The Broken Halo

”You’re a monster.”

”You’re a calamity.”

”An abomination.”

”A curse.”

The voices echoed into the world before the outlines did.

Kraghs gathered around a training ground. Beyond them stood the shapes of houses, walls, and the uneven road leading home. Sonya could not remember their faces or the colours of their clothes. She had never seen them.

Her memories held only the outlines her senses had given her. A body leaning away. A hand pulling another child back. Feet retreating whenever hers came closer. The words, however, remained painfully clear.

From the moment she was born, there had been something about Sonya that frightened even her own kind. Cruelty was hardly unusual among demons. They fought, killed, and took what they wanted from those too weak to resist.

What, then, could make demons call a newborn child a monster?

Sonya had heard the story of her birth so often that she knew it better than many things she actually remembered.

She had been born blind because her affinity for the earth element was far too high. Her eyes had never given her the world, but the ground had answered her before she understood that there was anything to answer.

The first time she cried after she was born, the land of the Kraghs shook.

It was not a tremor confined to her parents’ home. Roads split through the settlement. Stone houses folded inward, and great sections of the surrounding slopes broke loose, burying buildings and the demons inside them.

Kraghs rushed out to control the collapsing earth. Others dug through rubble while voices called from beneath it. By the time the shaking stopped, many of those voices had gone silent.

Nothing like it had ever accompanied a Kragh’s birth.

The powerful Kraghs who investigated soon discovered the source. Beneath every disturbance, the earth’s response led back to a tiny child lying beside a mother who had nearly died bringing her into the world.

It felt less like an attack than a welcome. The earth was rejoicing.

Despite the destruction, excitement spread among the leaders.

”An infant did this?”

”Imagine what she will become after awakening her Demon Heart.”

”We must nurture her properly.”

They spoke about instructors, resources, and everything Sonya might one day accomplish for their race. Beyond the house, families were still searching the ruins for their dead.

For a while, the promise of her future outweighed the cost of her arrival.

Then the ground shook again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

Sometimes a few bowls rattled against a shelf. Sometimes cracks spread through newly repaired walls. On other occasions, the earth convulsed violently enough to bring those same walls down before their owners could escape.

There was no reliable warning. Sonya could be crying, sleeping, or lying quietly in her father’s arms. A peaceful stretch would convince the Kraghs that the danger had passed, only for another earthquake to catch them unprepared.

They were earth users. This was the land they shaped, lived upon, and trusted beneath their feet.

Yet during those disturbances, even experienced Kraghs struggled to command it. A wall they tried to hold would shift toward the child. A fissure they forced shut would open again despite their efforts.

It was as though the earth preferred her to all of them.

She had not reached sixteen, and her Demon Heart had not awakened. This was not a technique she had learned or a deliberate use of cultivated power.

And that made it worse.

”Make her stop.”

The voices outside her parents’ home no longer spoke about the future.

”My brother was inside that house!”

”How many times are we supposed to rebuild?”

”What happens when she gets stronger?”

As Sonya grew, she gradually learned to quiet the disturbances. The ground became less likely to heave beneath her, and the earthquakes weakened. But learning control did not return anyone’s family.

A repaired shop did not replace everything buried beneath it. A reopened road did not undo months without work. Some households had lost their homes more than once, others had broken apart under grief, blame, and the struggle to survive.

To those Kraghs, Sonya was the reason.

She learned to recognise the pause before a neighbour spoke to her. The hurried steps when someone led a child away. Doors closed before she reached them, leaving her standing outside with whatever greeting she had prepared.

Once, she approached children practising in a small training yard. Their movements formed familiar outlines against the ground. Stones scraped into a rough circle, and Sonya stopped at its edge.

”Can I try?”

The scraping ceased.

”No.”

”I can keep my powers in check now,” she said quickly. ”I won’t break anything.”

A child stepped backward.

”That’s what you said before.”

Someone else called her a calamity. Another repeated the word abomination with the uncertain pronunciation of a child using something heard from an adult.

Sonya stayed there for several breaths. A pebble shifted beside her foot due to her unstable emotions, and the children scattered for fear of their lives.

She pressed her sole over it, holding it down long after their footsteps disappeared.

’I wasn’t going to hurt anybody.’

At home, she could say that aloud.

Her father would crouch until she could reach him, and her mother would make room beside her despite the effort it took to move. They were the only ones who did not hate her.

Outside, demons spoke about what she had destroyed or what her power might someday earn them. Her parents asked whether she had eaten, whether she was hurt, and why she had come home so quietly.

”Do you want me to stay inside?” Sonya once asked.

Her father’s hand stopped against her hair.

”Why would I want that?”

”So nothing happens.”

He drew her closer.

”You are not something we need to hide.”

Her mother reached for her hand.

Sonya knew where to place it without searching. Her mother’s outline barely moved from the bed, and the bitter smell of medicinal herbs had become part of the room.

Giving birth had nearly killed her. The damage had left her terribly weak, and even her Demon Heart rank had fallen. Ordinary rest could not repair what had happened.

She needed medicine, healing, and constant care. Years would be required before she could properly regain her strength.

Sonya heard the exhaustion in her breathing and the pauses she took between sentences. Her father heard them too.

He worked, bought medicine, sought healers, and returned home to prepare what her mother needed. Sometimes Sonya woke to the sound of him crushing herbs after everyone outside had gone quiet.

He never told her how much any of it cost.

Then one day, he left to buy another set of medicinal herbs.

”Stay with your mother,” he told Sonya, squeezing her hand before letting go.

She listened to his footsteps travel down the road until they faded beyond her senses.

Later, footsteps returned but they were not his.

Sonya lifted her head before the knock came. Her mother struggled to sit up, and the visitor remained near the doorway after being allowed inside.

”He went to buy the medicine,” the demon said.

Sonya waited for the rest.

There had been a fight with another demon, and her father had been killed.

That was all the explanation they received.

For several seconds, her mother made no sound. Then the bed shifted beneath her, and a breath escaped that Sonya had never heard before.

”Where is Father?” Sonya asked.

Nobody answered immediately.

She reached for her mother’s hand. It was trembling.

He had survived the earthquakes. He had returned after every journey, every long day, every night when Sonya listened for him from beside the bed.

This time, there would be no footsteps.

Her mother pulled her close with arms that shook beneath the effort. Sonya pressed her face against her and waited, unable to understand how someone could leave to buy medicine and never come home.

After that, the herbs in their room began running out.

Her mother was still ill. The neighbours still closed their doors. The ground still trembled when Sonya could not make it quiet.

Only now, her father was no longer there.

Their lives had been difficult while he was alive.

Without him, they began falling apart.
