Chapter 24: Chapter 24: The Man She Never Saw

”Marian.”

She kept walking.

The terrace doors opened before her, and cool night air rushed against her flushed skin.

Behind her, music continued.

Laughter continued.

The gala continued.

As though nothing had happened.

As though her heart had not just been stepped on in the middle of a ballroom.

”Marian.”

Adrian’s footsteps followed.

Fast.

Urgent.

For once.

How ironic.

She stopped at the stone balustrade overlooking the palace gardens.

Moonlight spilled across the marble pathways below.

Silver.

Cold.

Beautiful.

Marian gripped the railing tightly.

Not because she was afraid of falling.

Because she was afraid of turning around.

Afraid that if she looked at him right now, she would either cry or scream.

Possibly both.

A moment later, Adrian reached her.

”Please.”

His voice sounded strained.

”Please listen to me.”

Marian laughed.

A short sound.

Sharp enough to cut.

”You know what’s funny?”

Adrian closed his eyes briefly.

Never a good sign.

”I have listened.”

The words came quietly.

Far more quietly than shouting.

”I’ve listened for months.”

Silence.

”It wasn’t what it looked like.”

There it was.

That sentence.

That horrible sentence.

The sentence every guilty man in every story somehow managed to say.

Marian smiled.

Not because she was happy.

Because she wasn’t.

Not even remotely.

”Then tell me.”

Her voice remained perfectly calm.

”Tell me what it looked like.”

Adrian opened his mouth.

Then closed it.

Then opened it again.

Nothing came out.

Exactly.

Before either of them could continue, hurried footsteps approached.

A palace aide.

Young.

Terrified.

Unfortunately for him, Marian understood immediately what was about to happen.

”Your Highness.”

The aide bowed.

”The Emperor requests your presence.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

”Now?”

”Immediately.”

Silence settled across the terrace.

Heavy.

Predictable.

Marian almost laughed.

Of course.

What else had she expected?

”Give me five minutes.”

Adrian didn’t look away from her.

Not once.

For a brief, pathetic moment, hope stirred.

Then the aide spoke again.

”The foreign delegation from the Southern Kingdom has arrived.”

The hope died instantly.

Marian watched it happen.

Watched the conflict cross Adrian’s face.

Watched duty and desire wage war.

Watched duty win.

Again.

Always duty.

Always responsibility.

Always everyone else.

”I’m sorry.”

The apology sounded genuine.

That was the problem.

It always sounded genuine.

Marian looked away.

Toward the gardens.

Toward the moonlight.

Toward anything except him.

”Of course you are.”

The words landed harder than she intended.

Or perhaps exactly as hard.

”Marian—”

”Go.”

He hesitated.

Actually hesitated.

Which might have meant something months ago.

Now it just hurt.

Eventually, Adrian left.

The sound of his footsteps faded into the distance.

Then disappeared completely.

Marian remained where she was.

Staring into the darkness.

Of course.

The thought echoed through her mind.

Of course.

What had she expected?

What exactly had she been hoping for?

That tonight would be different?

That Adrian would finally choose her?

That eighteen years would somehow outweigh the habits of the last several months?

A bitter breath escaped her.

Not quite a laugh.

Not quite a sigh.

Something in between.

Then she felt it.

A gaze.

Marian froze.

Because suddenly she remembered.

The ballroom.

The gray eyes watching from across the crowd.

The silent acknowledgment.

Slowly, she turned.

Cassian Ashford stood near one of the marble columns.

Exactly where he’d been before.

As though he had never moved.

As though he had witnessed everything.

Which, judging by the look on his face—

he probably had.

Wonderful.

Absolutely wonderful.

The humiliation hit all over again.

Because of all the people in the Empire—

why him?

Why did it have to be him?

Marian immediately looked away.

Toward the gardens.

Then toward the ballroom.

Then back toward the gardens.

Anywhere except Cassian Ashford.

An absurd thought surfaced.

The same thought she’d had earlier.

Back in the ballroom.

The one she’d immediately dismissed.

If Adrian insists on making me feel invisible, perhaps it’s time he learned how that feels.

Marian mentally smacked herself.

Absolutely not.

Ridiculous.

Petty.

Immature.

She was not actually considering using Adrian’s cousin to make him jealous.

She had at least some dignity remaining.

The silence stretched.

Long.

Awkward.

Strange.

Neither moved.

Neither spoke.

Marian became increasingly aware of the fact that she was standing beside a very handsome man while emotionally imploding.

A deeply unfortunate combination.

Finally—

Cassian spoke.

”You know... You have every right to be angry.”

Marian froze.

Not because the words were profound.

Because they were simple.

Painfully simple.

No excuses.

No explanations.

No defense of Adrian.

No discussion of duty.

No discussion of responsibility.

Just that.

You have every right.

Something tightened unexpectedly in her chest.

Because nobody had said that.

Not once.

Everyone understood Adrian.

Everyone defended Adrian.

Everyone excused Adrian.

Even she did.

Nobody defended her.

For a moment, Marian couldn’t speak.

Then:

”Thank you.”

The words came out softer than she intended.

More sincere.

More vulnerable.

Cassian simply nodded.

As though her gratitude wasn’t necessary.

As though he had merely stated a fact.

And somehow that made her want to laugh.

”I must look ridiculous.”

”No.”

The answer came immediately.

Certain.

Marian glanced toward him.

”You look angry.”

A pause.

Then:

”There’s a difference.”

To her horror, a laugh escaped.

A real one.

The first real laugh she’d managed all evening.

Something flickered across Cassian’s face.

Briefly.

Gone before she could identify it.

Embarrassed by her own reaction, Marian turned away too quickly.

Her heel caught against uneven stone.

The world tilted.

”Oh—”

Strong arms caught her instantly.

One hand at her waist.

The other around her forearm.

Firm.

Steady.

Certain.

Everything stopped.

For one impossible heartbeat, the entire world vanished.

The ballroom.

The music.

The humiliation.

The arguments.

The whispers.

Even Adrian.

Gone.

Marian’s breath caught.

Because suddenly Cassian Ashford was standing very close.

Far too close.

And for the first time in her life—

she saw him.

Not Adrian’s cousin.

Not the empire’s favorite rake.

Not the handsome duke mothers pushed their daughters toward.

Him.

Gray eyes.

Not silver.

Gray.

Darker than she’d imagined.

How strange.

She had looked at Cassian Ashford countless times.

Everyone had.

He was difficult not to notice.

At banquets.

At court.

At hunting parties.

Across crowded ballrooms.

Standing beside Adrian.

Laughing with nobles.

Surrounded by admirers.

She had looked at him for years.

Yet standing beneath the moonlight, Marian realized something startling.

She had never truly seen him.

Not as a man.

Not as himself.

Only as Adrian’s cousin.

A familiar face moving through the background of her life.

Nothing more.

Until now.

Their eyes met.

Something shifted.

Tiny.

Dangerous.

Impossible to name.

For one reckless moment, Marian forgot herself.

Forgot pride.

Forgot caution.

Forgot everything except the man holding her.

And Cassian saw it.

Immediately.

Cassian knew women.

Not in the arrogant way gossip suggested.

Simply from experience.

He knew the difference between being seen and being looked at.

And Marian Valmont had never looked at him this way before.

Not once.

Not because she disliked him.

Not because she ignored him.

Because her gaze had always belonged somewhere else.

Always.

For years, Cassian had accepted that fact without ever examining it.

Without ever questioning it.

Without ever caring.

Tonight, for one brief heartbeat—

it didn’t.

And to his irritation, he discovered he liked that far more than he should.

The realization unsettled him immediately.

Slowly, Marian stepped back.

Breaking the contact.

Breaking the moment.

Cold air rushed between them.

Necessary.

Welcome.

”Thank you.”

Her voice sounded different now.

Softer.

Uncertain.

Cassian inclined his head.

”You’re welcome.”

Neither spoke after that.

Because neither quite knew what to say.

And because both of them felt it.

The strange shift in the air.

The awareness.

The beginning of something neither had intended.

As Marian stared out over the moonlit gardens, the absurd thought returned.

The same thought she’d dismissed earlier.

If Adrian insists on making me feel invisible, perhaps it’s time he learned how that feels.

Marian almost laughed.

Because standing beneath the moonlight—

with Cassian Ashford looking at her in a way no man ever had before—

the thought no longer seemed quite so absurd.

Which was exactly why it frightened her.
