The Broken Halo

”Little thing.”

The moment Sonya heard the demon’s words, she stopped walking and the compound became quieter.

The tall demon laughed softly, his eyes containing ridicule and disdain.

”I can sense earth affinity from you, and it’s not bad at all. But you should not look so angry. Are you upset because this big brother’s affinity is too high?”

A few demons around him laughed.

The tall demon looked down at Sonya’s small body with even more amusement.

”Don’t worry. Even if your affinity is not good, being small is not completely useless. You can hide behind rocks better than the rest of us.”

Some demons laughed louder.

Sonya slowly turned her head and looked at him.

Her expression was calm.

Too calm for Simon and Akaza not to know that this playful and chaotic demoness was definitely not pleased with his words.

Simon looked at the tall demon for a moment, then he looked at Sonya with slightly raised brows.

At first, he was a little bit confused as to why the demon would believe that Sonya’s earth affinity was lower than his when he should be able to sense Sonya’s high earth affinity and be more respectful and wary.

But after thinking about it, Simon understood.

It was exactly because Sonya’s earth affinity was a lot higher than the demon’s earth affinity that he could not accurate judge what Sonya’s earth affinity grade was.

It could not be properly put into words, but basically, the demon could not fathom how high Sonya’s earth affinity was.

Simon had heard of such a thing in his past life.

’Interesting. I wonder how high her earth affinity is.’

While Simon had these thoughts, the tall demon’s smile faded a little when he saw Sonya’s gaze, but he did not stop.

”What? Did I hurt your feelings?”

Sonya looked at him for a few seconds.

Then she smiled.

It was a beautiful smile, but for some reason, the demons close to her felt their hearts tighten.

Cold sweat also appeared on their backs.

”I’ll deal with you later.”

The tall demon frowned.

”What did you say?”

Sonya did not respond. Instead, she turned around and walked to the central pillar.

The official looked at her, then at the tall demon, but he said nothing.

Sonya placed her hand on the central pillar.

For a moment, nothing happened.

Then the ground beneath the compound trembled.

Not violently... But deeply.

Like something massive had opened its eyes beneath the earth.

Hum

The black central pillar released a low hum.

The earth pillar reacted.

A brown light appeared at the bottom.

Then it rose.

F grade.

E grade.

D grade.

C grade.

B grade.

A grade.

S grade.

The light did not stop there.

It filled the seventh section completely, and then the first thin rune line lit up.

Then the second.

Then the third.

Then the fourth.

The moment the fourth thin rune line was lit up, everybody knew what this meant.

Peak S grade earth affinity!

The entire compound became silent.

Nobody breathed.

Nobody spoke.

Even the wind seemed to disappear.

The official stared at the earth pillar with widened eyes.

The guards at the corners of the compound also looked over with shock written all over their faces.

The officials holding black plates and brushes froze in place.

Korran Veyl’s eyes narrowed, and for the first time since he appeared, his expression became truly serious.

Three S grade affinities.

And one of them was peak S grade.

This was no longer a simple good recruitment.

This was abnormal.

Highly abnormal... but also good for Velmora.

The tall demon who had mocked Sonya stared at the earth pillar with a stiff expression.

His face slowly lost color.

While everybody’s gaze was on the earth pillar, very few noticed the slight furrow of Sonya’s brows as she stared at the earth pillar.

A disappointed light flashed in her eyes, then she shook her head.

Although she could not see the light, she knew what affinity grade the earth pillar would give her.

And that was why she was disappointed.

Not at herself... but at Velmora’s method of testing someone’s affinity and affinity grade.

’Well, I shouldn’t be so disappointed. Even the Shadowgrave Clan disappointed me at first.’

’It was so overwhelmed that it could not even show my metal affinity... What a piece of garbage.’

Sonya removed her hand from the central pillar and turned around.

Her gaze landed on the tall demon.

She smiled faintly.

”You said I can hide behind rocks better than the rest of you guys because I’m small, right?”

The tall demon’s throat moved, but no words came out.

Sonya tilted her head slightly.

”Good.”

Her smile widened a little.

”Don’t worry. I’ll make sure to bury you so deep that even your ancestors won’t know where to look.”

After leaving these threatening words, Sonya walked toward Simon and Akaza with a cold expression.

Even though she was now the center of attention and had shut up every demon that mocked her, she was still pissed.

And she would not be satisfied until she breaks something.

The official who was responsible for calling out their names was still stunned by everything that just happened, but when he heard a deep cough from Korran Veyl, he immediately got himself.

He cleared his throat and called out the next name.

”Akaza.”

Simon and Sonya glanced at Akaza after he was called, and both of them had raised brows because they knew about Martial Demons and Akaza’s abilities.

Akaza walked forward with a calm and indifferent expression, then he placed his hand on the central pillar and channeled his demonic energy into it.

A minute passed, but there was no reaction from any of the pillars.

”No elemental affinity.”

The official announced loudly, but none had surprised expressions or expressions of mockery.

They already knew that some Martial Demons were not born with an elemental affinity but with a completely different ability.

And from what the black tattoos on Akaza’s body, they were certain that he was not weak in the slightest.

Akaza walked back to Simon and Sonya with the same calm and indifferent expression.

Then the official called the next name on the list.

”Blackmoon.”
