The Hockey Playing Alpha and His Human Ice Princess

POV: Georgia

I lay every piece I have out on my bed like evidence at a trial, because it is one.

It’s late, past curfew, the kind of silence that presses against the windows like something with weight. Mandi is asleep on her side of the room, her breathing slow and even behind her curtain of hair, one arm flung over her pillow, utterly unaware of the storm building three feet away from her. I’ve been staring at the ceiling for an hour, counting the water stains I’ve memorized a hundred times over, thinking about my dad’s car disappearing down the road, thinking about the word he left hanging in the air between us. *Whatever’s going on here.* He knew something. He had to. Finally, I give up on sleep entirely and throw back the blanket.

I pull the folder out from under my mattress - the one I started after the twins leaked my notes - and do something I haven’t let myself do yet. I take it apart.

I sit cross-legged on top of my comforter, my bad leg stretched out carefully in front of me, wincing when the knee protests the angle, and I start laying each reconstructed page flat on the blanket around me, one at a time. My fingers move slowly at first, almost reverent, like I’m handling something that might combust if I rush. I’ve never done this before. I’ve always kept the notebook as one long, unbroken record, page after page, each strange thing filed away and then buried under the next one, safer that way, contained. Tonight I want to see it all at once, laid bare, with nowhere left to hide.

The equipment report goes first, the printed pages I copied by hand, the line about the blade mount’s irregular wear circled so many times the pen has worn a groove into the paper. My thumb brushes over the indentation without meaning to.

Next to it, the technician. I lay down the page where I wrote what he told me on the phone, and under it, the page where I wrote the number that stopped working after four tries, the dead tone that still echoes sometimes when I close my eyes.

I place Bella’s page beside those. *Common room. Amber flash, unmistakable. Teacup shaking. She ran.*

Then Bianca’s. *Mailroom. Hands curling like claws. Canines sharp.* ”You don’t know what you’re talking about,” she’d hissed, voice low and venomous, the words scraping out of her like something feral trying to stay polite.

I lay down the article about Dominic Valentine, the screenshot from that first sleepless night, the words *unusual aggression inconsistent with his playing style* circled just as hard as the blade mount, ink bleeding faintly through to the other side of the page.

Beside it, Darcy’s page. The dinner where his eyes went cold and flat for one second at the sound of his own brother’s name. The dining hall where the hunger showed through his smile for three full seconds before it vanished, folded neatly back into charm like he’d rehearsed the transition a thousand times. *You look tired,* written twice, once from weeks ago in casual, careless handwriting, and once from days ago in letters pressed so hard they nearly tore through the page. Two versions of the same four words, and somehow they sound nothing alike anymore.

I keep going. I lay down the page about the wolf in the clearing, the flat worn stone, the claw marks scored deep into it like something had raked its fury into the rock itself. The massive dark shape at the treeline with gold eyes that felt achingly familiar, eyes that found mine across all that distance and held on. I lay down the page where I wrote *Puck?* in shaking letters, and beside it, how its ears had flicked at the sound of that single, impossible word.

I add the pages about Puck himself. The hit into the boards that should have ended his night and didn’t. The pen snapping in his fist like a twig. Handprints bent into steel, curled deep enough to hold their shape. His skin, burning like a coal held too long in my palm, the memory of it still living somewhere under my own skin.

Last, I lay down the pages about the patterns. The nights the whole campus goes quiet, hushed in a way that never felt natural. The howling everyone calls coyotes, always explained away too quickly, too smoothly. The dozens of figures moving toward the forest without a sound, like the ground itself had agreed to keep their secret. I flip back through my notebook until I find the page where I first started marking dates against a lunar calendar, weeks ago, half convinced I was imagining the whole thing, half hoping I was.

I line the dates up along the edge of my comforter, one after another. Every single one of them falls on or near a full moon.

I sit back and look at what I’ve built.

It covers almost the whole bed. Torn pages overlapping torn pages, my own handwriting crossing itself in a dozen different inks, some pressed so hard into the paper that I can feel the ridges of the letters if I run my thumb over the back, like braille spelling out something I was never supposed to read. For weeks I’ve been collecting these one at a time, writing each one down and closing the notebook and telling myself I’d figure it out later, always later, never now. I never let myself look at all of it together. Some part of me always knew what would happen if I did.

I make myself look now.

I start at one corner and let my eyes move slowly across the whole bed, piece by piece, the way you’d study a photograph looking for something hidden in the background, something you already suspect is there. The equipment report connects to the twins, because Bianca’s fear proves someone wanted my fall to look like an accident. The twins connect to Darcy, because they move the same way he does, too smooth, too controlled, too fast for anything human. Darcy connects to Dominic, and Dominic connects to Puck, and Puck connects to the wolf in the clearing, and the wolf connects to every full moon night the whole campus goes silent and thirty pairs of feet move through the dark without making a sound.

None of it is separate. It never was. I built two columns in my mind because I thought I was investigating two different mysteries - a person who hurt me and a place that doesn’t make sense. But there was only ever one mystery. The sabotage wasn’t human cruelty. It was pack enforcement. And tonight, laid out flat across my bed, it finally looks like exactly what it is.

I don’t want to say the word. I haven’t let myself say it, not even in my head, not even after the clearing, not even after Bella’s eyes or Bianca’s teeth. I’ve circled around it for weeks the way you circle around a name you’re afraid will curse you the moment you speak it aloud.

But sitting here, surrounded by every piece of proof I’ve gathered since the day I arrived, I can’t make myself look away from it anymore.

The picture that comes together is impossible. It shouldn’t exist. Skin that burns and heals in seconds, eyes that flash gold and amber, claws where fingers should be, a massive wolf with a gaze I recognized before I understood why. None of it should be true, not in a world I understand, not in any world I thought I lived in, not in the world my father drove away from tonight without knowing what he was leaving me inside of.

And it’s completely coherent. That’s the part that scares me most. Every piece fits, clean and exact, like a lock finally finding its key. Nothing is left over. Nothing contradicts anything else. It isn’t a pile of strange coincidences anymore. It’s a picture, whole and finished, and it has been sitting right in front of me the entire time, waiting patiently for me to stop looking away.

I sit back against my headboard, careful not to disturb any of the pages spread around me, and my hands are shaking so badly I have to press them flat against my knees to stop it.

I don’t move. I don’t reach for the notebook again. I don’t turn off the light.

I just sit there, surrounded by everything I know, and I don’t move for a long, long time.
