specific quality of people who hadn’t yet developed the practiced adventurer’s way of taking up space. Their equipment was serviceable and clearly not new, the kind of gear that had been bought used and maintained carefully, every piece chosen for function over appearance. They had the organized readiness of a team that had planned this, talked about it, prepared — and the slight rigid quality of people who were nervous and were managing it through preparation.

Three boys. Two girls.

The tallest of the boys had a sword on his back and the bearing of someone who had decided he was responsible for the group’s safety and was taking that seriously. Next to him a shorter boy with a staff and the specific careful stillness of someone who was listening to everything at once. The third boy was compact and quick-eyed, daggers at his belt, already watching the crowd around them rather than the dungeon entrance.

One of the girls had a bow — small, efficiently built, already scanning angles out of habit. The other had a healer’s satchel and was standing slightly closer to the group’s center than the others, the instinctive positioning of someone whose role was to be reachable.

They were talking to each other in low voices. Planning. The swordsman was pointing at something near the entrance — the dungeon’s outer markers, probably, the guild posts that indicated documented floor conditions.

He watched them.

Thought, without meaning to, about a clearing behind a house in Ashfeld. About four people who had stood in various formations over fifteen years and talked about plans with the same specific quality of people who trusted each other completely.

He was still watching them when it happened.

The man who caused it was large in the way that some men were large — not usefully, not with the functional density of someone trained, but with the accumulated bulk of someone who had used size as a substitute for skill for long enough that the substitution felt real to him. He was moving through the crowd with the expectation of parting and the crowd was parting, mostly, because it was easier than not.

He wasn’t watching where he was going.

The shorter boy with the staff was.

But watching and moving in time were different things, and the crowd shifted, and the man walked directly into the boy and the boy went down with the specific sound of someone who had been hit by something they couldn’t brace for.

The man stopped.

Looked down.

Something moved through his expression that was not concern.

”Oi,” he said.

The boy was getting up. Already apologizing — the instinctive reflex of someone who’d learned that being in the way of larger things was always their fault regardless of circumstances. ”Sorry, I didn’t see—”

”Didn’t see.” The man repeated it with the specific quality of someone who found the words useful ammunition. He looked around at the crowd — checking his audience, Cidd noted, the way people did when they wanted to perform something. ”Didn’t see. Little rat runs into me, doesn’t see, and thinks sorry covers it.”

”It was an accident,” the swordsman said, stepping slightly forward. His voice was controlled. He was being careful.

”Who asked you.” The man looked at him. ”You with this little—” he looked at the boy still on the ground— ”this group.”

”We’re together, yes,” the healer girl said.

”Right.” He looked at all five of them with the expression of someone finding a target. ”Bunch of children playing adventurer. Look at that gear.” He said it to the crowd. The crowd did what crowds did around this kind of thing — went carefully uninvested in both directions. ”Come out to the dungeon entrance with their toy equipment and their—”

”He apologized,” the bow girl said. Quiet but clear.

”Did I ask—”

”He apologized,” she said again.

The man looked at her.

Then back at the boy, who was fully up now, staff in hand, jaw set, doing the specific arithmetic of someone calculating whether the situation required a different response than de-escalation and coming to an answer they didn’t want.

”Get on your knees,” the man said.

The boy looked at him.

”Properly. On your knees. Apologize properly and maybe I don’t make this worse.”

The swordsman’s hand moved toward his sword.

The man’s two companions — who had been standing back with the quality of people who’d seen this before — stepped forward.

The crowd did its thing.

And Cidd walked through it.

He didn’t walk quickly. He didn’t announce himself. He simply moved from the edge of the crowd to the space between the man and the young party with the directional certainty of someone who had decided where they were going and was going there.

He stopped.

Looked at the man.

The man looked at him.

”Who are you,” the man said.

”Someone who was watching,” Cidd said.

”This isn’t your business.”

”The boy apologized,” Cidd said. ”You heard him. That’s where it ends.”

The man stared at him. He was larger than Cidd by a significant margin. He had two companions. The crowd was watching. The arithmetic of the situation, from his perspective, was clearly in his favor and he was doing the specific recalculation of someone who had expected an obstacle and found a smaller one than anticipated.

”Walk away,” the man said.

”No,” Cidd said.

The man swung.

It was the same quality of swing as the drunk in the guild hall — committed, heavy, the confidence of someone who had won arguments this way before and saw no reason to expect differently now.

Cidd caught his wrist.

Not dramatically. Just — caught it. The way you caught something you’d already moved to intercept before it arrived. His hand closed around the man’s wrist and the swing stopped and the man found himself in the specific physics problem of having committed everything to a motion that was no longer going anywhere.

He tried to pull back.

The hand didn’t move.

He tried harder.

It still didn’t move.

And then something changed.

It didn’t come with a sound or a visual — nothing visible happened. Cidd didn’t do anything that could be pointed to or described in simple terms. He simply — allowed something. A fraction of what he was, the outermost layer of it, to stop being contained.

It was enough.

The two companions sat down. Not intentionally. Their legs made a decision independently of their intentions and the decision was the floor, immediately, because standing required a certain relationship with the world around you and the world around them had just become something that standing was not compatible with.

Several people at the edge of the crowd stepped back without deciding to.

An experienced adventurer — B rank, silver-haired, the kind of weathered that came from decades of actual work — went pale. She’d been watching the whole thing with professional detachment and the detachment was gone, replaced by something that looked like the expression of someone who had just remembered something they thought they’d forgotten about what the world contained.

The weaker adventurers in the crowd felt it as pressure — physical, like the air had gained weight, like gravity had briefly renegotiated its terms. Two of them grabbed something nearby without knowing they’d done it.

The man whose wrist was in Cidd’s hand felt it as certainty.

Not the physical pressure. Something else. The specific certainty of a creature in the presence of something that was not on the same tier of existence as what it was used to existing near, communicated not through reason or thought but through the deep wordless language of survival that every living thing shared.

The certainty said: you have made an error.

The certainty said: this is what the last moment before the end feels like.

The certainty said: apologize.

He apologized.

Not with dignity. Not with the performance of the first apology he’d demanded from the boy. Just — the word, said quickly, with everything behind it.

Cidd released his wrist.

The man stepped back. His companions were already moving. The crowd parted for them differently than it had before — not out of deference to size but out of the specific understanding of people who had just watched something and were making room for whatever came next.

They left.

The air returned to normal.

Cidd turned to the young party.

The boy with the staff was staring at him. All five of them were staring at him with variations of the same expression — the specific combination of what just happened and are you a person that adventurers sometimes wore around things they couldn’t categorize.

”You’re alright?” Cidd said, to the boy.

The boy nodded. Then seemed to remember that nodding required muscle control and confirmed that his muscles were currently all working. ”Yes. I — yes. Thank you.”

”Are you hurt?”

”No.” He looked at his hands. ”No, I’m fine.”

Cidd looked at all five of them.

”What are you doing here?” he said. Not unkindly. Just directly, the way he asked things.

They told him.

It came out in pieces, the way things came out when people were still adjusting to a situation and talking was something to do with the adjustment. The swordsman’s name was Ren — he introduced himself first with the natural authority of someone the group defaulted to in formal moments. The boy with the staff was Dav, the one who’d been knocked down, who had recovered his composure with the speed of someone used to recovering it. The quick-eyed one with the daggers was Fenn, who said his name briefly and went back to watching the surroundings. The girl with the bow introduced herself as Lys. The healer was Mae.

Five of them. Formed the group a year ago. Had been taking quests in the surrounding regions — small things, accessible things, building enough of a record to attempt the dungeon.

Why the dungeon specifically.

Mae answered that one. She said it quietly, without performance, the way people described things they’d already decided were true and didn’t need to convince anyone of. She wanted to attend a mage academy in the capital. The entrance fee and living costs were beyond what her family could provide. The dungeon’s documented completion reward for the first five floors was enough, with careful management, to cover enrollment for a year.

She said it matter-of-factly.

She’d clearly said it many times before to herself, this plan, worked it out, confirmed the math, decided it was possible.

The group had decided it with her.

Cidd looked at all five of them.

He thought about four people in a clearing at dawn. About training dummies and morning forms and the specific quality of people who had decided something together and were going to see it through regardless of what it cost them.

”Have you been in a dungeon before?” he said.

”Three times,” Ren said. ”Smaller complexes. Two floors each.”

”This one goes to ten,” Cidd said.

”We know.”

”The guild documentation stops at three.”

”We know that too.”

He looked at them.

”Go to floor three,” he said. ”Document it properly. File it with the guild and take the floor documentation reward on top of the completion fee. It’s less than the five-floor reward but it’s consistent — you can do it multiple times until you’re comfortable with what’s below three.”

Ren looked at him. ”How do you know the documentation reward is separate from the completion fee?”

”Standard guild structure,” Cidd said. ”Always has been. A lot of new adventurers miss it because it’s filed under supplementary income rather than primary quest reward.” He looked at Dav. ”Your staff work — you favor the left side when you cast. Not dramatically, but enough that anything with pattern recognition is going to predict your angles after the third spell. Vary the grip.”

Dav stared at him.

”You—” He stopped. ”You saw that just now?”

”You did it twice while you were standing here,” Cidd said. He looked at Fenn. ”You watch exits before you watch threats. Good habit in towns. Reverse it in dungeons — the threat is usually between you and the exit.” He looked at Lys. ”Your draw is clean. Your release has a hesitation. Something to work on.”

Lys looked at her bow. Then at him.

”You watched all of us,” she said.

”Yes.”

A pause across all five of them.

”Who are you,” Mae said.

”Cael,” he said.

The name sat in the air.

”Just Cael?” Ren said.

”Just Cael.”

They looked at each other. Then back at him.

”You’re going into the dungeon?” Dav said.

”Yes.”

”Alone?”

”Yes.”

”Which floor?”

He picked up his pack. ”I’ll see.”

He reached into his pack. Found what he was looking for without having to look — one of the small flat stones he carried, smooth, the size of a coin, a specific enchantment worked into its surface that had taken him two weeks to perfect and which he’d made twelve of and distributed to people he wanted to be able to reach.

He held it out to Ren, who was clearly the one who handled things the group received.

Ren looked at it.

”What is it?” he said.

”A teleportation anchor,” Cidd said. ”If any of you are in a situation you can’t get out of, hold it and push mana into it. Whoever carries the other end will come to you.”

Ren took it carefully. Looked at it. Looked up. ”You have the other end?”

”Yes.”

”You’d come to us.”

”Yes.”

A silence.

”You don’t know us,” Lys said. Not accusatory. Just — noting it.

”I know enough,” Cidd said.

He looked at all five of them one more time.

Dav was looking at him with the expression of someone in the process of deciding something. It was a large decision, by the look of it, and it was happening fast.

”I’m going to be like you,” he said. Suddenly. With the specific conviction of something said before it was fully considered and turning out to be true. ”I don’t know who you are but I’m going to be — I’m going to work until I’m like you.”

Cidd looked at him.

He thought about a twelve-year-old on a dark road with forty silver coins.

”Work harder than you think is necessary,” he said. ”And then work harder than that. That’s all it is.”

He turned toward the dungeon entrance.

Behind him he heard Lys say, quietly, to no one in particular:

”Did anyone else feel that — earlier? When he—”

”Yes,” Fenn said. Just that. The way people confirmed things that didn’t need more words.

”What was that,” Mae said.

A pause.

”I don’t know,” Ren said. ”But I want to find out.”

The experienced adventurer who had gone pale was still standing where she’d been.

She had thirty years. She had seen things. She had developed, across those thirty years, a sense for what the world contained and what it didn’t, and what it didn’t contain — or what she’d thought it didn’t contain — was what she’d just felt standing in a crowd outside a dungeon watching a man she didn’t know look at a bully.

She had felt it once before.

Once. In a story. In a conversation with a guild master in a town she’d passed through five years ago who had told her, over drinks, about a record he’d seen that didn’t make sense. About an adventurer who had appeared in the system at twelve years old and done things that twelve-year-olds didn’t do and then stopped appearing entirely at eighteen and left behind a record that, if you looked at it carefully, looked like the beginning of something that should have continued but didn’t.

She hadn’t thought about that conversation in years.

She thought about it now.

She watched the man called Cael walk into the dungeon entrance.

She watched him until he was gone.

Then she went to find a courier.

She had a letter to write.

The dungeon swallowed him.

The transition from outside to inside was immediate in the way dungeons always were — the light changed, the sound changed, the specific quality of the mana changed from ambient to structured, the particular organization of a space that had developed its own internal logic over decades of active monster population.

He stopped just past the entrance.

Let his eyes adjust.

Let his senses adjust — all of them, the evolved ones and the natural ones, the complete picture assembling itself in the first thirty seconds the way it always did when he entered somewhere new.

Floor one.

He looked at it.

Rolled his neck once.

Felt the specific readiness of a body that had been waiting for this longer than it had known it was waiting.

Walked forward.
