Reborn in Football to Build Top Clubs from English League Two

23: Giant KillerInside the Hartlepool United locker room.

Vardy sat in a corner, his hands constantly rubbing his thighs. The excitement of scoring was still coursing through his veins, but his eyes were already contemplating the tactics for the second half.

Schmeichel was inspecting his gloves, meticulously moving each finger. After that crucial save, his confidence had completely erupted. The goalkeeping instincts bestowed upon him by his Danish heritage were fully awakened at this moment.

“We can win.”

Simpson’s voice was soft. The Manchester United youth academy full-back’s eyes gleamed with a desire for victory.

Snodgrass, meanwhile, was silently changing his socks in the corner. The Scotsman’s face was filled with concentration, every subtle movement preparing for the second half.

Old John pushed open the door, the flush on his face not yet faded.

“Lads, you played exceptionally well in the first half.”

His voice trembled slightly, excitement making it difficult for the old coach to control his emotions.

“In the second half, we need to make one adjustment.”

Old John’s gaze fell on the quiet Icelandic teenager on the substitutes’ bench.

“Gylfi, you’re coming on for Sweeney.”

Sigurdsson stood up, without a hint of nervousness on his face. At sixteen, he possessed a composure beyond his years. He nodded and began to take off his jacket.

“The boss said that Leicester City’s midfield maestro, Matt Oakley, is starting to tire.”

Old John’s voice grew more and more excited.

“We need to pluck out their linchpin and make them too busy to worry about us.”

The deeper meaning of this statement could only be understood by those who truly understood football.

Matt Oakley was the core of Leicester City’s attacking system; his organizational skills and passing vision supported the entire midfield. Once his coverage area diminished due to fatigue, the entire defensive system would show vulnerabilities.

And Sigurdsson’s task was to exploit this vulnerability.

The whistle for the start of the second half sounded.

In the stands of Victoria Park, nearly ten thousand fans roared in unison. Such a wave of sound was enough to make any professional player’s blood boil.

Leicester City clearly intensified their offensive.

Rob Kelly’s halftime talk had an effect, and the Foxes’ players’ faces were etched with unwillingness. They could not accept being held to a draw by a group of League Two youngsters.

In the 48th minute, Leicester City earned a free-kick opportunity just outside the penalty area.

Matthew Oakley stood over the ball, taking a deep breath. This position was not unfamiliar to him; in the Championship, he had previously helped his team to victory with similar free-kicks.

Run-up, shot!

The ball arced sharply, heading straight for the top corner of the goal.

Schmeichel made a breathtaking save on the goal line. He practically flew horizontally, his right hand fully extended, his fingertips touching the ball at the last moment.

The ball was slightly deflected, hit the post, and bounced out.

The entire stadium erupted in thunderous applause.

“Schmeichel! It’s Schmeichel again!”

Martin Tyler’s voice was already starting to get hoarse.

“The difficulty of that save was extremely high, and Schmeichel demonstrated the quality of a top goalkeeper!”

But the real turning point came in the 55th minute.

Sigurdsson picked up the ball in midfield, and facing the pressing Danny Tuff, the Icelandic teenager displayed astonishing skill.

After two consecutive feints, he successfully evaded the defense, then delivered a precise through ball.

Vardy understood perfectly, successfully beating the offside trap.

Facing the onrushing goalkeeper, Paul Henderson, Vardy opted for a low shot. The ball was blocked by the goalkeeper’s leg, but Hartlepool United had already shown everyone their attacking threat.

“Beautiful play!”

Andy Gray’s voice was filled with admiration.

“Sigurdsson’s pass was incredibly accurate, and Vardy’s run was perfectly timed. This Icelandic youngster seems to have a lot of flair!”

Leicester City began to feel the pressure.

They had originally thought they could easily win the second half, but reality caught them off guard. Hartlepool United not only did not retreat but became even more aggressive.

In the 62nd minute, the crucial moment arrived.

Matt Oakley was visibly fatigued during a tackle, and his coverage area began to shrink. Sigurdsson keenly noticed this detail.

Lin Feng nodded slightly in the box.

The data displayed by the [Tactical Analysis Module] completely matched his expectations. Oakley’s running distance had significantly decreased in the second half, and his passing accuracy had also started to fluctuate.

This was another side of the difference in class.

While Championship players were technically more mature, their stamina reserves were not necessarily better than these young players. And in this kind of intense confrontation, stamina often determined the direction of the game.

In the 68th minute, Hartlepool United earned a free-kick opportunity in front of the penalty area.

The foul occurred at the edge of the box, approximately 22 meters from the goal. For a technically skilled player, this was an excellent scoring opportunity.

Sigurdsson stood over the ball.

There was no hint of stage fright on his sixteen-year-old face; his eyes were incredibly calm. This mental fortitude far surpassed that of his peers.

Run-up, shot!

The ball arced perfectly through the air, curving over the wall and flying directly into the top right corner of the goal.

Paul Henderson dived to save, but the angle of the ball was too tricky.

The net rippled.

2-1!

Hartlepool United had taken the lead!

Victoria Park instantly erupted.

Nearly ten thousand fans roared in unison, the sound wave sweeping through the entire stadium. Sigurdsson ran towards the stands, arms outstretched, a pure smile on his face.

“Unbelievable!”

Andy Gray’s voice was filled with shock.

“A 16-year-old from Iceland scores such a brilliant free-kick in the League Cup! Where on earth did this Hartlepool United team find so many talented players?!”

Leicester City’s players looked at each other.

They couldn’t understand why these League Two youngsters could continuously create threats in such a short time. What puzzled them even more was that the technical level these young players displayed was in no way inferior to Championship players.

Rob Kelly frantically waved his arms on the sidelines, trying to get his players to reorganize their attack. But his face had turned ashen, and beads of sweat were forming on his forehead.

After conceding the goal, Leicester City began to push forward in full force.

They committed more players to the attack, trying to equalize in the remaining time. But this impatient mindset actually gave Hartlepool United more space for counterattacks.

In the 75th minute, a Leicester City attack was thwarted by Schmeichel.

The Danish goalkeeper immediately threw the ball to Simpson on the right flank. The Manchester United youth academy full-back didn’t hesitate, sending a long pass directly to Vardy in the attacking third.

Vardy chested the ball down, turned, and unleashed a powerful shot.

The ball flew past the post and out for a goal kick, but its fierce power had already sent shivers down Leicester City’s defensive line.

Time ticked by, minute by minute.

Leicester City’s attacks grew more intense, but Hartlepool United’s defense, commanded by Schmeichel, was as solid as a rock. Every danger was dealt with promptly, and every counterattack was full of threat.

In the 88th minute, the final test arrived.

Leicester City striker Gary Taylor-Fletcher received a pass in the penalty area, and facing Schmeichel’s block, he opted for a powerful shot.

The shot was powerful and at a tricky angle.

Schmeichel made a world-class save at the last second. He fully stretched his entire body, using his right hand to tip the ball over the crossbar.

The entire stadium once again erupted in thunderous applause.

“Schmeichel! It’s Schmeichel again!”

Martin Tyler’s voice was completely hoarse now.

“That save was simply miraculous! At the most critical moment, Schmeichel saved the team with a world-class save!”

The referee looked at his watch, raised his right hand, and signaled three minutes of added time.

The final three minutes became Hartlepool United’s showtime.

They did not choose to defend passively but continued to look for counterattacking opportunities. Vardy and Snodgrass ran tirelessly in the attacking third, every touch potentially a deadly blow.

In the 2nd minute of added time, Sigurdsson delivered a precise long pass from midfield.

The ball sailed over Leicester City’s entire defensive line, landing perfectly at Vardy’s feet. Facing the onrushing goalkeeper, Vardy opted for a chip shot.

The ball went over the goalkeeper’s head but just wide of the goal.

A collective sigh of regret swept through the stadium.

The referee’s whistle blew.

The match ended.

Hartlepool United 2-1 eliminated Leicester City!

Victoria Park completely erupted.

Fans rushed out of the stands and onto the pitch. They couldn’t control their inner joy; this night would become one of the most unforgettable memories of their lives.

The players embraced tightly, sweat and tears mingling.

Vardy roared to the sky, releasing all his emotions. Schmeichel was lifted high by his teammates, his face beaming with the joy of victory. Sigurdsson stood quietly to the side, a faint smile on his lips.

Old John was so excited on the sidelines that he was incoherent.

He couldn’t believe it was all real. An hour ago, he was still worried about whether the team could withstand the pressure. Now, they had actually defeated the Championship powerhouse, Leicester City.

This wasn’t a dream.

This was reality.

In the media box, reporters furiously typed on their keyboards.

This would be the headline news of all sports newspapers tomorrow. A League Two team eliminating a Championship powerhouse, such an upset was enough to shock the entire English football world.

Sophie Green gripped her pen, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

She knew this report would be a turning point in her career. This mysterious Hartlepool United team, this young owner from China, their story was just beginning.

Lin Feng slowly got up and walked towards the exit of the box.

His face remained calm, but his eyes gleamed with satisfaction. This victory was not just a result; it was a beginning.

The [World-Class Club Development Platform] glowed gently in his mind.

“Lin Feng! Lin Feng!”

The fans had already started chanting his name. This mysterious Chinese owner was changing the fate of this team in an unprecedented way.

He knew this was just the beginning.

There were more “giants” waiting to be defeated.

Championship, League One, Premier League.

Each level had its own tests.
