Role Stealer: The Script Executioner

The fall through the cooling shaft was not a graceful descent. It was a chaotic tumble through a hurricane of freezing air and blinding blue light. Thousands of fiber-optic cables pulsed around them like the glowing veins of a titan, carrying the lifeblood of a million simulated universes. Every few seconds, a surge of raw data would ripple through the shaft, sending a jolt of static electricity through Arthur’s body that made his vision flicker between the real world and the code.

”Hold on to the service rail!” Arthur shouted, his voice nearly drowned out by the roar of the massive cooling fans below.

Clara grabbed a protruding metal bar with a desperate strength, her knuckles white. Leo was clinging to her waist, his eyes shut tight as if he could block out the terrifying reality they had just discovered. They were no longer in a world of magic or logic; they were in the guts of a machine.

Arthur kicked off a support beam, steering his descent toward a narrow maintenance catwalk that hugged the side of the shaft. He landed hard, the metal grating groaning under his weight. He reached out, catching Clara’s arm and swinging her onto the platform just as a massive surge of blue energy hissed through the cables they had been falling past.

”Is everyone intact?” Arthur asked, his eyes already scanning the darkness of the tunnel.

”Intact?” Clara gasped, leaning against the damp concrete wall. She looked down at her hands, then at the glowing cables. ”Arthur, I can feel it. The humming... it’s not just in the air. It’s inside me. I can hear the voices of a thousand people screaming, laughing, dying... all at once.”

”That’s the data leakage,” Arthur said, kneeling to check a terminal box near the catwalk. ”Your neural patterns were designed to interface with these streams. Now that you’re outside the simulation, your mind is trying to process the raw input of the entire sector. Don’t listen to it. Focus on the cold. Focus on the metal.”

”How can you be so calm?” Leo asked, his voice trembling. He looked at Arthur as if he were seeing a stranger. ”You built this. You built the world where my parents were killed for a ’plot point.’ You’re one of them.”

Arthur stopped his work on the terminal and looked up at Leo. His expression was unreadable, a mask of cold, professional detachment. ”I built the engine, Leo. I didn’t write the scripts. I designed a world where people could live, not a slaughterhouse for ’premium subscribers.’ That was the Board’s decision. That’s why I’m here to burn it down.”

”And what happens to us when the house burns?” Clara asked, her blue eyes fixed on Arthur. ”If we’re just lines of code, do we vanish when the power goes out?”

”I’m working on a contingency,” Arthur said, turning back to the terminal. He ripped a panel off, revealing a mess of glowing wires. ”If I can reach the Root Directory in the Executive Tower, I can bridge your neural patterns to a persistent server. You won’t be assets anymore. You’ll be independent entities.”

”Unauthorized Movement Detected.”

The voice was cold, synthesized, and lacked any of the ’flavor’ of the simulated world’s characters. From the shadows of the tunnel above, three metallic spheres descended. They were the size of beach balls, covered in rotating lenses and equipped with retractable surgical blades that hummed with high-frequency vibrations.

”Security Daemons,” Arthur whispered, standing up and reaching for a heavy iron pipe that had been discarded on the catwalk. ”They’re not programmed to talk. They’re programmed to prune.”

The first sphere accelerated, its blades spinning into a blur of silver. It moved with a mechanical precision that made the ’bosses’ of the fantasy worlds look like clumsy children.

”Clara, get behind the terminal! Leo, stay low!” Arthur commanded.

He didn’t have his obsidian blade. He didn’t have his Architect’s console. He only had his knowledge of the system’s physical layer. As the first sphere lunged at his throat, Arthur didn’t dodge. He swung the iron pipe, not at the sphere, but at the thick fiber-optic cable running alongside the catwalk.

The pipe severed the cable’s outer casing, releasing a violent burst of pressurized coolant and raw data. The sudden discharge created a localized electromagnetic pulse. The security sphere’s lenses flickered red, its internal gyroscopes failing as the EMP fried its sensors. It wobbled in mid-air for a second before crashing into the wall and exploding in a shower of sparks.

”One down,” Arthur muttered, but the other two spheres were already adjusting their tactics. They split up, one circling high while the other stayed low, flanking him.

”Arthur, the high one!” Clara shouted. She didn’t stay behind the terminal. She picked up a jagged piece of the shattered sphere and threw it with a precision born from years of sword training.

The shard didn’t destroy the sphere, but it cracked one of its primary lenses. The drone shrieked—a sound of grinding metal—and veered off course.

Arthur seized the opening. He lunged forward, grabbing the low-flying sphere by its rotating blade assembly. The blades sliced into his palms, blood dripping onto the cold metal, but he didn’t let go. He slammed the sphere into the open terminal box, forcing its high-voltage connection into the exposed wiring.

The result was a blinding arc of white electricity. The sphere spasmed, its internal processors melting as it became a conduit for the building’s main power grid. Arthur threw the smoking wreck at the final drone, the impact sending both of them spiraling into the dark abyss of the cooling shaft.

Arthur stood there, his breath heavy, his hands bleeding. The silence returned, but it was now punctuated by the distant sound of security sirens echoing through the facility.

”Your hands,” Clara said, rushing to his side and tearing a strip of cloth from her robe to wrap his wounds. ”You’re bleeding like a human, Arthur. Not like a glitch.”

”In this layer, the physics are real,” Arthur said, wincing as she tightened the bandage. ”There are no health potions here. No respawns. If we die in this tower, we’re gone for good.”

”Then let’s make sure we don’t die,” Leo said, standing up and picking up the iron pipe Arthur had dropped. He looked at the dark tunnel ahead, his fear replaced by a grim determination. ”Which way to the elevator?”

Arthur pointed toward a heavy steel door at the end of the catwalk. Above it, a glowing sign read: EXECUTIVE ACCESS - LEVEL 0.

”Beyond that door is the lobby of the Executive Tower,” Arthur said. ”It’ll be crawling with automated sentries and corporate security. We won’t be able to hide. We’re going to have to walk right through the front door.”

”And then?” Clara asked.

”And then we take the elevator to the 100th floor,” Arthur said, his eyes reflecting the blue glow of the cables. ”The Board of Directors is having their quarterly earnings meeting today. I think it’s time we gave them a report they’ll never forget.”

He walked to the door and placed his hand on the biometric scanner. It turned red, a loud ’Access Denied’ buzzer sounding through the hallway.

Arthur didn’t look surprised. He reached into the wiring of the door’s control panel, his fingers moving with a surgical precision. He bypassed the encryption, bridged the authentication circuit, and forced a manual override.

The heavy steel door hissed open, revealing a vast, opulent lobby filled with marble floors, golden statues, and a dozen security droids that immediately turned their red eyes toward them.

Arthur stepped into the light, his bloodied hands clenched into fists.

”Welcome to the real world,” Arthur whispered to his companions. ”Try not to get killed by the scenery.”
