Percy Jackson: The Firstborn

Chapter 24: Chapter 24: Before the Battle

Mount Olympus

”THAT WAS INCREDIBLE!” Damon shouted after landing without any problem on the top of the mountain.

A drop of sweat appeared on his neck when he realized that the woman in his arms was still squeezing him with all her strength while screaming on his shoulder, not realizing they had already arrived.

”Hey, we already arrived, stop screaming” he said while shaking the woman a little.

When the woman heard that, she slowly moved her face away from Damon’s shoulder and opened her eyes to look around her. Seeing that Damon was not lying and that they had reached their destination, she quickly looked at Damon with slightly teary eyes because of the force of the air she received when she opened them while she was literally flying, and from the fear she felt when she saw how far the ground was. Then she pinched one of Damon’s cheeks hard.

”You’re crazy, you almost killed us!” the woman shouted while squeezing Damon’s cheek harder.

”Okay, okay, I’m sorry, now let go of my cheek” Damon said quickly, defenseless since both his hands were holding the woman.

Quickly two women came out of what looked like a small palace to see what was happening because of the screams they were hearing, only to see Damon holding a very beautiful strange woman in his arms, something that made them a little jealous.

”Damon, why are you still here? Poseidon, Hades and Zeus left a while ago” one of the two women said while still looking at the woman in Damon’s arms trying to figure out who she was.

Upon hearing the new voice, Damon looked up to see Hestia and Rhea approaching him and the woman, who released Damon’s cheek when she heard the new voice.

”I was—” Damon tried to say but was interrupted by Rhea, who was not very happy, let’s say.

”Tell me you didn’t do what I read in the note and went to Tartarus alone” Rhea said with anger in her voice, intimidating Damon a little. He was incapable of feeling fear from the worst monsters of Tartarus or being present before the most powerful figures in the world, yet he was subdued like a small child when standing in front of an angry woman—especially if she was angry because of him.

When he heard the accusation, he released the woman from his arms and raised his hands in surrender.

”Guilty” he said while closing his eyes when he saw Rhea approaching.

He was waiting for the hit he would receive from Rhea. The truth was he believed he deserved it for worrying her. But it was something he needed to do, and by doing it he gained more than he had expected from the beginning. Yet that hit never came. Instead, he received a tight hug, which left him perplexed, and he quickly opened his eyes.

”Idiot, don’t scare me like that again. Do you know how dangerous that place is? What if you got trapped there?” Rhea said very worried about Damon’s actions.

Upon hearing those words, he quickly hugged Rhea back to calm her.

”Relax, I know how to take care of myself, even if it doesn’t look like it. Besides, I received more help than I expected” he said to calm Rhea and Hestia, who did not know he had gone alone to Tartarus. When she heard her mother say that, she became very worried about Damon’s recklessness.

”And who is she?” Rhea asked when she calmed down a little and remembered that he did not arrive alone.

When Damon heard that question, he placed his hand on his chin in a thoughtful pose while thinking about how to answer Rhea.

”She is something like your sister... step-sister? I don’t know” Damon said, leaving Rhea and Hestia even more confused.

”What?” Hestia asked, quite confused.

”Do you remember when mother told us a story where she said Uranus had a last child after Kronos’s betrayal?” Damon said while receiving a nod from Hestia.

”Well, she is Uranus’s last daughter” he finished saying, leaving the two women shocked.

”Hello” the woman greeted with a hand and a smile on her face.

”Oh dear, you are truly beautiful” Rhea said while approaching her to place her hands on the woman’s face and better see her beauty. She quickly noticed that the woman’s hair was messy and tried to fix it a little with her fingers, which earned her a grateful smile from the beautiful lady in front of her.

Hestia did not take long to introduce herself, smiling at the woman who was now her ”aunt,” since family had always been something very important to her, receiving a smile from Damon at the interactions between the women.

”What is your name?” Rhea asked while Hestia stood beside her mother to hear the woman’s name.

”Aphrodite” Aphrodite answered, still with a smile on her face. She did not know them much, but she was already beginning to like the two women.

But every good moment eventually comes to an end, and this one ended with a great tremor and a loud crash that destabilized everyone present. Hestia stumbled but was caught by Damon who was beside her and held her so she would not fall. Immediately after, the last two women who were still inside the ”palace” came out to see what was happening, only to find Hestia, Rhea, and Damon together with a woman unknown to them.

”Damn, the battle has started earlier than I expected” Damon said while looking toward where the battle was happening. ”I have to go. Rhea, take care of her for me. I promised Uranus” Damon said, leaving Rhea shocked after mentioning that Damon had met Uranus.

”Wait, what else did you receive in Tartarus besides the help of the Hecatoncheires?” Rhea asked, cursing herself for not noticing earlier the words Damon had said while hugging him.

”I don’t have time to explain everything” Damon said while walking toward the edge of the mountain’s slope. He quickly turned around and pointed at Aphrodite. ”She knows, just ask her” he said before turning again and jumping in the direction of the battle, propelled by a massive gust of wind, which left everyone even more shocked—except Aphrodite, since they did not know why the air had helped Damon.

”Are all men like that?” Aphrodite asked since he was the first one she had seen in her life.

”Like what?” Hestia asked while looking toward the direction Damon had jumped.

”It’s very strange. He helped me and didn’t ask for anything in return. He always tried to act kindly toward me without even knowing me... are they all like that?” she asked again.

”Oh dear, if all men were half like him, this world would be a better place. Most are ambitious, egocentric, or traitorous. He does not care about any of that. He simply wants to achieve peace so he can live with the people he considers precious. But unfortunately, I think there will only ever be one Damon in this world” Rhea answered with a sad smile, as she had a bad feeling about all of this.
