Facing an Ancient God for a Year

Chapter 650: Chapter 648: Old Path (Eight)_1 Chapter 650: Chapter 648: Old Path (Eight)_1 Given Jones’s suggestion, Kateman and Lei certainly had no reason to continue to refuse.

On the way up the mountain, although no words were spoken, Fu Qian, who continued to sit in the police car, could feel that the sheriff’s attitude had become slightly more amiable.

It seemed that after the previous crime scene investigation, in his mind, his own suspicion index had dropped a bit.

From a cold-blooded animal who covered up his crime after hitting someone, he became a psychopath who could occasionally offer valuable suggestions.

“Where did you go after your wife drove out yesterday?”

In an even more depressing atmosphere than before, Jones suddenly asked, looking at Harold as if he had remembered something.

“I was at home all the time…”

“Does anyone have proof?”

“No one can prove it.”

Harold responded fluently to the sheriff’s questions, only his mood sounded quite repressed, hunched over in his seat, looking rather dejected.

“I hardly went out all day.”

Right.

Silence fell in the car again, and Jones did not continue to question.

Fu Qian understood his feelings quite well.

In Jones’s original judgment, this case should have been straightforward.

It was nothing more than Mrs. Harrold getting hit by her own car, then in a rush to avoid responsibility, she hastily disposed of the body and asked her friends to keep it a secret, pretending nothing happened,

The search that had just taken place was clearly based on this assumption, and Jones was convinced the body was under that pile of branches and leaves.

Unfortunately, the facts showed that not only was there nothing there, but no other traces were found nearby either.

Clearly, Jones found this hard to accept.

Because in his view, this had exceeded his own capabilities.

Even if one assumed to be a cold-blooded beast, finding such a hiding place for the body in an unfamiliar environment was already quite impressive, and it was almost impossible to have the peace of mind to deliberately create confusion.

Later, they also found Mrs. Harrold’s car, which clearly contradicted the assumption of a traffic accident.

The doubts about himself became even harder to establish.

As an experienced sheriff, Jones clearly had the fine tradition of this field, which is to doubt everything.

With his own suspicion reduced, his choice to ask Harold where he was yesterday was undoubtedly based on another possibility—that he had orchestrated a series of events to kill his wife.

But it was just a slight suspicion.

The previous operations undoubtedly demonstrated considerable execution, far beyond what an average person could accomplish.

Given how Harold’s body was still trembling slightly at the moment, the possibility of hiring a hitman to commit the murder even seemed greater.

…

“It’s been almost ten years since I came here, as gloomy as ever.”

Soon after arriving at the destination and getting out of the car, Jones looked around the yard and uttered a long sigh.

“But it’s cleaner than I imagined.”

Walking through the main door, he casually surveyed the surroundings.

“All thanks to Fran’s efforts.”

Lei said quite modestly from the side.

“Is that so, well done.”

After glancing at Fran, Jones did not skimp on his praise.

Next, he toured the building in a manner of revisiting old haunts, not sparing the basement collections either.

And facing the horrifyingly designed Iron Maiden, he too fell silent for a long time.

Of course, he certainly didn’t come here for a trip down memory lane.

Jones still seemed skeptical about the students’ overly clean car, and it seemed he had followed to see if there was anything unusual here.

Lei appeared to understand his purpose and did not express any objections, even proactively sharing the feat of Fu Qian crawling inside the car.

And this publicity obviously made everyone else look at Fu Qian even more strangely.

…

“What exactly is your purpose in coming here?”

After making a round with no findings, Jones took the opportunity to walk over to Fu Qian.

“I find it hard to imagine someone like you would participate in such a boring holiday game.”

“The two females inside don’t seem to have the talent to bewilder you.”

“Don’t demonize me too much, after all, I’m just a twenty-year-old young man.”

Fu Qian defended with a smile.

“I’m at the undoubted peak of hormone secretion, coming out to indulge with a group of peers. Is there anything odd about that?”

“Oh, then who is Laxik?”

“Hm?”

“I talked to Mary, and it’s quite obvious that you asked some strange questions after dinner last night.”

Jones stared at Fu Qian, not missing any of his reactions.

“Just a casual question, since when is having a brain fart against the law?”

Facing Jones’s unprecedented stern gaze, Fu Qian maintained his smile and did not deny it.

“You know, young people always have some inexplicable thoughts.”

“…Very well!”

Clearly not used to dealing with such a tough guy, Jones stared at Fu Qian for a long time before deciding to signal his subordinates and Harold to descend the mountain.

This should be just the right touch, shouldn’t it?

And as he watched the police car drive away, Fu Qian silently mused.

Last night, he indeed had asked Mrs. Harrold if she knew who Laxik was.

Having lived locally for many years, and her husband being the chief of police, Mrs. Harrold would normally be the perfect person to know about this matter.

In the end, he received a negative response.

Mrs. Harrold was very sure that there was no one named Laxik around here.

As for this outcome, Fu Qian wasn’t too surprised, as it wasn’t his main objective.

To get someone like Jones to help, directly asking was almost impossible, for he wouldn’t do anything he deemed boring or unnecessary. Therefore, special methods were needed.

Someone like him, who believed he could see right through a person with just one look, would not allow something he didn’t understand to exist within a certain scope.

What you tell him directly, he won’t believe, but if it’s hidden, and should there be a need, he would try everything to figure it out.

Kateman’s group’s abnormal behavior yesterday, along with the fact that Jones left the dinner after receiving a phone call, led Fu Qian to tentatively conclude that something indeed happened, deciding to use this method to throw out the name Laxik.

He was still considering how to make himself seem suspicious to draw more attention to the name when he was blindsided by Jones’s impressive ability to make assumptions, saving him quite a bit of effort.

Fu Qian was very much looking forward to seeing what efforts Jones would make in investigating the name Laxik.

…

Except for Fran, the other three obviously didn’t rest well last night, and soon everyone went back to their rooms, not even gathering for lunch.

Fu Qian found the rare silence pleasant and continued to rest up and conserve energy.

However, this peace did not last for long. Just after noon, a soft knock on the door was heard.

Fu Qian went to open it and saw Fran standing outside, her expression indescribably nervous.

Upon seeing Fu Qian open the door, she looked relieved, leaned in close, and whispered with caution.

“Jessica has disappeared.”
