Apocalypse: I Raised the Ultimate Antagonist from Scratch

In the dim night-lighting of the dining room, Han Ye stood before Lin Qing, his face completely devoid of any childish emotion. The broad shadows stretching across the polished concrete floor behind him seemed to tremble slightly, clinging to the hem of his dark, oversized sweater like living threads.

”I used my shadows,” Han Ye said, his small voice cutting cleanly through the dead quiet of the room. ”I extended them out past the lower drainage outlets and through the deep snowdrifts near the mouth of the gorge. There’s a massive horde of mutated zombies holding on standby just beyond the ridge. They aren’t wandering, scavenging, or searching for shelter from the sub-zero wind. They are standing completely still, lined up in tight rows, waiting for an order.”

Lin Qing’s dark eyes narrowed slightly as she absorbed the information, her hand holding the cup of water tightening just enough to crease the cardboard. ”The Blue core is holding them back on a leash.”

Han Ye nodded once, a sharp motion. ”The Blue Core acts as a centralized commander. It binds their minds directly to its own frequency, controlling every movement down to their breath and muscle spasms. But it has one critical weakness—and it’s the only way we win this fight when the full siege begins. The Blue Core’s primary processing node is concentrated entirely behind its upper sternum, right beneath its secondary rib plate. If that core’s signal is disrupted by a physical rupture or pierced by a high-frequency shock, its command link breaks instantly. Without that central brain guiding them, the horde will turn feral, tear each other apart in confusion, or collapse entirely.”

He paused, his pitch-black, unblinking eyes flickering briefly toward his shared room.

”And then there’s Su Xiao,” Han Ye continued, his tone turning noticeably cautious. ”I’ve felt her energy shifting whenever she sits down to draw. Su Xiao likely has an active mental connection with her mother. Her mother is moving toward this valley right now.”

Lin Qing took in every single word, her mind rapidly processing the weight of his warnings. Han Zheng had already told her about Su Xiao and her mother, her mother was no ordinary infected. The horde waiting on standby beyond the ridge, the centralized control node, it aligned with the eerie, calculating behavior the blue core had displayed during the morning probe. It wasn’t just a beast; it was a field general organizing a massive, multi-pronged assault.

She looked down at the five-year-old boy standing before her, her gaze turning intense and penetrating.

”I understand the shadow tracking, and sensing the energy shifts in Su Xiao as well,” Lin Qing said, her voice dropping into a quiet, serious register. ”Everything else makes sense. But how do you know the Blue Core’s specific physical weakness, Han Ye? How do you know about its hidden processing node behind the sternum?”

Han Ye looked back up at her without a single trace of hesitation, discomfort, or fear. His small face remained completely smooth, his dark eyes wide and unblinking in the cool blue light.

”My shadows told me,” Han Ye said simply.

Before Lin Qing could press him further or question the mechanics of his bizarre sensory ability, the boy turned around, pulled his sweater tight around his shoulders, and walked silently out of the dining room. His small boots made no sound against the sealed floor, his form dissolving into the dark shadows of the residential suite as he returned to his shared room.

Lin Qing did not stop him but she knew he was not telling her the full truth either.

Left alone in the shadowy dining room, Lin Qing stood in complete silence for a long moment, the cool cup of water forgotten in her hand. Her mind was churning—fraught with Han Ye’s startling revelations, the possibility of another powerful infected nearing, and the chaotic, lingering fragments of her own fractured nightmare.

The image of the motionless body in the ash-filled hallway kept flashing behind her eyelids. The pale face, the torn uniform, the dark hair—the face of the captive woman in Block C.

Knowing that falling back asleep was an absolute impossibility tonight, Lin Qing tossed the paper cup into a waste bin and turned on her heel. She walked briskly out of the residential suite, down the main hallway toward the primary lift shaft and selected the lower levels.

The deep subterranean level was noticeably colder and more sterile than the residential quarters above. The air here was damp, carrying a faint scent of concrete dust and chemical disinfectant.

Lin Qing walked down the long, heavily reinforced corridor of the holding wing, her boots echoing softly against the concrete until she reached the door of the one holding the captive woman.

She swiped her high-clearance keycard through the reader, and the heavy pneumatic locks disengaged with a loud, resounding metallic clank.

The thick steel door slid back smoothly, revealing the mysterious captive woman, she was not sleeping on her cot like Lin Qing had expected.

She was sitting upright on a low wooden chair positioned in the exact center of the cell, dressed in her simple gray tunic. Her hands rested quietly in her lap, and her eyes were fixed directly on the heavy entrance door, watching Lin Qing step through as if she had been expecting her arrival all along.

Lin Qing didn’t speak immediately. She pulled a heavy metal stool over from the observation desk and set it down, sitting down directly across from the prisoner.

For a few quiet seconds, neither of them moved. Only the soft, steady hum of the cell’s specialized atmospheric filtration system filled the small space between them.

Then, the captive woman leaned forward slightly, her pale, smooth face serene yet weighed down by an old, invisible sorrow.

”You’re awake late,” the woman said softly, her voice smooth, low, and slightly raspy from long periods of disuse.

”I had a strange dream,” Lin Qing replied simply, keeping her posture perfectly straight and her tone carefully neutral.

The captive woman offered a faint, melancholy smile, her dark eyes reflecting the cool LED lighting of the containment chamber. She leaned her back gently against the wooden chair and tilted her head, looking at Lin Qing not as a dangerous prisoner looks at her captor, but as an old traveler looks upon a deeply familiar face.

”I used to know a woman,” the captive began quietly, her voice carrying a soft, captivating narrative cadence that seemed to fill the cold containment room. ”She was an orphan, left with absolutely nothing in a cruel, unyielding world that had no mercy for the weak or the helpless. She had nowhere to go, no family to rely on, and no place on earth to call her home. So, the moment she came of age and met the minimum height requirement, she enlisted in the military, hoping to find structure, security, and order in a world of chaos.”

Lin Qing sat completely still on her stool, her hands resting on her knees, listening in total silence as the woman spoke.

”But military life is not easy,” the captive continued, her eyes gazing slightly past Lin Qing’s shoulder, as if staring through the reinforced concrete walls and into the distant, buried past.

”The command structure was cold and brutal. She faced corrupt, incompetent superiors who viewed low-ranking recruits as disposable assets to be spent without second thought. She endured ruthless, bullying colleagues who tested her patience and resolve every single day. She lived in freezing barracks, surrounded by hostile faces, wondering if she had simply traded one form of misery for another.”

The woman paused, taking a slow, quiet breath that sounded almost like a sigh.

”Yet, despite all the cruelty and hostility around her, she found a home,” the captive said, her tone softening with a delicate, fragile warmth. ”She found it in one other person—another lost soul, an orphan just like her, struggling through the exact same dark, unforgiving system. They didn’t share any blood, but they shared every ration meal, every exhausting night watch, and every bitter punishment handed down by their officers. Over time, they became sisters. Not by blood, but by heart.”

A faint, trembling breath escaped the woman’s lips, her calm facade cracking for a brief second to reveal a deep, aching grief that seemed to stretch back years.

”Then, fate took over,” the woman whispered, her voice dropping into a soft, sorrowful cadence. ”A sudden, emergency deployment separated them. They were torn apart by high-level orders they were powerless to fight, pulled to opposite sides of a broken, burning world.”

She lowered her gaze to her folded hands in her lap, her shoulders dropping slightly as she delivered the final words.

”And she misses her sister every single day.”

Lin Qing sat in complete silence on her metal stool, her dark eyes fixed on the captive woman behind the thick glass, absorbing every word as a strange, unexplainable chill settled deep inside her chest.
