Wilderness Survival with Druid System

The gossip time between the Golden Eagle and the Snowy Owl didn’t last long.

After chatting for a while, they started the main event—hunting.

Considering that Wuwu, the Northeast Tiger, lacks hunting experience and its large size might not be suitable for dealing with pikas.

So the Golden Eagle accompanied Wuwu as an onlooker.

The main forces in the hunt are two Wolf Minks and the Snowy Owl.

The Snowy Owl, having substantial interaction with the Wolf Minks, stood on the treetop, playing the role of a scout with tacit understanding.

Soon, the Snowy Owl saw two pikas moving on the ground.

It emitted a cool, low call, ”Coo coo coo,” conveying information to the Wolf Minks: ”Target spotted, two, on the ground.”

Quite a distance away.

The Golden Eagle explained to Wuwu: ”The target has been spotted. The Snowy Owl will occupy the high ground, scout the situation, and when a target is found, it will inform King Kong and Hulu of the target’s position.”

Wuwu nodded, thoughtfully observing King Kong and Hulu as they began to take action.

King Kong said he wouldn’t let Hulu hunt, but actually, he still needed Hulu’s help.

The two Wolf Minks approached the foraging pikas, slowly and cautiously.

This should be the pikas’ last foraging moments.

After the arrival of winter, they will gradually reduce their activity, especially their foraging frequency.

Hence, before winter arrives, they try to store as much food as possible.

During this time, they become engrossed, making them less aware of their surroundings and unresponsive to changes in the environment.

This gave King Kong an excellent opportunity to strike!

He watched the pikas, crouched, gathering strength, and before the pikas noticed him and reacted, King Kong suddenly pounced forward.

Opposite King Kong, seeing his move, Hulu also sprang out, joining King Kong in surrounding the pikas.

Their speed was tremendous.

The pikas, upon discovering them, wanted to flee, but it was too late.

King Kong swiftly charged in front of one pika, pinning it down with a paw, while Hulu, also moving swiftly, reached out with its front paw to pin the other pika to the ground just before it entered the burrow.

Then, King Kong and Hulu extended their necks, rapidly locking their jaws onto the pikas’ necks. With their exertion, the pikas soon became motionless.

The Golden Eagle, not far away, diligently explained, ”King Kong and Hulu’s hunting method is probably the common hunting strategy used by terrestrial predators like you all. They first ambush, get as close as possible to the prey, and strike before the prey notices them.”

”With a brief pursuit, they attempt to seize control of the prey, then extend their necks and use their teeth to lock onto the prey’s throat, tearing at it. If their teeth are sharp enough, they might directly kill the prey, but most of the time, they hold the prey’s throat to suffocate it.”

Listening to the Golden Eagle’s explanation, Wuwu showed a contemplative expression.

Wuwu had only a superficial impression of hunting, relying mostly on instincts.

It could ambush but poorly, chase but quite slowly, and even try throat-locking but without understanding its significance.

But after watching a Wolf Mink hunt and listening to the Golden Eagle’s explanation.

Wuwu felt many things in its mind connecting together.

Soon, Wuwu had some ideas.

It said, ”I want to try hunting!”

Upon hearing this, the Golden Eagle tilted its head and asked, ”Are you sure?”

”Sure!”

Wuwu firmly replied, ”To survive in the wilderness, not knowing how to hunt is definitely a disservice, I need to try hunting myself!”

The Golden Eagle pondered for a moment and said, ”Then let’s use pikas as prey, try it out, I’ll help you find a target. But let’s attempt it on the other side, let’s leave this side to them, we’ll interfere with each other here.”

Wuwu agreed with a grunt.

The Golden Eagle then approached the Snowy Owl to explain the situation.

The Snowy Owl nodded, observing King Kong and Hulu on this side, while the Golden Eagle focused on Wuwu, just right.

After agreeing with the Snowy Owl, the Golden Eagle flapped its wings and began leading Wuwu to try hunting in another location.

...

A little over a kilometer away from the Snowy Owl and others.

The Golden Eagle flapped its wings and landed on a tree branch.

It surveyed the environment here; truth be told, it looked pretty good, with plenty of prey and a complex terrain suitable for Wuwu’s ambush and hunting.

The Golden Eagle was quite familiar with Wuwu’s hunting habits.

It told Wuwu to wait, while itself began flapping its wings in search of a target.

Before long, the Golden Eagle spotted the prey.

Once again, it was the pikas. However, these two pikas seemed to be lazily staying beside the rocks, perhaps enjoying their last moments on the ground for the year.

But it could also be the last moments of their lives.

The Golden Eagle, upon seeing the two pikas, gave Wuwu a signal.

Wuwu hesitated, not understanding.

The Golden Eagle, reluctantly, flew over beside Wuwu, leading it near the two pikas.

The Golden Eagle quietly advised Wuwu, ”You need to ambush close first, then charge out hunting when they’re about to notice you. Also, pay attention to their escape route, try to prevent them from rushing into their burrow!”

Listening to the Golden Eagle’s advice, Wuwu prepared to give it a go, ready for a big challenge.

But the attempt ended just as it started.

Wuwu tried to approach, but just a few steps in, the two pikas seemed to sense something and immediately retreated to their burrow.

This left Wuwu stunned.

”What happened? How did they seem to notice me even before I got close, and run right away?”

Wuwu was filled with doubt.

The Golden Eagle, hearing this, thoughtfully recalled Wuwu’s previous attempt.

Honestly, the Golden Eagle found it quite satisfactory.

Wuwu’s previous moves were textbook, very slow, its paw steps silent during the approach, practically textbook hunting.

Yet the pikas detected its move.

The Golden Eagle was genuinely puzzled by the situation.

Finally, the Golden Eagle could only say, ”Try again and ask Chen Wen when we return.”

”Alright.”

Wuwu agreed, and the two creatures resumed searching for suitable prey to start hunting.

Soon, in less than five minutes.

The Golden Eagle spotted a pika once more.

This time it still let Wuwu make the move.

Wuwu maneuvered around the pika’s line of sight, soon reaching its blind spot.

This time the pika didn’t notice Wuwu.

Wuwu began closing in.

The Golden Eagle carefully observed Wuwu’s actions, analyzing the situation for it.

As Wuwu got to around ten meters away from the pika, the pika seemed to sense something.

It paused, started craning its neck to look around.

Wuwu dared not to make a move, so it slowly prostrated itself on the ground, waiting for the pika to drop its guard.

Unexpectedly to Wuwu, this pika, after a bit of scanning, suddenly lifted its paw and ran towards the burrow.

Wuwu realized it might have been spotted, thus sprang into action, pursuing the pika at high speed.

However, having lost the initiative, Wuwu couldn’t catch up to the pika.

Before it reached the pika, the pika scurried swiftly into the burrow, escaping successfully.

Wuwu was somewhat annoyed.

It dug at the pika’s burrow vigorously, but besides digging away some soil at the entrance, Wuwu made no other progress.

The Golden Eagle flew over, confused, observing Wuwu.

It felt Wuwu’s hunting technique was correct, but it just couldn’t capture the prey.

Strange.

”Let’s go again!”

Wuwu growled softly, indicating it wanted to continue.
