I Was Summoned as the Weakest Hero, But I Awakened a Military System

The transit west took nearly five full days across calm waters.

Ayanokoji and Miyuki had been assigned a small, spartan stateroom usually reserved for visiting officers deep within the carrier’s living quarters. Aside from the constant low thrum of the nuclear reactors and the occasional vibration of catapult launches rattling the steel bulkheads overhead, the voyage was uneventful. Captain Daniel had been kept under medical watch in sickbay, his cracked ribs bound and his movements strictly restricted by armed Marines.

On the morning of the third day, a knock sounded at the metal door. Lieutenant Miller stepped in, nodding curtly.

”Grab your things,” Miller said. ”We’re entering harbor waters. Admiral Donovan cleared you two for flight deck viewing during approach.”

Miyuki set down a plastic bottle of water and stood up, smoothing the creases of her white traveler’s dress. ”Thank you, Lieutenant.”

Ayanokoji followed silently, stepping through the maze of watertight doors and ladders until they pushed past the heavy weather seal leading onto the carrier’s catwalk.

The salt breeze hit them immediately, cool and sharp against their faces. But it wasn’t the open ocean that caught their attention—it was the land rising out of the horizon.

”Ayanokoji, look...” Miyuki whispered, her hand moving to the gray railing.

Before them stretched a massive island surrounded by deep blue water, framed by jagged green mountains in the far distance. But what dominated the coastline was not ancient stone walls or wooden docks.

It was an enormous, sprawling modern deep-water naval base.

Massive concrete piers jutted hundreds of yards into the bay, lined with towering yellow container cranes, heavy fuel bunkering lines, and thick bollards. Several gray fleet auxiliary supply ships and a pair of guided-missile cruisers were already moored along the slips, with automated shore pumps feeding fuel and fresh water through thick rubber hoses.

Beyond the docks, the infrastructure expanded into a vast logistics hub. Paved asphalt roads cut clean black lines through the landscape, populated by olive-drab tactical trucks, civilian-style white pickups, and forklifts shuttling shipping containers back and forth. Long rows of prefabricated steel warehouses and corrugated hangars lined the waterfront, their silver roofs gleaming under the morning sun.

Further inland, high-tension power lines stretched across steel pylons, leading toward a cluster of reinforced administration buildings, barracks blocks, and a paved airfield where transport planes sat parked in neat diagonals.

”This is... completely modern,” Miyuki said, her eyes wide as she gripped the rail. ”It looks like Yokosuka... or Okinawa. It’s not just a base. It’s a whole city.”

”It’s an expeditionary base built on standardized military engineering,” Ayanokoji noted calmly, his eyes scanning the perimeter. ”Prefabricated modular barracks, paved runways, high-output electrical grids, and automated logistics. If the mainland wasn’t summoned, someone had to supply the raw materials and manpower to pour that much concrete in seven months.”

”Now I truly wonder who leads this place? It’s possibly the President?”

”It’s the Supreme Commander,” Ayanakoji corrected.

”Supreme Commander...” Miyuki murmured, turning the title over in her mind. ”That’s not a standard civilian title in the modern United States, is it? Even with the President being the Commander-in-Chief, hearing Admiral Donovan refer to a ’Supreme Commander’ sounds more like wartime martial law. Or something else entirely.”

”It implies unified military and political authority concentrated in a single individual,” Ayanokoji said, his gaze tracking a heavy diesel transport truck rumbling along the concrete pier below. ”If the mainland wasn’t summoned, the conventional chain of command—the White House, Congress, the Pentagon—no longer exists in any functional capacity. Whoever is sitting at the apex of this command structure had to build or consolidate this entire force from scratch. Whether that person is a surviving general, an elected official who ended up here, or someone else entirely remains to be seen.”

”Do you think it’s someone from our world who was summoned like us?” Miyuki asked, her voice dropping lower so the escorting sailors wouldn’t overhear. ”Someone with an ability that somehow ties directly to modern military hardware?”

”That’s one hypothesis,” Ayanokoji replied flatly. ”Goddess Viona claimed to have summoned dozens of individuals over the centuries. It’s statistically possible another modern nation’s citizen was pulled here before us, granted an anomalous skill, and spent months establishing a perimeter. But without empirical data, speculating on their identity is pointless. We will know soon enough.”

A heavy metal hatch clattered open behind them. Captain Daniel stepped onto the catwalk, flanked by two armed Marines. His broken ribs had been wrapped in clean white bandages, and his torn imperial tunic had been washed, but the proud Solarian officer looked thoroughly broken.

He leaned against the guardrail, took one look across the harbor, and froze.

The sheer scale of the concrete docks, the towering yellow cranes lifting steel containers with mechanical ease, and the paved black roads filled with roaring, horseless vehicles overwhelmed his senses. His knuckles turned bone-white against the rail, his breathing shallow and rapid.

”Where... where are the palisades?” Daniel stammered in Solarian, his eyes darting frantically from ship to shore. ”Where are the stone runes? The watchtowers? By the Goddess... what manner of sorcery can level an entire coastline into flat gray stone?!”

”It’s not sorcery, Captain,” Ayanokoji answered in the same Solarian dialect, his tone indifferent. ”It’s industrial engineering. They don’t use magic to lay stone or carry cargo. They use machinery.”

”Machinery...” Daniel repeated, the word tasting like poison on his tongue. ”No men pull oars. No oxen draw carts. Metal carriages run on flat black earth without beasts... This is the realm of demons. Cold, godless iron demons.”

”Hold your tongue,” Ayanokoji advised calmly. ”Remember why you are here. If you want to petition their leader and demand explanations for your fallen vanguard, hurling insults at the people holding your leash will only guarantee you spend the rest of your life in a cell.”

Daniel’s jaw clenched, his eyes burning with helpless humiliation, but he shut his mouth.

The Ford eased into its designated berth with the steady assistance of harbor tugs. Mooring lines the thickness of tree trunks were tossed and fastened to steel bollards. Gangways lowered with a sharp mechanical hiss, connecting the cavernous hangar deck directly to the pier.

Lieutenant Miller stepped up beside them. ”Escort is here. Time to move.”

They were guided down through the carrier’s lower levels and walked down the wide ramp onto the solid concrete. The air smelled of salt, hot asphalt, and diesel fumes—scents that felt impossibly familiar yet completely surreal in a world supposed to be dominated by swords and spells.

A convoy of black SUVs and two armored Humvees waited near the base of the pier. Standing beside the lead vehicle was an officer wearing modern tactical camouflage, his sidearm holstered at his hip, holding a digital tablet under his arm.

”Mr. Ayanokoji, Miss Miyuki,” the officer greeted them in English, nodding crisply. ”I’m Captain Vance, base security liaison. Admiral Donovan notified command of your arrival. Please step inside.”

Miyuki nodded politely, while Daniel recoiled slightly from the sleek black metal of the vehicle. Only after Ayanokoji gave him a firm, pointed look did the imperial captain reluctantly duck his head and slide into the middle row, trembling slightly as the door shut behind him with a heavy, airtight thud.

The convoy rolled smoothly out of the port zone, speeding down wide paved boulevards past logistics depots, radar domes, and barracks blocks. Ahead of them, past a heavily guarded inner security gate, loomed a large, reinforced concrete headquarters building flying the American flag.

”So that’s where the Supreme Commander is staying huh?”
