My Werewolf System

Chapter 1842 1842: The Message From The King

Gary had met the Vampire King in passing before, but that brief, shadowed interaction had left him with more questions than answers. It was impossible to tell if the King viewed werewolves as a legitimate threat, a nuisance, or something else entirely.

If there was one thing Gary was truly grateful for in this moment, it was that the message was being delivered by Blackjack, a face he knew, rather than a nameless, terrifying aristocrat, like the leaders he met before, he could only imagine if it was Rowa in the room instead.

”Go on,” Gary said, his voice steady despite the adrenaline still humming in his veins. ”Iʼm ready for whatever you have to say.”

His mind was a whirlwind of dark possibilities. Had the vampires finally sniffed out that they were harboring Marcus? Were they coming to collect a debt of blood, or perhaps demanding the Howlers act as their foot soldiers in some upcoming conflict? Just like they did with the Altered Hunters. Or, in the worst-case scenario, was this just a polite formality before they declared an all-out war of extermination?

Blackjack cleared his throat, his expression unreadable as he began to speak in a flat, rehearsed tone. It was clear he was reciting the Kingʼs words verbatim, preserving the royal weight of the message.

”It appears as if the matter of the rampaging werewolves across the country has finally been resolved,” Blackjack began. ”The reports from my fellow leaders have noted your true intent to stop the chaos. Although we initially prepared to lend a helping hand, largely to ensure the secrecy of the supernatural world, you have managed to accomplish this Herculean task on your own. Whether the crisis was an error on your kindʼs behalf or a catastrophic mistake from a member of your own group, it no longer matters.”

”If it really didnʼt matter, why did he feel the need to bring it up?” Innu whispered under his breath.

Blackjack paused, his eyes darting toward Innu with a sharp, predatory intensity. Innu immediately snapped his mouth shut and stood as straight as a soldier on parade.

The messenger continued: ”As part of our aid, we have made sure that no one will remember the travesty that had occurred. We have tried our best to make sure no one rememberes the events that have occurred and erased as much evidence as we can, although not perfect it is enough for them to forget.

”I must personally thank you, Gary Dem, and your Howlers, for mitigating the danger to the public. I wish I could offer these thanks in person, but I am currently occupied with matters of grave importance within my own kind. Therefore, I have a few final words I wish for you to remember.”

A heavy silence filled the kitchen, the kind of silence that made the Howlers hold their breath in anticipation of a blow.

”We have a role in this world, a role to protect humanity,” Blackjack recited. ”Just as humans wish to protect animals and the delicate life around them, we, as beings with power far beyond their comprehension, have taken up this guardianship from the shadows. It is this shared role that has caused werewolves and vampires to clash so violently and so frequently in the centuries past. However, the Howlers are the first pack I have witnessed that is truly diverse.”

Blackjackʼs eyes swept across the room, taking in the mixed group. ”Two Alphas standing side by side in cooperation, surrounded by Altereds and humans alike. This is a unity we cannot ignore, a feat that we, due to our own nature, have never been able to replicate.”

Kai leaned back, realizing the subtext. He knew the King was likely referring to the vampiresʼ biological need to consume human blood; a society doesnʼt easily integrate with its own food source. Werewolves might be monsters on the night of the full moon, but for the rest of the month, they could satisfy their hunger with regular food and live alongside humanity, and he had yet to hear the good news.

”I do not wish to ruin this harmony you have fostered,” Blackjack continued. ”And perhaps, for the first time in history, there can be harmony between our two races as well. Which is why I am formally declaring a time of official peace between us. A fresh start. I hope the Howlers continue to be a positive force for humanity, just as we strive to be. If you agree to these terms, please inform my messenger. I will be waiting for your answer.”

The room was stunned into a profound silence. The Howlers looked at each other, almost unable to believe what they were hearing. Was it really that simple? Could Gary just say ”yes” and end centuries of racial tension? Was it possible to live on the same planet without the constant shadow of a shadow-war looming over them?

Or was this the ultimate trap? A move to lul the Howlers into a false sense of security before the vampires struck from an angle they hadnʼt covered?

”What do you honestly think of this, Blackjack?” Gary asked, looking the vampire in the eye. ”Is he for real?”

”I believe the Kingʼs words are sincere,” Blackjack stated plainly. ”To my knowledge, neither this King nor any of his predecessors has ever reached out to a werewolf pack in this manner. You must understand, Gary, vampires are incredibly prideful beings. In the past, it was always assumed that if the fighting were to stop, it would be because the werewolves crawled to us to beg for scraps of freedom. But we both know that was never going to happen with your kind.”

Gary nodded. He knew Lupus would have sooner died than beg for a fraction of the freedom he believed was his birthright.

”By reaching out like this, the King is essentially stepping down to your level,” Blackjack added. ”I wonʼt lie and say he acknowledges you as his equal, that isnʼt in his nature. But he respects you, Gary. He respects what youʼve built and the power youʼve shown. That respect is the strongest foundation for peace weʼve ever had. So, tell me: do you accept this fresh start between our races?”
