the Villainess they took for granted

Eight days later, Marian returned to society.

The eight days had been quiet.

She had gone shopping with Clara one afternoon, visited friends another, and spent several evenings at home with a romance novel open in her lap.

She had not written to Adrian.

She had not asked about him.

She had simply allowed herself to breathe.

And somewhere in those quiet days, she had made her decision.

She still loved him.

That was the part she could not change.

But she had done enough.

If Adrian intended to keep testing her, she would no longer spend herself trying to pass.

She could build a life without him.

It would hurt.

Perhaps for a long time.

But she had survived losing Cassian.

She could survive this too.

So tonight, Marian would look forward.

She would enjoy the evening.

And she would not seek Adrian out.

--

The Emperor was impossible to miss.

Marian noticed him the moment she entered.

She couldn’t have avoided it.

The space around Adrian seemed to arrange itself naturally. Ministers gathered near him. Nobles waited for openings to approach. Servants moved more carefully in his vicinity. Even the conversations nearest him seemed to lower in volume whenever he turned his head.

She saw him.

Her heart reacted before her mind could stop it.

She looked away.

Across the ballroom, Adrian saw her.

For eight days, he had been waiting to see her again.

Eight days since she had walked away from him.

Eight days since his aide had returned alone and told him that Marian had refused to come back.

He had spent those days thinking.

And he had reached his decision.

He would marry her.

He had spent enough time wondering whether Marian had returned for Adrian or for the Emperor.

Perhaps she loved the man he had become.

Perhaps she loved the position he held.

Perhaps the two had become impossible to separate in her mind.

It no longer mattered.

He had decided that he wanted her bound to him first.

Once she was his wife, he would have a lifetime to know what she truly felt.

He could afford to wait for the answer then.

Adrian’s gaze remained on her.

She looked beautiful.

But what caught his attention was the way she refused to look at him.

He waited.

Surely she would.

She always did.

Even when she was angry.

Even when she was hurt.

Eventually, Marian’s eyes would have found him.

That was what he expected.

Instead, she turned toward Clara.

She laughed at something her friend said.

Then she moved deeper into the ballroom without once looking back.

Adrian’s expression remained still.

He watched her.

He had expected her to approach him.

He had expected her to come back after those eight days.

Instead, she seemed determined to pretend he wasn’t there.

Interesting.

He did not follow.

Not yet.

He simply watched.

--

”You’re staring at me.”

Clara’s voice brought Marian back.

She turned.

”I’m making certain you’re behaving.”

”How reassuring.”

Clara laughed.

Marian smiled.

She let herself be drawn into conversation.

Someone asked about her absence.

Someone else complimented her dress.

She answered easily.

She laughed when something amused her.

And slowly, the ballroom began to feel familiar again.

She did not look toward Adrian.

Not even when she knew, somewhere behind her, that he was there.

She wouldn’t.

She had made her decision.

If he wanted another woman, he was free to have one.

He was the Emperor.

There would always be women around him.

Beautiful women.

Powerful families.

Young ladies hoping to catch his attention.

There was no reason to spend the rest of her life wondering whether she would be the one he chose to notice.

She had returned to the capital to find a husband.

She needed a practical marriage.

A stable future.

A man who would choose her without requiring her to prove herself over and over again.

Perhaps it did not have to be Adrian.

The thought still hurt.

But it no longer felt impossible.

Her gaze drifted toward Clara.

”Your brother is here tonight, isn’t he?”

Clara’s brows lifted.

”Julian?”

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Marian reached into her reticule.

”I have something to return to him.”

She drew out the folded handkerchief.

She had carried it with her all week.

Clara looked at it.

”You still had that?”

”I kept forgetting to return it.”

That was only partly true.

Marian had simply never found the right moment.

Tonight, she would.

--

They found Julian near one of the tall windows, speaking with another gentleman.

When he saw Marian approaching, his expression changed.

He excused himself and turned toward her.

”Lady Marian.”

”Lord Julian.”

Marian held out the handkerchief.

”I believe this is yours.”

Julian looked down at it.

Then back at her.

”You kept it.”

Marian’s lips curved.

”I was rather distracted that evening.”

Something softened in his expression.

”I understand.”

She placed the handkerchief in his palm.

Their fingers brushed.

A tiny thing.

Nothing more.

Yet Marian felt strangely relieved.

It was an ordinary interaction.

Simple.

Uncomplicated.

Perhaps that was what she needed.

Something that didn’t require her to decipher every glance.

Something that didn’t leave her wondering whether she had passed or failed.

Julian tucked the handkerchief away.

Then the musicians began tuning their instruments.

He glanced toward the dance floor.

Then back at Marian.

”Would you care to dance?”

Marian hesitated.

Only for a heartbeat.

She wasn’t accepting because she wanted Adrian to see.

She wasn’t trying to make anyone jealous.

She had simply decided that if she was going to move forward, she had to actually move.

Julian was a good man.

Kind.

Well regarded.

His family was respectable.

He was wealthy enough to provide the stable future she needed.

And he had never made her wonder whether she was wanted.

Perhaps that was enough.

Marian smiled.

”I’d like that.”

Julian offered his hand.

She placed hers in it.

His fingers closed gently around hers.

Together, they stepped onto the dance floor.

--

Across the ballroom, Adrian saw them.

His gaze settled on Julian.

Then Marian.

Then the handkerchief Julian had just slipped into his coat.

His face revealed nothing.

But he stopped listening to the minister beside him.

Julian led Marian into the first turn.

Adrian watched.

The first step.

Julian’s hand settled lightly at Marian’s waist.

Marian smiled.

Adrian’s gaze did not move.

The second step.

They turned with the other couples.

Marian’s skirts swept across the polished floor.

She looked—

happy.

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

It was only a dance.

Nothing more.

He could tolerate a dance.

The third step.

Julian said something.

Marian laughed.

Adrian’s fingers curled slowly against his palm.

He could tolerate her speaking to another man.

He could tolerate her smiling.

He could tolerate—

Julian’s hand shifted as they turned.

Marian looked up at him.

Adrian’s breathing slowed.

The music continued.

Another turn.

Another step.

Marian laughed again.

Something inside him gave way.

His hand rose.

The musicians saw him.

The music stopped.

Not gradually.

All at once.

The final note vanished into the enormous silence.

Every dancer froze.

Every conversation died.

One by one, faces turned toward the Emperor.
