She Lives without Regret in This Life

Chapter 213: Chapter 215: Invalidated Chapter Chapter 213: Chapter 215: Invalidated Chapter “Alright then,” she thought, knitting was indeed quite tiring, so she didn’t say much else.

Xu Qigang drove her back to the General Union. Wary of being seen, Sheng Ning asked to get out far from the destination and walked the rest of the way back on her own.

Xu Qigang watched her in silence, a hint of dissatisfaction in his eyes.

Did he really hate being seen that much?

When she returned to the dormitory, Zhang Hongmei hadn’t come back yet. Sheng Ning set down the yarn and then went to the small shop at the General Union to buy some daily necessities.

She still ate lunch at the cafeteria, and on her way out, she passed by the porter’s lodge. Seeing her name written on the blackboard placed at the entrance, Sheng Ning excitedly rushed in.

“Uncle, is there a letter for me? My name is Sheng Ning.”

With two to three thousand people in the entire General Union, except for official correspondences managed by the Office of General Affairs, everyone else’s private letters were all placed in the porter’s lodge. Every day, the names of those who received mail would be written on the blackboard outside.

The uncle was a retired comrade who, unable to part with the General Union he had been with all his life, had been entrusted with managing the porter’s lodge.

“I know you’re Sheng Ning. Now, who in the whole General Union doesn’t know you!” The uncle was sprightly, his eyes gleaming with more warmth than even when he looked at his own granddaughter.

Everyone in the union respected those with talent. That’s why countless people across the Four Regions admired Xu Qigang, regardless of age, position, or rank.

Sheng Ning’s three shots, all bullseyes, had long been known by everyone, causing a huge stir in the rescue world, completely beyond the comprehension of fellow women comrades.

This was a living Sharpshooter, whose gun skills could rival those of the Living Yama. Fortunately, he was from their union. If he had been from another, the whole union would feel a sense of crisis.

Realizing the reason, Sheng Ning bashfully smiled, “Uncle, I’m here to pick up my letter.”

“I’ve prepared it for you already.”

The uncle took out a white envelope from the drawer, on which was affixed a five-cent stamp.

Sheng Ning received the letter and, recognizing her mother’s handwriting, immediately expressed her thanks.

Once outside the porter’s lodge, she stood under the warm sun, opened the letter, and read it quickly.

Shen Luhua’s handwriting was even prettier than An’an’s. The letter began with a query about her recent situation and then mentioned that everything was fine at home and the bean sprout business was doing well. The focus, however, was on how Xu Qigang’s parents had personally come to propose marriage.

At this part, Sheng Ning’s hand holding the letter trembled slightly.

When had he sent his parents to propose? Why hadn’t he told her?

Continuing to read, Shen Luhua mentioned that the family hadn’t given an immediate response, telling Xu’s family to wait for an answer, and they’d written to ask for Sheng Ning’s opinion.

At the end of the letter, with careful wording, Shen Luhua said, “Don’t worry about the money we still owe the mayor. They will find a solution. Xu Qigang is a highly suitable son-in-law for Sheng Laosan. If you like him, don’t miss out.”

Sheng Ning sighed. Just how big of a jerk had she been in her past life to constantly go against her mother! Even though she was her step-mother, she was more qualified than many birth mothers.

After all, it was her own lack of judgment and brainlessness in listening to Qin Cuifen in her past life, all too quick to believe Shen Luhua had ill intentions.

In the end, it was all because she was foolish.

Having finished the letter, her emotions complex, she carefully put the letter back into the envelope and stored it away. Walking back to the dormitory, she happened to run into Qiu Bai.

Qiu Bai greeted her with a smile, “Didn’t go home?”

“There wasn’t enough time; wouldn’t have made it back,” Sheng Ning greeted Qiu Bai in return.
