Chapter 1666: Chapter 1666: Planning to Strike the Neighboring County

With a slight ‘click’ sound, the wall to Shu Yu’s left slowly moved back about a meter, revealing a secret passage entrance beneath.

Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng exchanged a glance, and the two had the mountain bandit lead the way as they descended into the secret passage together.

The passage could accommodate two people walking side by side, not very spacious, but it seemed very long at a glance.

They carefully proceeded forward, and from the mountain bandit, Meng Yunzheng gleaned quite a bit of information.

There were only four people assigned to guard the big mansion, three had been killed, leaving just him.

They rotated every three days, and today happened to be the rotation day. Yuan Gui intended to take this opportunity to escape, but unexpectedly, his whereabouts were exposed.

Rotating every three days meant that, barring any accidents, no one would come up during these three days, giving them some time.

The passage before them led outside the city, Meng Yunzheng thought, no wonder the mansion wasn’t far from the city wall.

And at the end of the passage was the black market that everyone was searching for.

That’s right, the black market in Changjin Prefecture was located in a large manor not far outside Chenggu County.

Unlike the black market in Jiangyuan County, the one in Chenggu County was underground, involving countless transactions. It wasn’t like Jiangyuan County where you could enter with a token; here, anyone with some influence knew the address.

The black market here was hidden and dangerous, so people needed introductions from acquaintances to get in. Those who could enter were either rich or noble, and newcomers had to be carefully screened.

The mountain bandit said that recently the black market wasn’t open, not a single guest. But there were many people inside, all disguised as mountain bandits, coming from various places.

So, new faces like Meng Yunzheng and Shu Yu would not necessarily be recognized unless they met the person managing them or someone from the same team.

However, a portion of the people had been reassigned in the past two days. Chenggu County had already suffered from a mountain bandit chaos, and the citizens in the city were still panicked and under control from above, so there was no immediate need for concern. Hence, some people went to the neighboring county. In a couple of days, the neighboring county would experience the same chaos as Chenggu County.

Hearing this, Shu Yu and Meng Yunzheng’s expressions changed simultaneously.

Was this meant to completely disrupt the entire Changjin Prefecture so that General Huang and the soldiers arriving from the capital would be overwhelmed?

Meng Yunzheng asked the mountain bandit, “Does the neighboring county also have such a secret passage that leads directly inside?”

“No,” the bandit said. “We plan to attack directly from outside the city gates.”

Attack from outside the city gates? All the county towns were heavily guarded now, but manpower was indeed insufficient. Still, plenty of people would certainly be stationed at the gates. If the mountain bandits concentrated on attacking one gate, the soldiers would inevitably suffer heavy losses.

In Chenggu County, the damage was from within, so both the soldiers and authorities had few casualties.

Of course, that was because the Chenggu County authorities were already on their side.

The different approach to the neighboring county was because the neighboring county… hadn’t been turned by the Second Prince and them yet?

As they talked, they had walked quite some distance when Meng Yunzheng suddenly noticed another fork in the path. His lips tightened, and he asked, “Can the black market lead to another path?”

“Yes, this one leads to…” The mountain bandit hesitated, reminded of the poison he’d taken, and said with some reluctance, “Leads to the private residence of the Chenggu County magistrate.”
