HP: I AM SHERLOCK HOLMES

The moment Dumbledore spoke of Voldemort’s return, the Great Hall erupted into a storm of hushed voices.

It was a strange thing. News of this magnitude—enough to overturn the entire wizarding world should have struck like a stone hurled into still water, sending great waves crashing outward.

Yet the sheer terror that ”He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named” commanded seemed to work in reverse. None of the young witches and wizards had ever laid eyes on him, but from childhood, his fearsome name had been woven into them by the elders around them, winding through their hearts like a vine.

Even now, no one dared speak of him the way they would any other shocking headline.

Everyone whispered. Only whispered.

It looked distinctly, unsettlingly strange.

Of course, those who had known what was coming beforehand remained quite composed. Harry simply closed his hand slowly into a fist.

Having grown up in the Muggle world, he had never absorbed the bone-deep dread of Voldemort the way the others had. After facing him more than once, what Harry felt now was something closer to hatred. Hearing Dumbledore’s words, he felt something like relief—the relief of a truth finally spoken aloud.

At last.

Hermione and Gemma, Ron and Ginny, Luna and Cho exchanged glances in the same moment. Each pair read the same expression in the other’s eyes: just as we expected.

The students from Beauxbatons and Durmstrang were visibly less shaken than their Hogwarts counterparts—particularly the Durmstrang students. Yet their headmaster, Karkaroff, looked wretched. His face, already pale at the best of times, had drained to the colour of chalk. He seemed hollowed out, as though something vital had been taken from him.

Sherlock’s gaze swept quickly across the Great Hall, cataloguing every face, every flicker of expression. In this single moment, he came to understand—more deeply than before—just how long Voldemort’s shadow fell across the wizarding world.

The news had struck the crowd hard.

As a man who had lived through the Victorian era, two world wars, and the reign of Elizabeth II, Albus Dumbledore understood that shadow better than almost anyone. So, he stood quietly, watching patiently, and made no move to silence the Hall.

After a long while, the whispers faded. One by one, people fell still. Even the Weasley twins straightened in their seats. Every eye in the room locked onto Dumbledore, waiting.

”You have recovered your composure,” Dumbledore said, a note of warm approval in his voice, ”rather more quickly than I expected.”

He paused.

”This tells me I was right to tell you the truth. I should mention that not everyone will see it that way—not only the Ministry, but perhaps some of your parents as well. Some will be shocked by my decision.

Perhaps they cannot bring themselves to believe that Voldemort has truly returned, for there are many witches and wizards who clung stubbornly to the belief that he would never rise again. Perhaps they will feel I had no right to burden you with this—that you are still too young.”

He paused again, and when his gaze swept across the young faces before him, his voice became firm.

”But if we refuse to look clearly at what is before us—if we bury our heads in the sand like ostriches and pretend none of this is happening—we will not only fail to improve our situation. We will invite a danger beyond imagination. The truth, told plainly, is always better than a comfortable lie.”

At those words, Fudge and Bagman exchanged an uneasy glance.

Fudge, in particular, felt the sting of it—Dumbledore had stopped just short of pointing at him by name. Burying one’s head in the sand like an ostrich. Hadn’t the young Sherlock Holmes used precisely those words to describe him, that night? He had dismissed the boy as impudent and ignorant of propriety.

He understood now. The fool, it turned out, had been himself.

The same words landed differently in different ears. When Hermione heard them, she lifted her head sharply—and she and Gemma turned to look at Sherlock at the exact same moment.

Hermione’s lips curved in a quiet, knowing smile, mischief dancing in her eyes. Gemma pressed her own smile back, blinking once, slow and deliberate.

Both of them looked at Sherlock with gazes soft as sunlight, warm enough to feel.

”What is it?” Sherlock asked, catching the weight of two pairs of eyes on him. He turned to look at them.

Hermione’s hair fell loose over her shoulders, her amusement carefully tucked behind her expression. Gemma quickly dropped her gaze—but couldn’t quite stop her shoulders from shaking.

Neither answered him. Both turned promptly back toward the front.

Sherlock found himself entirely at a loss.

What on earth were these two doing?

But the smiles at the corners of their mouths were like buds in early spring—impossible to contain now, quietly blooming open. Because in that moment, they had both thought, of something Sherlock had once said:

”In the vast majority of circumstances, I do not lie—unless it becomes necessary.”

Dumbledore’s words, in their own way, had arrived at the same place—without the second half.

The girls’ wandering thoughts were cut short by Dumbledore’s voice.

”In speaking of Voldemort, I find I must also speak of someone else.”

The Hall fell silent in an instant. Hundreds of eyes snapped back to him.

Dumbledore spoke slowly, each word carrying clearly to the farthest corner of the room:

”I refer, of course, to Sherlock Holmes—the Lion King, in whom wisdom and courage are one.”

It was not just Hermione and Gemma who were moved now.

The moment Dumbledore spoke Sherlock’s name in that formal, deliberate way, a fresh wave of murmuring broke through the Hall. The tension that had gathered around Voldemort’s return cracked slightly—heads turned toward the spot where Sherlock sat, then quickly swung back to Dumbledore. Everyone was waiting for more.

Sherlock himself raised an eyebrow, something curious passing through his grey eyes.

Was Dumbledore finally setting the record straight?

It made sense. Voldemort now knew that his plans had unraveled because of Sherlock. There was no longer any purpose in concealment. Better to lay everything bare—let everyone understand precisely what Hogwarts was capable of. To rally courage. To lift spirits.

Yes. That would be worth doing.

”Sherlock Holmes identified Voldemort’s plan before anyone else.”

The words landed like a spark. Gasps broke out across the Hall. People turned to their neighbors with wide eyes. Snape looked at Sherlock for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Cornelius Fudge’s gaze was, if anything, even harder to parse.

This time, Dumbledore did not let the wave build. He raised both hands and gently pressed it down. Then he looked at Sherlock, and spoke in a tone of open, unhurried admiration:

”Holmes demonstrated, throughout these events, a quality of mind that surpasses his peers—and indeed surpasses many grown witches and wizards. It was his warning that came first. It was his judgment that identified, with precision, how Voldemort intended to use the Triwizard Tournament against us.

Because of his counsel, we were not caught unprepared when a newly restored Voldemort moved against us. And more than that—with the advantage of foreknowledge, we fought, and we won. Voldemort was driven back. His Death Eaters were sent where they belong: Azkaban.”

A wave of sound surged through the Hall.

The celebration that followed was like a dam breaking—cheering, gasps of astonishment, fists pounding on tables, figures leaning halfway out of their seats to look toward Gryffindor. Even the parents in attendance were leaning together, speaking in urgent, excited undertones.

Voldemort had… fled?

There were still those who harboured doubts—who wondered if Dumbledore was painting a rosier picture than truth allowed. This did sound, taken baldly, rather extraordinary.

But the vast majority were alight.

This was Dumbledore.

Harry Potter might be the one Voldemort had marked as his equal. But Albus Dumbledore was the one Voldemort had always feared.

To hear that the Dark Lord had been routed—from Dumbledore’s own lips—was enough to turn dread into something fiercer and warmer.

Dumbledore had to raise his voice to be heard over it all.

”And it was not only his mind. When the moment came—when Voldemort himself stood before him—Holmes showed a steadiness of nerve and a depth of courage that even seasoned adult wizards rarely manage in the presence of such terror. Without him, I believe a number of those sitting in this Hall tonight would not be here to share this meal. The Great Detective Holmes has more than earned his name. Sherlock the Brilliant is beyond question.”

He looked out across the Hall.

”And so I ask you all to rise and raise your glasses to Sherlock Holmes.”

Dumbledore lifted his goblet first.

A great rustling followed—benches scraping, robes shifting, the entire Hall rising as one. Hogwarts students, Beauxbatons visitors, Durmstrang guests, parents and champions alike—all lifted their goblets.

Together, in one low, resonant voice, they said:

”To Sherlock Holmes.”

Even the Slytherins—those who had privately nursed a measure of resentment toward him—put that aside now and raised their cups in earnest. Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle among them. Malfoy, in particular, watched Sherlock with an expression that was difficult to read, something turning over behind his eyes.

Hermione and Gemma looked at each other. Neither of them made any effort to hide how pleased they were.

Hermione leaned toward Sherlock and murmured, ”Did you know he was going to do this? That he’d say it all aloud, in front of everyone?”

Sherlock shook his head, something like genuine surprise in his eyes. ”No.”

He hadn’t expected Dumbledore to clear his name so openly. He certainly hadn’t expected to be elevated quite so conspicuously.

But now that it had happened, he understood the logic.

After all, he hadn’t been the only one there when Voldemort returned. Harry Potter—the wizarding world’s chosen savior, the one person Voldemort had originally set his sights on—had been the true target all along. Sherlock himself had been a secondary concern, someone to be dealt with in passing.

Yet Dumbledore had, quite deliberately, diminished Harry’s role in the telling—and amplified Sherlock’s. He was pushing Sherlock into the light. Making him a focal point. Giving Voldemort a new name to fixate on.

The thought drew a quiet smile from Sherlock.

This suited him rather well.

From this moment on, whether or not he stood at Harry’s side, he would be a figure at the center of the storm in his own right. Wasn’t that precisely what he had wanted—from the very beginning of his entry into the wizarding world—when he had worked so carefully to draw closer to Harry Potter?

He had never imagined that the one to finally make it happen would be Voldemort himself.

More danger, certainly. But also more interest. And more importantly—in some measure, at least—this would take some of the weight off Harry’s shoulders. Let him breathe for a moment, free from the crushing pressure of being the savior.

Harry Potter was the wizarding world’s chosen one. He was also Sherlock’s friend.

Once everyone had settled back into their seats, Dumbledore continued:

”I said at the start of the year that the purpose of the Triwizard Tournament was to foster understanding and strengthen the bonds between our magical communities—to encourage witches and wizards of different nations and different schools to set aside suspicion and learn to trust one another. Given what has now come to pass—given Voldemort’s return—those bonds matter more than they have ever mattered before.”

His gaze moved slowly around the room.

He inclined his head toward Madame Maxime, seated beside Hagrid. Then he turned to Karkaroff, whose color remained poor, but who managed a thin, strained attempt at a smile. Then to the Beauxbatons students clustered near the Ravenclaw table. Then to the Durmstrang students beside Slytherin.

His expression was open, unhurried, genuine—like early spring sunlight:

”Every guest in this Hall is welcome at Hogwarts, whenever they choose to return. I say again, as I say now: we are strong only when we stand together. Divided, we are nothing. Voldemort is powerful—but what he does best is sow division. He turns us against one another. The only answer to that is a unity just as unshakeable—a friendship and a trust that cannot be broken. With a shared purpose and an open heart, no difference of custom or language need ever come between us.”

Everyone understood the gentle implication behind custom and language. He meant Beauxbatons and Durmstrang.

Dumbledore paused, then added:

”While I have your attention, there is one more matter I wish to announce.”

What—another one?

A ripple of surprise ran through the Hall. People glanced at their neighbours.

From the recognition of the Tournament’s champions and the awarding of the House Cup, to the declaration of Voldemort’s return, to the toast in Sherlock’s honor—Dumbledore had already delivered more shocks in one evening than most years produced in total. And now there was to be one more?

A hush fell over the Hall again—curious, a little apprehensive—as everyone waited for what came next.
