Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The hospital was about twenty minutes from the stadium.

By the time the squad arrived, Daniel was already in the corridor outside the examination room, standing with his arms crossed and the particular stillness of a man who had decided to contain his anxiety rather than perform it. He looked up when the group came through the door, said nothing, and went back to watching the closed examination room.

Nobody talked much. They sat in the plastic chairs along the wall and waited.

The reason Daniel was most on edge wasn’t just that Ben Kehi was injured. It was that Ben Kehi was the only player in the squad who had learned to read Mateo’s rhythm - the timing of the passes, the angles, where the ball was going before it arrived. That understanding had been built in the 4:30am sessions, in the training ground repetitions, in six days of working the same patterns until they became instinct. Replacing that with Ward Clarence for the next two weeks was a tactical problem, not just a personnel one.

The door opened. The doctor came out, mask pulled down, looking at his clipboard.

Daniel was beside him in two steps. ”How is he?”

The doctor looked up. ”Minor ligament strain. Not serious. Two weeks of rest and light rehabilitation, and he’ll be back.”

The sound that came out of Daniel wasn’t quite words. More the exhale of a man releasing something he’d been holding since the fifty-second minute.

Around the corridor, the players let out the same breath in various forms — a muttered word, a hand on someone’s shoulder, Benedict sitting back in his chair and looking at the ceiling for a moment.

”Go home,” Daniel said to the group. ”All of you. Get some rest.”

The players filed out. Mateo stopped at the ward doorway, looked in briefly. Ben Kehi was lying back on the examination table, eyes half-open, ankle wrapped. He looked more tired than hurt. He raised two fingers in a small wave without lifting his hand from the bed.

Mateo gave a quick wave and a nod before heading out.

In the Schalke main building, on the top floor, Magath was studying Cottbus.

The Bundesliga match was at eight. He had the tactical notes spread across his desk and the opposition’s defensive shape mapped on the board. He’d been through this once already. He was going through it again because that was how he worked, not trusting the first read, always looking for the thing he’d missed.

A knock.

”Come in.”

Hughes Yves entered with a fax in his hand. His expression suggested the fax was not about Cottbus.

”Transfer enquiry,” Hughes Yves said. ”From Manchester United.”

Magath looked up. ”The window is nearly closed.”

”I know. It just arrived.”

Magath took it. Read the name. Read it again.

Mateo Silva.

He put the fax down and looked at Hughes Yves. ”Who is this?”

”U18. The Brazilian kid who signed a few weeks ago.” Hughes Yves paused. ”One goal in his debut, four assists in the second match.”

Magath picked the fax back up.

Ferguson. The old man didn’t send enquiries for players he wasn’t already certain about. If he was asking about a seventeen-year-old in Schalke’s U18 squad after two matches, someone had been watching. And if someone from United’s scouting network had been sitting in the Garden Stadium for a Third Division match, the player was already known.

”Do you have footage?”

”I can get it.”

”Get it now.” Magath was already standing. ”And find that player. If Ferguson’s people have already spoken to him, we have maybe an hour before he agrees to something he can’t take back.”

Hughes Yves was already moving.

The coffee shop was a ten-minute walk from the hospital, on a quiet street that caught the late afternoon sun.

Mateo had agreed to sit down mainly because the man had produced an official Manchester United scouting credential without being asked, which meant he’d anticipated the scepticism and come prepared. That was worth five minutes of his time at least.

Carl was somewhere in his mid-forties, with the groomed, unhurried manner of someone who spent his career in rooms where people wanted things from him. He had a good handshake and an excellent suit and had clearly said everything he was about to say many times before.

”I’ve been watching you since the Rostock match,” Carl said. ”Saturday confirmed it. What you’re doing at seventeen in the German Third Division - the vision, the delivery, the reading of space, that’s not Third Division level. It’s not even close.”

Mateo drank his coffee and listened.

”Manchester United want to move on this before the window closes. Not a loan, a proper transfer. First-team training from day one. Cup match appearances to start. The environment around you would be the best young players in Europe.” Carl leaned forward slightly. ”Sir Alex Ferguson has built more careers than any manager alive. You’ve seen what he did with Ronaldo. Rooney. Scholes. These aren’t coincidences.”

Mateo looked at his coffee cup.

The pitch was good. It was honest about what United were offering and honest about why they wanted him. Carl hadn’t oversold it or made promises he couldn’t keep, he’d described the environment accurately and let the name carry the weight.

He was still working through what he actually thought about it when his phone rang.

He glanced at it. Wickliff.

”Sorry.” He answered.

”Mateo.” Wickliff’s voice, brisk. ”Where are you? Mr. Magath wants to see you.”

”I’m outside. Something came up after the hospital.” He chose his words carefully - not lying, not confirming anything.

There was a brief shuffle on the line. Then a different voice.

”This is Hughes Yves - Magath’s assistant. We know you’re talking to someone from Manchester United.” The tone was direct but not hostile. ”We’d appreciate it if you came in before making any decisions. Mr. Magath wants to speak with you personally. Now, if possible.”

”Alright, I’m on my way.” He ended the call.

Carl was watching him from across the table with the expression of a man who understood exactly what that call had been.

”Club matters,” Mateo said. He put his cup down. ”Can we continue this later?”

”Of course.” Carl’s smile was professional and entirely unbothered. He had been doing this long enough to recognise that Schalke reacting quickly was not necessarily a problem. If anything, it confirmed the asset’s value. Manchester United could wait a few hours. ”Take your time. Whatever they offer you - think about what it means to develop at a club the size of United, with the resources and the profile.” He slid a business card across the table. ”I’ll be here.”

Mateo took the card. ”I’ll call you.”

He stepped outside, raised his hand for a taxi, and watched the evening traffic while he waited.

He was thinking about what Magath was going to say.

The taxi pulled up.

He got in.
