Blood and Mud

Chapter 51: Chapter 51

Morning over the southern marshes was just the dark watered down to a sickly, bruised grey. Fog rolled off the stagnant water and clung to the canvas tents of the 7th like a shroud.

I stood outside the command pavilion with the damp air sitting heavy in my lungs. The Rune of Antiquity gave a faint, icy throb along my right arm, answering stars I couldn’t see behind the cloud. Astra sat motionless on my shoulder, black eyes fixed on the horizon.

The camp was too quiet. No sergeants bawling orders, no cauldrons clanging on the fire grates. The roar that had driven this army had died with General Kaelus.

Far off, in the middle of the West Border Army’s camp, a thick pillar of oily black smoke climbed into the grey. They were burning the Butcher of the Plains. His heavy infantry, the men who’d followed him through the mud and the barbarian steel, stood around the pyre without a sound. Forty thousand men had died taking the central basin. Kaelus had died holding it.

I flexed my right hand inside its gauntlet and felt the strength sitting in my arm, dense and ready. I’d come up out of the ruins alive. I had killed a tree the size of a watchtower, caved in an invisible assassin’s chest, and taken a divine weapon into my own flesh. But all of this was irrelevant; a man of greater renown and skill had fallen; I could also.

Then the grey light spread across the camp, and the war just ended.

No final, glorious charge of the heavy cavalry. No Coalition warlords laying their weapons down in the mud. It ended with a silver trumpet, clean and sharp and aristocratic, somewhere out past the tents.

I turned toward the sound. A small, orderly party of riders was coming out of the fog on the northern road.

Not fighting men. Their horses were sleek and unarmored, and where the Vanguard wore blood-dark crimson, these riders wore spotless purple and gold silk, the colors of the Capital.

At their head rode a royal envoy, carrying a long, polished ivory tube sealed with the Emperor’s crest in golden wax.

The 7th’s sentries didn’t cheer, and they didn’t salute. They tightened their grip on their rusted spears and watched with sunken, worn-out eyes as those clean riders picked their way across mud the legion had bled to take.

Miklas came out of the command pavilion. He’d left his plate off and wore a plain dark tunic, and without the armor his big, scarred frame looked tired down to the bone. His jaw was set like stone as he watched the envoy dismount.

Erula followed a moment later, and for the first time since I’d come back from the caves she was dressed for war. Spiked black armor strapped on, crimson cloak pinned with the silver insignia of her rank. Her red eyes narrowed to slits on the Emperor’s seal.

The envoy came on toward the pavilion with two Imperial Palace Guards at his shoulders, men who looked ridiculously out of place in all that filth. He was slender, with a powdered face and a beard trimmed to a perfect line. He stopped exactly three paces from Erula and didn’t so much as blink at her red eyes. Then he unrolled the heavy parchment from the tube.

”Commander Erula of the Seventh Legion.” His voice had a practiced, stagey ring that sounded wrong in the dead quiet of the marsh. ”I bring you the word of the Emperor.”

Miklas folded his arms across his chest. Erula didn’t bow. She looked down at the man and waited.

”By the divine grace of the throne,” the envoy read, eyes moving along the fine calligraphy, ”a formal armistice has been struck with the remaining Warlords of the Mud and Blood Coalition. The barbarian tribes have agreed to cease all raids across the border into Imperial territory.”

Nobody spoke. The quiet after those words sat on the camp like a weight.

”In exchange,” he went on, and rolled the parchment up again with a crisp little snap, ”the Emperor decrees the immediate and complete withdrawal of all Imperial forces from the southern marshes. The occupied territories, the central basin and the eastern bogs among them, are to be ceded back to the Coalition. The war is over. You are ordered to break camp and return to your garrisons.”

The Ember flared in my chest and had nowhere to go. I looked at Miklas. He stood perfectly still, but the muscles in his jaw were jumping so hard I thought his teeth would crack.

I could guess where his mind had gone. To Yuni, first. Then to the vanguard that fell in that encirclement and bought me the seconds I needed to evolve. Then to forty thousand dead still lying out there in the mud.

”Ceded.” The word came out of Miklas like poison. ”We broke their army. We slaughtered the Turtle Tribe in their own camps. Kaelus gave his life to take that basin. And the Emperor’s handing it back.”

The envoy gave him a look that mixed polite pity with highborn contempt. ”The Emperor has secured peace, Captain. The Empire will no longer pour gold and men into a worthless swamp. The borders are safe. That is the victory.”

Erula laughed, low and slow, and nothing in it was amused.

”Peace,” she said, and stepped toward him, her tall armored frame forcing him back a nervous pace into the mud. ”The Emperor ran out of coin for the supply lines, and the nobles got tired of reading casualty lists over their banquets. Kaelus died for a piece of paper.”

”Careful, Commander.” The envoy’s voice had gone tight, one hand on the hilt of his decorative sword. ”That borders on treason.”

”It borders on reality.” She turned her back on him and looked at Miklas, then at me. The lazy, bored aristocrat I’d watched sprawl across basilisk hides had vanished. What stood there in that dull light was the woman who commanded one of the deadliest legions in the Empire, and she had no sentiment to spare. ”The capital wants its peace. Let it have it. The mud can swallow the Coalition for all I care.”

She swept her eyes over the filthy camp.

”Strike the tents!” She put the heat of her Bud behind her voice, and it rolled across the whole perimeter. ”Pack the wagons! We’re leaving this festering rot behind!”

For a breath nobody moved. Then a sergeant down the lines started cursing, long and foul, and the whole camp broke into bitter, tangled motion.

Nobody celebrated. Nobody sang around the fire pits. Tent poles cracked, canvas ripped, and the legionnaires slung supply crates onto the mud-caked wagons with tight-jawed fury. They were walking away from their brothers’ graves, leaving the blood they’d spilled for the next rain to wash out.

I went back to my small tent to gather what little I owned. I took the bastard sword down off my back and felt the weight of the dark steel in my hands. Then I looked at the pale starry scars along my right arm.

This war had hollowed me out. Everything from my old life, the tactical manuals, the concrete cities, the name I used to have, had burned away when I evolved. What was left was the Elvit, and I’d embraced it.

Myra found me by the wagons an hour later. She was in her severe dark uniform, a thick ledger of reports pressed against her chest. She read my face and kept her voice low.

”The 5th Cohort splits off at the crossroads,” she said, with a rare softness in all that chaos. ”They’re marching east, back to Trivi. We take the northern road. Back to Shepfold.”

”Shepfold.” The fortress of the 7th. A stronghold of stone and iron, far from the damp and the blood of the marshes.

”It’s over, Elvit.” She laid a gloved hand on my left arm, well clear of the scars on the right. ”You survived. We survived.”

”Yuni didn’t.” It came out hard and flat. ”Kaelus didn’t. Forty thousand men didn’t.”

Myra didn’t argue. She knew exactly how hollow the victory was. She squeezed my arm once and went off to get the quartermasters moving.

By midday the temporary city had vanished. In its place a column of infantry and heavy cavalry stretched out, endless, hooves and creaking axles and the clank of armor rolling north under a low sky, with the black smoke of Kaelus’s pyre hanging low behind us and throwing a long shadow over the retreating army.

I rode near the head of the 7th’s column on a big armored Imperial warhorse, well clear of the infantry. Miklas rode on my left with his visor down, lost in his own thoughts. Erula rode at the front, crimson cloak snapping in the stale breeze, her back as straight as a lance.

Astra had no cage. He wheeled high above the column, free and silent, the rune under his wing pulsing in time with mine.

The wheels of the supply wagons churned the swamp mud for the last time, and I turned in the saddle to look back.

The southern marshes ran out to the horizon, a vast sea of green and brown rot. Somewhere in there was the cavern where I’d bled and starved and fought in the dark. Somewhere in the deep bogs, the Shaman’s wrecked laboratory was already sinking back into the earth.

I’d left my childhood in that mud and my old life in the dark.

I faced front. The rune pulsed cold against my skin, and the Ember burned steady and fierce in my chest.

The war was over.

Then I looked at the grim faces of the vanguard marching toward Shepfold, and I knew the peace was a lie. We were weapons, made in blood. And nobody leaves weapons sitting in the armory for long.
