Transmigrating Into a Book, the Villain Becomes the White Moonlight!

161: Chapter 161 The Daily Life of the ThreeLin Wan picked up the coat draped over the sofa and followed her out the door.

The two walked into the courtyard; one went left, the other went right. Mu Xue’s car was parked on the left, and Lin Wan’s was on the right.

As Mu Xue opened her car door, she suddenly heard Lin Wan’s voice from behind.

”Are you coming back for dinner tonight?”

Mu Xue turned around and saw Lin Wan standing by her black sedan, car keys in hand, looking at her.

”I don’t know,” Mu Xue said. ”It depends.”

Lin Wan nodded, opened the car door, and got in.

Mu Xue also got into her car.

The two cars drove out of the courtyard one after the other, one turning left and the other right, disappearing into the afternoon sunlight.

The villa fell silent.

Only the sunlight moved, shifting from the osmanthus tree in the courtyard to the steps, then from the steps to the porch, bit by bit, unhurriedly.

Upstairs, Su Bai was lying on the bed, already asleep.

The curtains weren’t fully closed, and a thin beam of light leaked through the gap, falling brightly onto the quilt.

It was very quiet upstairs.

Su Bai lay on the bed, breathing evenly, sleeping deeply. Through the gap in the curtains, the sunlight moved slowly from the quilt to the pillow, then to the floor, bit by bit, unhurriedly.

There was no sound downstairs either.

The refrigerator hummed, occasionally stopping before starting up again. The shadow of the osmanthus tree in the courtyard shifted past the porch; its leaves rustled softly in the wind for a few moments before falling still again.

After an unknown amount of time, the sunlight completely vanished from the floor. The light outside dimmed, and the room darkened with it; the outlines of the furniture grew blurred, as if submerged underwater.

The person on the bed rolled over, buried his face in the pillow, and fell back asleep.

Outside the courtyard, a car or two occasionally drove by, the sound distant and quickly muffled by the walls. Further away, someone’s dog barked twice and then went quiet.

When darkness fell, Su Bai woke up.

He opened his eyes; the room was pitch black, and he couldn’t see a thing. After lying there for a while, he slowly adjusted to the faint light—the glow from a streetlamp filtering through the curtains, casting a blurry grayish-white light onto the ceiling.

He fished out his phone and took a look.

7:40.

He had slept for over four hours.

The screen’s light was a bit piercing. He squinted as he checked his messages—no missed calls, no new messages. Neither Mu Xue nor Lin Wan had looked for him.

He put the phone down and continued to lie there.

He was a bit hungry but didn’t feel like moving.

After a while, he suddenly heard a sound from downstairs.

It was very faint, like a door being pushed open. Then came footsteps, one after another, echoing in the living room.

Someone was back.

Su Bai didn’t move; he just lay there, listening to the footsteps go from the living room to the kitchen, followed by the sound of the refrigerator door opening, a glass being placed on the counter, and the faucet running.

The sound of someone drinking water.

After drinking, the footsteps moved toward the stairs.

Halfway up, they stopped.

Then the footsteps started again, not going up, but down—the person was going back downstairs.

A moment later, the sound of the television came from downstairs, very low, as if afraid of disturbing someone.

Su Bai stared at the ceiling for a while, rolled over, and closed his eyes.

The sound of the TV continued downstairs, with faint dialogue muffled by the floorboards; he couldn’t make out what was being said.

The sound wasn’t loud—just enough to be heard without being noisy.

He lay there, listening to the faint sounds, as his consciousness slowly drifted off again.

The morning light squeezed through the gap in the curtains and fell onto the floor, creeping forward bit by bit.

When Su Bai opened his eyes, he happened to see the light hitting the foot of the bed. He lay still, staring at the ceiling for a long time, his mind a complete blank.

He had slept okay last night.

He rolled over, grabbed his phone, and checked the time—8:40. No messages, no calls.

There was movement downstairs.

He listened for a while; there were sounds from the kitchen—the light clinking of dishes and the sound of running water. There was more than one person.

After washing up and heading downstairs, there were already people sitting at the dining table.

Lin Wan was in loungewear, her hair unstyled and draped loosely. A half-finished glass of milk sat before her, and she was looking at something on her phone. Hearing footsteps, she glanced up at him before returning her gaze to her phone.

”Up?”

”Yeah.”

Su Bai sat down at the table. In the kitchen, Mu Xue was plating fried eggs and brought them over, placing them in front of him. Then came porridge, a few small side dishes, and a pair of chopsticks.

”Eat,” she said.

Su Bai picked up his chopsticks and took a couple of bites, noticing Lin Wan was still on her phone.

”Aren’t you eating?”

”Already ate,” Lin Wan replied without looking up.

Mu Xue sat opposite her, holding her own bowl of porridge and sipping slowly. Sunlight streamed through the window onto the table, making the rim of the bowl gleam.

The three of them just sat there, no one speaking.

As Su Bai chewed his fried egg, he glanced at the two women across from him. Lin Wan was on her phone, Mu Xue was eating porridge; their eyes met occasionally before they both looked away.

He hadn’t seen this scene before.

When these two were together, eight times out of ten there were undercurrents. Even if they weren’t speaking, that tension was there. Today was different; one was on her phone, the other was eating porridge, each doing her own thing and ignoring the other.

As he chewed, he suddenly felt like laughing.

”What are you laughing at?” Mu Xue asked.

”Nothing.”

Lin Wan glanced up at him, said nothing, and went back to her phone.

After breakfast, Mu Xue cleared the dishes and went into the kitchen. Su Bai leaned back against the chair; the sunlight felt warm on him.

Lin Wan put down her phone and looked at him.

”What are you doing today?”

”I don’t know,” Su Bai said. ”I haven’t decided.”

Lin Wan nodded, stood up, and headed upstairs. At the base of the stairs, she paused and looked back at him.

”What do you want for lunch?”

Su Bai was stunned for a moment.

”Whatever.”

Lin Wan said nothing and went upstairs.

The sound of water was still running in the kitchen. Su Bai sat there, watching the sunlight move slowly across the floor, motionless.

At noon, the dining table was indeed quite lavish.

Su Bai didn’t know when Lin Wan had gone out or when she had returned. Regardless, when they sat down at twelve, there were four dishes and a soup on the table. Each looked like it had been ordered from a restaurant—but judging by the plating and the cooking, they also seemed homemade.

He looked at Lin Wan, then at Mu Xue.

”Who made this?”

Lin Wan picked up her chopsticks and didn’t answer. Mu Xue served him a bowl of soup, placed it by his hand, and didn’t answer either.

Su Bai lowered his head and ate.

After eating, Mu Xue took a call and changed her clothes to go out. She said there was something at the school and she might not be back for dinner. Lin Wan also went upstairs to change, saying she needed to go to the company.

Su Bai sat alone in the living room; the sunlight had warmed the entire sofa.

He leaned back with his eyes closed, his mind a mess.

Ran Shu was still locked in the Club’s basement. Uncle Fu was still investigating the Dragon King Hall’s background. Brother Bufan was hiding in that abandoned factory in the suburbs, his face still twitching, unsure when he would recover or when he would make a comeback.

And those two women from the System Administration Bureau—Xiao You and Liu Ruyan—who knew how they were gossiping about him behind his back.

He opened his eyes and stared at the ceiling.

Actually, he knew what choice he should make.

Kill Brother Bufan and be done with it. The Dragon King Hall would be leaderless, and Ran Shu would have nowhere to go; whether he released her or kept her, it would be easy to handle. He didn’t know if the world would be reclaimed, but at least this hurdle would be cleared.

But he just hadn’t made a move.

It wasn’t that he was afraid he couldn’t win.

It was that he feared once this battle was over, the days that followed would no longer belong to him.

During the last transmigration, he had completed his mission perfectly and received every single reward from the system. What was the ending? His girlfriend died, the world was reclaimed, and he was left standing alone in a void, like being thrown into a box with no exit.

He didn’t want that this time.

This time he wanted to live, to live together with those who wanted to live.

But why the hell was it so difficult?

The afternoon sunlight slowly slanted westward, moving from the sofa to the floor, then from the floor to the wall, before finally disappearing completely.

When darkness fell, Su Bai was still sitting there, motionless.

The sound of a car came from outside.

Then came the sound of the door being pushed open, shoes being changed, and footsteps heading toward the living room.

”Why aren’t the lights on?”

It was Mu Xue’s voice.

Su Bai blinked, only then realizing the house was pitch black.

”Forgot.”

The lights came on.

Mu Xue stood at the door holding a bag. She glanced at him, asked nothing, and walked toward the kitchen.

”Have you eaten?”

”No.”

She put the bag in the kitchen. When she came out, Lin Wan had also returned. One went to the kitchen to heat up food, while the other went upstairs to change; each did her own thing, and neither said much.

Su Bai sat on the sofa, watching the two figures move about the house. The kitchen light was on, the range hood hummed, and an occasional low conversation drifted out, though he couldn’t hear what was being said.

He suddenly stood up and walked into the kitchen.

Mu Xue was stir-frying, and Lin Wan was nearby chopping ingredients. Both stopped simultaneously and turned to look at him.

”What is it?” Mu Xue asked.

Su Bai looked at them, opened his mouth, and finally said:

”Hungry.”

Mu Xue was stunned for a moment, then rolled her eyes and went back to cooking.

As Lin Wan chopped, the corner of her mouth twitched, but she said nothing.

Su Bai leaned against the kitchen doorway; the smell of cooking fumes hit him, making him want to sneeze.

He didn’t move away; he just stood there, watching the food tossing in the pan, watching the backs of the two women, and watching the two beams of light on the floor.

After dinner, the three of them sat in the living room.

The TV was on with the volume low, though no one was watching. Mu Xue was on her phone, Lin Wan was flipping through a book, and Su Bai leaned back on the sofa, staring blankly at the flickering images on the screen.

After an unknown amount of time, Mu Xue suddenly spoke.

”What’s wrong today?”

Su Bai turned his head to look at her.

”What do you mean, what’s wrong?”

”You’re off today.” Mu Xue put down her phone and looked at him. ”You’ve been off since this morning.”

Lin Wan also looked up, her gaze falling on his face.

Su Bai was silent for a few seconds.

”It’s nothing,” he said. ”Just a bit tired.”

Mu Xue looked at him and said nothing.

Lin Wan closed her book and rested it on her lap.

”If you don’t want to say, then don’t,” she said. ”But don’t carry it all by yourself.”

Su Bai was taken aback.

He looked at these two women—one sitting at one end of the sofa, the other at the other end, separated by the distance of one person, yet both their gazes were fixed solely on him.

The house was very quiet; the sound from the TV was so low it was almost inaudible. Only the wind outside blew through the osmanthus tree, its leaves rustling softly.

Su Bai suddenly felt his throat go dry.

”It’s really nothing,” he said. ”It’s just...”

He paused.

”It’s just that there’s something I haven’t decided how to handle yet.”

Mu Xue waited.

Lin Wan also waited.

Su Bai looked at them, suddenly unsure how to explain. Talk about Brother Bufan? Dragon King Hall? Ran Shu? The System Administration Bureau? That his girlfriend died in the last transmigration?

It was too long.

He hadn’t even sorted it out himself.

”Take your time,” Mu Xue said. ”Tell us when you’ve figured it out.”

Lin Wan nodded, picked up her book, and continued flipping through it.

Su Bai leaned back on the sofa and looked at the ceiling.

The low hum of the TV continued. A car occasionally drove by outside, and a few barks came from a dog somewhere in the distance. The two gazes had been withdrawn; one was back on her phone, the other back to her book. Neither pressed him further.

He just lay there, listening to those sounds, bit by bit pushing down the chaotic thoughts in his head.

After an unknown amount of time, he suddenly spoke.

”I’ll tell you once I’ve decided.”

Neither of them looked up, but Su Bai knew they had heard him.

Mu Xue glanced at him before looking away again.

Lin Wan turned a page; the sound of the paper was quite loud in the quiet living room.

”He went to the Club,” Lin Wan suddenly said, her voice very soft.

Mu Xue looked at her.

”I know.”

”Do you know what he went there to do?”

Mu Xue didn’t answer.

Lin Wan closed the book and rested it on her lap, looking at the blurry light outside the window.

”I didn’t ask,” she said.

”I didn’t ask either.”

The two were silent for a few seconds.

”If he doesn’t say, he has his reasons,” Mu Xue said.

Lin Wan nodded.

The wind outside blew through the osmanthus tree, its leaves rustling softly. The sound was faint, like someone whispering in the distance.

Mu Xue stood up, walked to the sofa, bent down to pick up the blanket that had slipped onto the floor, and covered Su Bai with it. Su Bai shifted, rolled over to face inward, and continued sleeping.

Mu Xue stood there looking at him for two seconds, then turned and headed upstairs.

At the base of the stairs, she paused and looked back at Lin Wan.

”Aren’t you sleeping?”

”I’ll sit for a bit longer.”

Mu Xue said no more and went upstairs.

Lin Wan sat alone in the living room, the book on her lap unopened. She looked at Su Bai on the sofa for a long time.

The light from the streetlamp fell on him, making his outline blurry.

She remembered the first time she met him. At that time, the engagement had just been settled. She hadn’t expected much from this fiancé, thinking he was probably just a typical rich second-generation heir, living for pleasure and lacking any real skill. Later, after more contact, she realized he wasn’t like that.

He wasn’t like that, but she couldn’t quite say what he was like.

He was lazy and shiftless, not taking anything to heart. Yet, he never made a mistake in important matters. He seemed indifferent to everything, but he never neglected a single person around him.

Lin Wan watched him for a while, then stood up, placed the book on the coffee table, and also went upstairs.
