Hijacking the Timeline

Sitting motionless in the sealed cell, his vision consumed by darkness.

Tomorrow, he would face the execution ground.

Feng Qi found himself remarkably calm, neither joyful nor sorrowful.

The taut string in his mind finally found respite in this moment.

Suddenly, the lights flickered on. The prison supervisor, accompanied by a graceful figure, approached the specially reinforced glass window of the cell.

”Director Wei, this is Feng Qi,” the supervisor said respectfully, introducing him to Wei Wei.

”Even the United Military Department’s interrogations proved ineffective?”

”We tried everything. His life force has been depleted, and he can’t withstand further torture. The higher-ups have given up on interrogation and decided to execute him tomorrow via live broadcast to appease the public.”

”The Scarlet Research Institute has reserved his remains. We might uncover secrets from his body.”

”Your request has been submitted to the higher authorities. Approval should come soon,” the supervisor replied promptly.

”Can I examine his wounds? They appear to be the result of biochemical modification. Perhaps I can find a way to make him talk.”

”This... I can only give you half an hour. He’s too important to die.”

”Then half an hour it is. I’ll take responsibility if he dies. Open the door,” Wei Wei said immediately.

The guard, hearing this, immediately pressed a switch on his portable device. The iron door on the side slowly began to open.

”Director Wei, please examine him carefully inside. As long as he doesn’t die, you can do whatever you need. Let me know if you need anything else.”

Wei Wei nodded and stepped into the cell.

As the iron door slowly closed behind her, the guard walked to a bench in the distance and sat down.

Reaching Feng Qi’s side, Wei Wei first pulled out a device to detect listening devices from her pocket. After confirming there were none nearby, she examined him closely.

”Do you regret it?”

Feng Qi slowly raised his head to meet Wei Wei’s gaze, a smile spreading across his face.

”You will be condemned by history, branded a traitor to humanity until the end of Human Civilization. Do you regret it?”

”My only regret is not going further.”

Wei Wei’s eyes flickered at these words. She knelt down and gently traced the scabbed wounds on his body.

”You look truly hideous now.”

”I’m not dating anyone, so why bother being attractive? Who would I even be trying to impress?” Feng Qi replied with a smile.

”It’s a shame you’re dying tomorrow. Otherwise, we might have been able to make it work. I wouldn’t have minded your ugliness, and I’ve never dated either.”

Hearing this, Feng Qi was taken aback before shaking his head. ”Forget it. You’re too old. An old cow eating young grass is out of the question.”

”Ouch, ouch, ouch!”

Suddenly, Feng Qi cried out in pain as Wei Wei’s hand, which had been gently stroking his wounds, tightened its grip.

The supervisor outside, though unable to hear the conversation through the glass, was startled by Feng Qi’s contorted expression. Fortunately, Feng Qi quickly regained his composure, or the supervisor might have worried that Wei Wei would accidentally kill the already critically ill man during her research.

”Do you have any last words?” Wei Wei asked.

”I can only accompany you this far. I can’t walk the rest of the path with you. Good luck.”

As Wei Wei gazed at Feng Qi’s smile, she took a deep breath. ”Just that?”

”So... after I die, burn me an inflatable doll. I’m afraid I won’t be able to find a partner down there because I’m too ugly.”

Hearing this, Wei Wei’s heart trembled, but she laughed and said, ”I’ll burn you two, so you can experience a threesome.”

As her words faded, they both burst into laughter.

Throughout the conversation, Wei Wei maintained a smile, but Feng Qi noticed her body trembling from time to time.

”Alright, let’s go back. Let me get a good night’s sleep before I die. Otherwise, I’ll look exhausted tomorrow, and hundreds of millions of people will be watching my livestream.”

”Then sleep well. I won’t disturb you.”

”Don’t watch the livestream tomorrow. I’ll look terrible. If you can, try to block this video from being seen, and don’t let my future self see it either.”

”I’ll be up all night doing research tonight and sleeping in tomorrow morning. I won’t have time to watch. As for blocking the video... are you worried about hurting the other you?”

”He’s just a 17-year-old kid. He can’t handle too much pressure. He might cry if he sees it. Let’s give him a little hope.”

”I’ll do my best.”

”Then, goodbye.”

”Good night.”

After another careful look at Feng Qi, Wei Wei turned and approached the iron gate.

As the gate slowly opened, she walked through without looking back.

Leaving the United Military Department base, Wei Wei drove along the mountain road, finally unable to suppress her emotions.

She stopped the car and gazed at the bright moon hanging high in the sky, her eyes shimmering with tears.

When she saw Feng Qi’s body covered in wounds, she didn’t see ugliness, but a radiant sun.

”In this timeline, you lived for the rise of humanity. From now on, the Scarlet Research Institute will live for you.”

The next day at noon, Feng Qi was brought to the United Military Department’s execution ground.

Hundreds of cameras were trained on him, and the number of viewers in the United Military Department’s live broadcast room surged. The barrage of comments was undoubtedly filled with curses and scorn.

Dragging his chains, he was forced to kneel in the center of the execution ground.

The execution did not begin immediately. The United Military Department clearly wanted to let the online audience vent their anger and wait for the live broadcast viewership to peak before proceeding.

At this moment, he was nothing more than a target for collective outrage.

Forced to kneel on the ground, Feng Qi looked up at the sky. The midday sun beat down, making his wounds burn.

Just then, the execution ground’s gate swung open, and Mu Qing, dressed in the uniform of the Dawn Battle Group, strode in.

The United Military Department personnel immediately moved to stop her, but when they saw the insignia on her uniform, they quickly stopped and said, ”Commander Mu Qing, we are about to begin the execution. It is not convenient for you to enter.”

Ignoring their protests, Mu Qing walked straight onto the execution ground. Gazing at Feng Qi’s body, covered in wounds, her eyes shimmered with tears.

”There’s a reason, right?”

Facing the question, Feng Qi nodded without hesitation. He didn’t want Mu Qing to lose hope.

”Come with me. I’ll find a way to explain this.”

”There’s no need. I wasn’t meant to live long anyway. Even if you saved me, I wouldn’t have many days left.”

”It’s different. If you die here, you’ll forever bear the historical stigma.”

”What does it matter once I’m dead?”

Gazing at Mu Qing’s tightly pursed lips, Feng Qi smiled.

”Senior sister, I haven’t broken our promise. I hope you’ll carry my dream forward and not make a mistake here.”

Hearing this, Mu Qing didn’t nod, still staring at him with stubborn eyes.

Feng Qi sighed inwardly and continued to persuade her.

In truth, he could tell Mu Qing to contact the Scarlet Research Institute right now. The other him could obtain Mu Yao’s contact information in the future.

But this was extremely risky.

He still didn’t know who the werewolf near Mu Qing was. If the secret of the Scarlet Research Institute and his own identity were exposed, history might be altered.

Another version of him would also be unable to obtain the crucial information left behind by the Scarlet Research Institute.

Just as the email content had exposed them before.

In this timeline, the Scarlet Research Institute might not have time to retreat to their Secret Base after being exposed, as they would be targeted by the werewolves around Mu Qing and face annihilation.

To ensure safety, he chose to conceal the truth.

During their conversation, he repeatedly tried to persuade Mu Qing.

Her obsession was deeply rooted and couldn’t be easily shaken.

The execution time arrived quickly, but with Mu Qing present, the executioners couldn’t proceed.

Realizing Mu Qing might attempt to disrupt the execution, even high-ranking officials from the United Military Department were alarmed and rushed to the scene.

However, they held back from intervening until Mu Qing made a clear move to disrupt the execution.

Taking action now would undoubtedly push her into opposition, whereas inaction still left room for negotiation.

The situation reached a stalemate.

Mu Qing’s current status as the group leader of the Dawn Battle Group, one of the Ten Great Domain Battle Groups, and her distinguished military record made them hesitant to act rashly.

Time passed as Feng Qi continued his conversation with Mu Qing.

Finally, under his persistent persuasion, the unwavering resolve in her heart began to waver.

When they spoke of the Three Hungry Musketeers’ past at Star City Academy, Mu Qing finally broke down in tears.

”Do you have to die?”

”I only have a few days left to live anyway. It’s a dead end either way. You have a long road ahead of you. Someone has to carry my dream forward, or I’ll die with my eyes open,” Feng Qi said with a smile.

Hearing this, Mu Qing’s body trembled slightly.

Tears streamed down her face as she turned and walked toward the execution ground gate without looking back.

Fearing she might change her mind, the executioner immediately stepped forward and placed the icy, bone-chilling blade against the back of his neck.

As he prepared to bid farewell to this world, Feng Qi’s face remained serene, a smile still gracing his lips.

This life had its regrets, but it had been worth it.

The end was also a beginning.

His journey through life had reached its conclusion, yet it also marked the dawn of a new era.

As the sharp blade fell, a kaleidoscope of memories flooded his mind.

It was as if he were walking backward through the river of time, reliving his life in reverse, with countless figures flashing before his eyes.

Looking back on his life, Feng Qi felt no regret, only a pang of sorrow that he wouldn’t be able to continue exploring the path ahead for another version of himself.

A glorious era—this was the dream of everyone, including his own.

Countless memories flooded his mind.

He saw himself making a promise with Mu Qing by the moonlit lake.

He saw Old Wang passionately recounting the heroic deeds of historical figures in class.

He saw Wei Wei toiling day and night in the laboratory.

He saw Mu Yao standing firm with her spear, facing a tide of monsters as she guarded humanity’s last glimmer of hope.

Finally, he saw the oath he had made with his classmates under the starry sky before graduation, their cries of determination to strive for the rise of humanity still echoing clearly in his ears.

He personally buried letters filled with hopes for the future, and in that moment, he secretly vowed:

If the future isn’t what I want, then I’ll make it the future I dream of.

Countless figures intertwined in his mind, composing an epic of humanity’s unyielding resistance.

Turning to gaze at the path ahead, shrouded in mist, he seemed to see a brightly lit future within the fog—a glorious era filled with all the beauty he had longed for, yet without end or conclusion.

But in this timeline, he had reached the end.

The beautiful future he would never reach.

As his eyes closed, the world spun. He heard the melodious strains of a harmonica echoing in his ears.

It was as if Mu Qing was sighing softly beside him.

I dedicate this song to you, without asking if we’ll part when it ends.

Finally, darkness consumed his vision. Everything vanished in that moment, except the unwavering belief in his heart, which transcended the river of history to descend upon another version of himself.

The celestial river turns, the curtains of night fall.

His life had begun with soaring ambitions, yet it ended in a bloated, shameful manner, drawing a definitive close.

But the crimson splash of blood he had shed remained scalding, burning hot.

It soaked into the river of history, illuminating a section of the path ahead that had been shrouded in mist.
