Chapter 95: Chapter 6: Crafting Bone Fishhooks

Even though Chen Wen didn’t quite understand what Wang Zhi was talking about.

But after thinking for a while, he came up with a solution.

He pulled Wang Zhi aside and whispered, ”Do you remember the chicken we ate?”

”Of course.”

Wang Zhi chuckled, ”But the chicken has nothing to do with what I mentioned.”

Chen Wen slapped his thigh, ”Think about it, where did the chicken come from? Did it grow on the island?”

Wang Zhi was taken aback, ”Of course not, it was provided by the crew.”

”So, ponder this, really ponder it.”

Chen Wen raised an eyebrow and smiled, ”We don’t have this stuff, but the crew can provide it!”

Hiss!

Wang Zhi was astonished. He straightened up, ”Makes sense! But we don’t know the crew well; will they provide these things?”

”We can trade!”

Chen Wen nonchalantly said, ”It’s been twenty days now, and according to the crew’s habits, they’ll be dropping props soon. We can trade props for the enzymes you mentioned and some yeast.”

”After all, we’re not short of food. What’s wrong with trading for some stuff?”

This seemed to open a new world for Wang Zhi.

He widened his eyes and repeatedly said, ”Makes sense! Makes sense! But will the crew agree?”

Chen Wen chuckled: The crew wants to create a show effect, and brewing is definitely a show effect, right?

It’s a win-win!

Xiao Yong would definitely agree.

Chen Wen waved his hand boldly, ”It’s decided then! You take care of the cassava, and I’ll handle the enzymes!”

Wang Zhi nodded seriously upon hearing this.

But he also felt a bit odd.

Brewing wine, why does it feel like they’re counterfeiting money?

...

The conversation with Xiao Yong went smoothly.

After seeing the large traffic Chen Wen brought in, the crew generally met his requests.

Sometimes Chen Wen didn’t even need to ask; the crew would predict his needs.

Just like the antidotes they prepared in advance before.

At the same time, Chen Wen also learned from Xiao Yong that the supplies would be dropped on the twenty-second day.

The supplies included: three roosters, a piglet, and materials for brewing.

Upon hearing, Chen Wen was a bit disappointed.

He had thought the crew might provide some other livestock, like a calf.

...

On the twenty-second day of survival.

The supplies dropped by the crew were almost face-to-face.

Chen Wen, along with Wang Zhi, went to bring back the piglet and brewing materials.

The three chickens disappeared into the forest shortly after landing.

Chen Wen wasn’t in a hurry.

These chickens would eventually be found, and then they could use the blind trap to catch them back.

After obtaining the raw materials for brewing, Wang Zhi quickly invested in the third round of cassava wine brewing.

The piglet was then raised by Chen Wen.

After all, the piglet wasn’t mature yet and didn’t eat much; it was better to feed it first and eat it when food became scarce.

...

Having solved Wang Zhi’s problem.

Chen Wen then went to find Gan Tieshan.

Gan Tieshan had fairly well completed the internal work over the past period.

With abundant materials, he had made beds for everyone using wood, plastic bottles, and bamboo.

Matching pillows were also provided.

But there were things Gan Tieshan couldn’t solve.

Fishing rods.

Regarding fishing rods, everyone’s opinion was to try repairing them.

This lure rod had many achievements; the early food for the men’s group was basically supported by it.

Chen Wen also had ideas of repairing the fishing rod; if it could be fixed.

He could spend more time lying around the camp, letting Lv Guocheng handle the food and occasionally go diving for big catches.

The idea was good, but execution was difficult.

The rod wasn’t badly damaged, but the hook was completely missing.

Where Bai Yachuan lost the hook was also hard to search; the fish that cut the line might have long gone.

Therefore, repairing the rod reached an impasse.

Chen Wen sat by the campfire, taking the rod from Gan Tieshan.

”Shan, any ideas for making a hook?”

Hearing Chen Wen’s words, Gan Tieshan smiled bitterly and shook his head, ”No, there aren’t really any rivers in my area, and I rarely fish, so I don’t know much about it.”

Seeing Gan Tieshan truly had no ideas.

Chen Wen had to rely on his own conjecture.

He thought all morning, but still had no good ideas, making him a bit anxious.

He decided to take a walk around the camp to ease his mind.

When Chen Wen passed by their dumping ground, a pile of white bones caught his attention.

Bones, perhaps they could be used to make hooks!

Chen Wen’s eyes lit up, and he recalled some knowledge from the past life.

At the Dahe Village ruins in Yu Province, bone fishing hooks dating back over six thousand years had been unearthed.

These are the oldest fishing artifacts currently existing in Hua Country.

Chen Wen had seen those bone hooks.

The hooks weren’t particularly sharp; some had tiny barbs, and some even lacked barbs.

At that time, Chen Wen was puzzled. How could they catch fish without barbs?

A friend told Chen Wen that bone hooks worked differently from the current hooks.

They didn’t actually hook onto the fish; instead, the fish would swallow the bait and the hook, and you’d lift it when it choked on the throat.

Bone hooks rarely penetrate into the fish’s flesh.

Chen Wen had a taste of ancient wisdom.

The stone spears and axes he made already proved that what the ancestors passed down was valuable.

Now it was the bone hook’s turn to demonstrate its worth.

Chen Wen squatted down and began selecting suitable bones.

At this moment, Gan Tieshan noticed Chen Wen’s odd behavior in the camp.

He walked over and saw Chen Wen picking through the trash, ”What are you doing?”

”Treasure hunting in the trash.”

Chen Wen replied without raising his head.

Hearing this, Gan Tieshan paused, ”Treasure? What good stuff could be in there? If you need something, I’ll make it for you.”

”Hook.”

Hearing these two words, Gan Tieshan fell silent.

He stood aside, thinking for a moment, and asked, ”You plan to make hooks from bones?”

”Bingo! Correct!”

Chen Wen said as he picked up a chicken bone.

It seemed to be a wishbone, and when Chen Wen tested its hardness, it was quite suitable.

”Let me help you.”

Gan Tieshan squatted beside Chen Wen and asked, ”What kind of bone should I look for?”

”This kind, the harder the better.”

Chen Wen held up the bone in his hand and smiled, ”Hardness above all, the harder, the better!”

”Okay.”

With Gan Tieshan and Chen Wen’s continuous searching, they soon found about ten bones suitable for turning into hooks.

Chen Wen took these bones to the seaside, cleaned them, and removed any remaining flesh.

Afterward, he returned to the campfire with the clean bones.

Under the intrigued observation of the internal crew, he started making bone hooks.

The process was simple yet lengthy.

Chen Wen divided the bones into two parts.

He planned to grind the small bones directly into hook shapes, while he would choose the best part of the larger bones and cut out a hook with a knife.

For the small bones.

Chen Wen found a stone, placed sand on it, and poured water over it.

Then began grinding.

In the friction, the small bones gradually became sharp, and the shape of the hook began to emerge.

”This... is quite interesting!”

Du Feng was surprised, ”Dig a small hole with a knife at this end, and it becomes a complete fish hook!”

Gan Tieshan nodded slightly, having understood Chen Wen’s approach.

Seeing Chen Wen finish the first hook.

He joined the hook-making efforts.

After collecting some firewood around the camp, Bai Yachuan also started making amends and joined in production.

Seeing the three of them working, Du Feng felt he couldn’t stand idly by.

Reluctantly, Du Feng also joined the hook-grinding camp.
