Deus Necros

Miraless looked at Kaiser.

Then she looked down at her own body.

Her hands rested in her lap, fragile and cracked, the fingers too thin, the skin lined like old parchment stretched over glass. The fractures along her face caught the light from the pond, making her look less like an elf and more like some sacred statue that had been broken, repaired badly, then forced to keep ruling through pride alone.

For a long moment, she said nothing.

Lorina stood beside her, tense enough that even her breathing seemed careful. The guards remained with weapons half-raised. The World Tree pulsed quietly around them, its immense presence filling the upper sanctum with a life so dense it made every silence feel watched.

Finally, Miraless sighed.

”Do your worst then.”

Kaiser smiled.

It was not comforting.

”It won’t be pretty.”

He lifted his red finger.

The finger looked wrong against the pale, noble shape he wore. His face was that of a refined young aristocrat, delicate and faintly mocking, but that finger belonged to something else. The former Lich King Ashkar. Red, old, and vile in a way that had nothing to do with color alone. At first, it seemed merely mismatched. Then it moved.

The finger wriggled like a worm.

No, like a leech.

The guards recoiled before they could stop themselves. Lorina’s face tightened with disgust. Ludwig watched with narrowed eyes as Kaiser leaned forward and pressed that red finger against the back of Miraless’s palm.

The reaction was immediate.

Purple darkness spread beneath the Queen’s skin.

It rushed out from the point of contact, branching through the veins of her hand, then up her wrist and forearm like ink poured into living glass. It was not pure dark magic, not exactly. There was corruption in it, but controlled. Thin. Directed. Hungry in a way that had been forced onto a leash.

Miraless groaned.

Her free hand clenched around the armrest of her chair. The old wood cracked faintly beneath her grip.

The guards moved.

”Stop,” Miraless said.

The word came out strained, but it carried enough command to halt every elf in the sanctum.

They froze.

Lorina took a step forward anyway, then stopped herself with visible effort. Her eyes did not leave her mother’s face.

Miraless gritted her teeth. ”So your... solution is to exhaust the excessive vitality.”

”Yes,” Kaiser said, voice sharper now. ”Let me focus. I can’t take too much or you’ll really die.”

The purple spread continued.

Miraless’s body, already old, began to look older.

That was the cruelest part.

To anyone watching, this did not look like healing. It looked like murder dressed in magic. Her skin darkened at the edges. The frail flesh of her arm shrank further, then the decay crawled upward beneath the skin, up to her shoulder, along the side of her neck, and across part of her face. Thin purple vine-like marks spread under her cheeks and around her jaw. Her body shuddered, and her breath came in shallow pulls.

Lorina could not keep watching.

Her hand rose.

Not all the way. Not enough to form a spell. But enough that Ludwig noticed.

So did Kaiser.

Miraless noticed too.

The Queen did not look at her daughter, but something in her expression hardened. A silent command. An old ruler’s refusal. A mother’s warning not to interfere with the pain she had chosen.

Lorina’s hand lowered.

Ludwig remained still.

He saw it.

Beneath the ugliness, beneath the decay, beneath the purple corruption eating through the excessive life tangled in Miraless’s body, something else was happening. The fractures across her skin were beginning to mend. The porcelain cracks along her face and hands, the signs of time and body failing to agree with each other, were slowly closing. It looked like treating poison with another poison. Awful. Dangerous. Possibly insane.

But it was working.

Kaiser’s expression had changed as well. The mockery was gone. His brows were drawn slightly together, his mouth pressed into a thin line. The red finger pulsed against Miraless’s hand, drawing out something Ludwig could not see directly but could feel as a pressure in the air. Too much life. Too much longevity poured into a body whose time had been stolen and returned wrong. Kaiser was not healing her in the pretty sense. He was stealing the excess before it could keep suffocating her.

Minutes passed.

They felt like hours.

Miraless’s hair began to fall.

Gray strands slipped loose and scattered across her shoulders, then onto the floor, until patches of her scalp showed beneath what remained. Her limbs became emaciated. Her eyes sank deep into her skull. Her ears drooped, losing their elegant shape. Wrinkles multiplied across her face, not fine lines of age but deep folds of brutal exhaustion. The powerful Elven Queen became, for a terrible moment, something closer to a corpse that had not yet received permission to lie down.

Lorina made a small sound.

Ludwig did not know if it was grief or restraint.

Then the purple stopped spreading.

Kaiser exhaled.

”Should be good now.”

He pulled back what he had pushed into Miraless’s body.

The vine-like corruption withdrew in reverse, sliding from her face, neck, shoulder, and arm, retreating beneath the skin until it gathered at the point where his finger touched her hand. Then it vanished into the red finger, and Kaiser broke contact.

For a heartbeat, nothing changed.

Miraless sat in the chair, no longer cracked like porcelain, but worse in another way. Like a broken old jar emptied and left beneath the sun. Her face sagged. Her hands were skeletal. Her body looked too weak to hold even the weight of her robes.

The guards looked horrified.

Lorina looked shattered.

Then the World Tree breathed.

The pulse that moved through the chamber was not sound, though Ludwig felt it in his bones. Green-gold light flowed down through the roots around the sanctum, through the living floor, through the chair, and into Miraless. The pond of longevity trembled, its surface rippling without touch. The old Queen’s body responded.

Color returned first.

The pale, deathly tone of her skin warmed. The sunken hollows of her cheeks began to fill. Her thin lips softened. Silver hair grew from her scalp in a rush, pouring down her shoulders like moonlight turned to silk. The wrinkles smoothed, not vanishing into unnatural youth, but settling into the faint grace of someone ancient who no longer needed to look broken to prove she had survived. Her limbs regained shape. Her back straightened. Her ears lifted again, sharp and elegant.

In moments, Elven Queen Miraless sat whole.

Not young in the human sense.

Not old in the ruined sense.

Beautiful, powerful, and terribly alive.

Lorina covered her mouth with both hands.

The guards lowered their weapons slowly, awe stealing away the last of their suspicion.

Miraless lifted her hands and stared at her palms. They no longer looked like an old crone’s hands. Long, elegant fingers flexed carefully, as if she were discovering them again after a bad dream.

Kaiser rolled his shoulder. ”Good. This might have shaved a couple hundred years off your life. Not that you’ll complain. You already lived too damn much.”

Miraless looked at him.

A smile touched her lips.

”It is much better than being dead, I can tell you that.”

Ludwig leaned slightly toward Kaiser. ”How did you do that?”

”Ah,” Kaiser said, as if he had done something simple and not just performed a surgical miracle with cursed theft magic in the heart of elven sacred ground. ”I corrupted a portion of the Serene Water.”

Lorina’s eyes widened. ”You what?”

”Relax. A small portion. Like I said, you drowned her in the damn thing. Even a long-lived elf can’t handle too much of that. Life is not automatically good just because priests and poets keep praising it.” Kaiser pointed at Miraless. ”After I removed the excess, her...”

He glanced toward the World Tree.

Then sighed.

”Husband finished the rest.”

Ludwig looked up. ”The World Tree?”

”Yes,” Kaiser said. ”Nature’s vitality. The elves’ source of long life. As long as this tree stands, they’ll live pretty long, boring lives.”

”That was almost respectful.”

”I can be respectful.”

”No, you can’t.”

”I can be accurate, which is better.”

Miraless rose slowly from the chair.

Lorina moved forward immediately to help her, but Miraless lifted a hand, stopping her with a gentle look. Then the Elven Queen stood on her own.

For the first time since Ludwig had arrived in the upper sanctum, Lorina looked like she might cry.

Miraless opened her arms.

That was enough.

Lorina stepped into the embrace carefully at first, still afraid, still haunted by the memory of a mother who could break beneath touch. But Miraless held her firmly. Not like porcelain. Not like a dying relic. Like a mother. Lorina’s composure failed for one brief second, her face pressing into Miraless’s shoulder.

The guards turned their eyes away.

Ludwig did the same.

Kaiser did not, but Kaiser was Kaiser.

After a while, Miraless released her daughter and turned back to Kaiser.

”You seem to have fixed your ways, lich.”

Kaiser gave her an offended look. ”You say that like an insult. That’s a compliment, you know.”

”Is it?”

”Obviously. Lich is a title earned through talent, cruelty, genius, and poor social adjustment. Very exclusive.”

Ludwig rubbed his forehead. ”He’s like this all the time.”

”I gathered.”

Miraless looked down at herself once more, then toward the pond, then toward the vast living walls of the World Tree. She seemed to breathe more deeply than before, and the entire sanctum subtly answered. Leaves overhead shimmered. Roots shifted faintly. Somewhere far below, the hidden elven kingdom seemed to stir without knowing why.

Then the Elven Queen smiled.

”Good then,” she said. ”Now that I can actually show my face, how about a small banquet?”

Lorina blinked. ”Mother?”

Miraless’s smile sharpened, and in that expression Ludwig finally saw the ruler she had once been before Envy, before petrification, before the pond, before stolen time and excessive life turned her into a living relic.

”What?” Miraless asked. ”Would you prefer I return from near-death quietly? Nonsense. The kingdom should know its Queen is awake.”

Kaiser smirked. ”I like her better already.”

Miraless pointed at him without looking. ”You are not invited to steal anything.”

”I was not going to.”

Everyone looked at him.

Kaiser sighed. ”Fine. I was going to consider it.”

Ludwig looked at Lorina. ”Is every royal family like this, or is this just my luck?”

Lorina wiped at one eye quickly, then smiled despite herself. ”I think it might be you.”

”That’s rude.”

”Accurate, though.” Lorina smiled.

Kaiser snapped his fingers. ”See? Better than respectful.”

Miraless took one step forward, testing her strength. The World Tree’s light pulsed softly around her, no longer force-feeding life into a broken vessel, but answering its Queen as it should have from the beginning. The fractures were gone. The mismatch had settled. Time had not fully returned what Envy had stolen, not perfectly, but it had stopped tearing her apart.

Lorina looked between them, then to Kaiser. Her expression was complicated, gratitude wrapped around old fear and fresh suspicion.

”Thank you,” she said.

Kaiser looked uncomfortable.

Ludwig stared at him with interest.

Kaiser clicked his tongue. ”Do not make a habit of saying that to me.”

”I will not.”

”Good.”

Miraless turned toward the guards. ”Inform the lower sanctums. No alarm. No panic. Tell the stewards to prepare a banquet.”

One guard bowed deeply, still shaken. ”Your Majesty, should we summon the council?”

Miraless’s smile became regal enough to make the question feel small.

”Summon everyone who needs to remember who rules here.”

The guard swallowed. ”At once.”

As the elves hurried away, Ludwig looked toward the pond again. The sacred water shimmered peacefully, innocent in the way dangerous things often appeared once the damage was done.

He had come to the elven forest for answers about a dragon’s curse.

Instead, Kaiser had repaired an ancient queen, offended a sacred tree, and somehow earned gratitude without stealing anything obvious.

For Ludwig, that almost counted as a calm visit.

Almost.
