Spider-Man : The Story of a Hero

EIGHTH WEEK — TACTICAL TRAINING AREA

Two long months had now passed since the recruits arrived at the camp. And in only eight weeks, the young people who had walked through its gates for the first time had changed considerably. Their movements had become faster and more precise, their reactions far more disciplined, and orders that had once been met with complaints or annoyed looks were now carried out almost instinctively.

But most importantly, they had gradually stopped functioning as thirty separate individuals. After suffering, learning, and improving together, they had begun to become a real group.

It was now time to bring together some of everything they had learned so far. The skills they had practiced separately over the previous weeks would now have to be used simultaneously, in situations where a single mistake could quickly disrupt their entire organization.

Throughout various tactical exercises, the recruits were confronted with several simulated situations in which they had to move efficiently, communicate with one another, observe their surroundings, and make quick decisions whenever a problem arose.

Nothing, however, was designed to simply allow them to mechanically repeat what they had learned. The instructors regularly changed the conditions of the exercises, specifically to prevent them from relying on their habits.

A mission could begin perfectly, with a properly established plan and a group moving exactly as intended, only for a sudden change to completely disrupt their entire organization. The recruits then had to be capable of reacting, abandoning a strategy that had become useless, and adopting a new one without completely losing their composure.

The objective was no longer simply to know how to apply what they had been taught, but to successfully adapt it whenever the situation no longer matched what they had imagined.

And when night fell, the training didn’t necessarily stop. Some exercises continued in the form of movements and patrols through the darkness, forcing the recruits to reuse what they had learned the previous week.

After an entire day of exertion, fatigue weighed heavily on their bodies and slowed their thinking, making every decision slightly more difficult to make. Yet they still had to keep moving, communicating, and remaining focused enough not to let exhaustion destroy the group’s organization.

For the first time since the beginning of the camp, all these skills they had learned separately were truly beginning to form a complete whole. Strength, endurance, observation, communication, navigation, discipline, and the ability to think under pressure were no longer independent exercises. Little by little, the recruits were beginning to understand why their instructors had pushed them in so many different areas since their arrival.

NINTH WEEK — TRAINING GROUND

There were now only a few days left before they reached the final part of their training. After nine weeks spent observing their progress, strengths, and weaknesses, the instructors wanted to evaluate something different this time.

They no longer simply wanted to know whether their recruits were capable of properly carrying out an instruction. They wanted to discover how they would behave when no solution was directly given to them.

Divided into several groups, the recruits were given different missions to complete with limited time and resources. They had to decide for themselves how to organize, divide the tasks, and determine the most effective way to reach their objective.

And whenever one method began working a little too well, the instructors deliberately added a new difficulty, forcing the group to rethink its organization and adapt without waiting to be told exactly what to do.

Very quickly, Amadeus naturally began to establish herself within her group. Not because she raised her voice more than the others, nor because she desperately wanted to be the one in command. She simply understood what needed to be done faster.

Her eyes constantly moved from one element to another, analyzing the available resources, the people around her, and the different tasks they needed to complete. Whenever she noticed that a decision was costing them time, she adjusted their organization. Whenever a problem appeared, she immediately looked for another way to proceed.

And perhaps even more surprisingly, Flash never tried to take that position from her.

He listened to her.

Whenever Amadeus assigned him a task, he carried it out without turning every decision into a competition. Whenever a situation involved an area she understood better than he did, he trusted her and followed her instructions.

After all those weeks spent together, Flash knew his friend well enough to recognize the moments when her intelligence was their greatest advantage.

But that didn’t mean he simply stayed behind her waiting for instructions. As the exercise continued, Flash quickly noticed that several recruits were beginning to show signs of fatigue.

Some were gradually becoming less effective, while others still had enough energy to continue handling the most physically demanding tasks. Without Amadeus needing to ask him anything, he spontaneously took charge of some of those tasks and began pushing them forward.

He never tried to become the leader of the entire group. The role didn’t even particularly interest him. Yet almost naturally, several recruits began turning to him whenever a task required greater physical effort or whenever they needed to keep going despite their exhaustion.

While Amadeus thought about the best way to move the entire group forward, Flash made sure that part of it still had enough energy to turn her decisions into action.

A little farther away, Sergeants Mark and Morasson carefully observed the way they worked together. They had been watching this relationship develop for several weeks now, but that day, their complementary nature had become particularly difficult to ignore.

— ”Their duo is really impressive. It’s like they naturally know their place and their role without even needing to say anything to each other.” Sergeant Mark said.

Sergeant Morasson added:

— ”Between one’s physique and the other’s brains… those two really do make a great pair.”

And that was precisely what was happening in front of them. Amadeus organized, analyzed, and adapted their strategy while Flash kept the others moving and stepped in wherever his abilities could be most useful. They didn’t even need to constantly consult each other anymore.

Each of them seemed to have learned how to recognize the other’s strengths and, more importantly, to naturally step aside whenever they knew the other would be more effective.

The training then continued with the management of equipment and the different resources needed to complete their mission. Once again, the recruits discovered that leading a group wasn’t simply about giving orders to others.

They needed to know exactly what they had available, understand what they actually needed, and avoid unnecessarily wasting anything that might become essential later. But they also needed to know the people they were working with and be capable of properly using each person’s abilities rather than imposing the same responsibilities on everyone.

And on that last point, Flash and Amadeus were already one step ahead without ever really trying to be. Ever since their very first meeting, when Flash had carried the young woman on his back to finish the final laps of their training, their differences had always been obvious.

Where one naturally possessed certain qualities, the other made up for their weaknesses. And as the weeks went by, what had initially been nothing more than simple mutual support between two recruits had become something far more natural.

After nine weeks spent together, Flash and Amadeus had become more than just friends.

They had learned how to work together.
