Rin remained on the balcony long after the others had gone to sleep.

His hand was still warm from Kaelith’s. He looked down at it.

Then at the night sky. Then back at his hand.

”...What am I doing?”

He sighed.

He had spent an unreasonable amount of time trying to solve ancient mysteries and somehow, the thing occupying his mind most right now was the fact that he had willingly held Kaelith’s hand.

That was ridiculous. He had survived curses. Gods. Ancient ruins. Strange memories.

A System that seemed determined to give him more problems than answers.

And yet somehow—

holding Kaelith’s hand had made him nervous. Rin covered his face.

”This is embarrassing.”

A quiet laugh came from beside him.

Rin froze. He slowly turned. Kaelith was still there.

”You heard that?”

”Yes.”

”How long have you been standing there?”

”Long enough.”

Rin groaned.

”I thought you left.”

”I was going to.”

”And?”

Kaelith looked at him.

”I changed my mind.”

Rin’s heart skipped.

”Why?”

Kaelith shrugged.

”I didn’t feel like leaving yet.”

Rin looked away.

”You’re making this difficult.”

”How?”

”You keep saying things that...”

He stopped.

”Things that what?”

Rin shook his head.

”Nothing.”

Kaelith smiled.

”Alright.”

They stood together again. This time, neither spoke and somehow, the silence felt comfortable.

Eventually, Rin returned to his room. He closed the door. Locked it.

Then immediately walked toward his desk. The ancient record was still there.

The parchment. The notes. The strange symbol. And the crystal.

Rin picked up the crystal. It remained completely dark. He turned it over.

Nothing. He tapped it.

Nothing. He stared at it.

”Are you finished being mysterious?”

Nothing.

”Fine.”

He put it down.

Then—

Ding.

Rin froze.

The sound came from somewhere behind him.

Not from the crystal. Not from the System.

The bell. His ability. Someone had lied.

Rin slowly turned around. The room was empty. His expression changed.

”...What?”

He waited. Nothing.

Rin looked toward the door. Nobody.

He looked toward the window. Nothing.

The bell had sounded but he hadn’t heard anyone speak.

That was impossible. Unless... Someone had lied somewhere nearby.

Not to him. Not necessarily. The bell didn’t care whether the lie was directed at him.

It only told him that a false statement had been spoken. Rin’s eyes narrowed.

He quietly opened the door. The corridor was empty.

He stepped outside. Nothing.

Then he heard footsteps. Rin immediately stepped back into the shadows.

A servant walked through the corridor carrying a tray.

Rin waited. The servant stopped near another door.

A voice came from inside.

”Did you finish the report?”

”Yes.”

Ding.

Rin’s eyes widened.

The servant had lied.

But why? He listened. The door opened. An older soldier stepped outside.

”You finished everything?”

”Yes.”

Ding.

Another lie. Rin frowned. The soldier looked around.

”Good. Then go to sleep.”

The servant nodded. They walked away. Rin remained in the shadows.

Something was wrong. The bell had sounded twice.

Both statements had been lies but they weren’t important enough to explain why.

Maybe the servant hadn’t finished the report. Maybe the soldier knew. Maybe it was something completely unrelated.

Rin didn’t know. And he wasn’t going to interfere without a reason.

He returned to his room but he couldn’t sleep anymore.

The following morning, Rin looked exhausted.

Sol noticed immediately.

”You didn’t sleep.”

Rin picked up his cup.

”I slept.”

Sol stared at him. Rin looked away.

”...A little.”

Sol sighed.

”What happened?”

”Nothing.”

Sol genuinely didn’t know what was wrong.

Rin smiled.

”I’m fine.”

Sol shook his head.

”You’re terrible at pretending.”

Rin laughed.

”You said that yesterday.”

”And I’ll say it tomorrow.”

”You’re annoying.”

”Eat.”

Rin looked at his plate.

”Why does everyone keep telling me to eat?”

”Because you forget.”

”I don’t.”

Sol gave him a look. Rin picked up his fork.

”Fine.”

Across the table, Vorak was attempting to stack bread into a tower. Selena watched him.

”Why?”

”Architecture.”

”That’s not architecture.”

”It could be.”

Lucien didn’t even look up from his report.

”Please don’t encourage him.”

Noctis quietly drank his tea. Rin smiled. This was normal. Simple. Comfortable. He liked it.

Then Kaelith entered. Rin looked up. Their eyes met.

Kaelith smiled slightly. Rin immediately looked down at his plate.

Sol noticed. He said nothing.

After breakfast, Rin went to the library. He wanted to investigate the curse without getting distracted.

That lasted about five minutes. Kaelith entered. Rin looked up.

”You again.”

”You say that every time.”

”Because you’re always here.”

”I could leave.”

Rin immediately shook his head.

”No.”

Kaelith smiled.

”Then I’ll stay.”

Rin looked back at his papers.

”Good.”

Kaelith sat beside him.

”What are you researching?”

”The curse.”

”Anything?”

”Not yet.”

Rin pushed several books toward him.

”These are records of ancient divine curses.”

Kaelith opened one.

”Most of these are useless.”

”Yes.”

”Why are you keeping them?”

”Because I don’t know which ones are useless.”

Kaelith nodded.

”Fair.”

They worked quietly. For almost an hour, nothing happened. Then Rin found something.

He stopped.

”Wait.”

Kaelith looked over.

”What?”

Rin pointed to the page. There was an old description of a particular type of curse.

A curse of severance.

Rin read aloud.

”A curse designed to separate two connected souls...”

Kaelith became still. Rin continued.

”...may cause memory loss, spiritual fragmentation, or forced reincarnation.”

Rin’s fingers tightened around the page.

”Fragmentation.”

Kaelith looked at him.

”That word.”

”Yes.”

Rin remembered the strange feeling Kaelith sometimes had.

The dreams. The missing memories. The sensation that something was absent.

Rin read further.

”The curse may be imposed upon one soul or divided between both.”

Then the text became damaged. Rin frowned.

”Of course.”

Kaelith leaned closer.

”Can you read the next part?”

”No.”

He turned the page. Nothing. The next page was missing.

Rin sighed.

”Someone removed it.”

Kaelith looked at the torn edge.

”Recently?”

Rin examined it.

”I don’t know.”

The paper was too old but the tear looked deliberate.

Not natural. Rin frowned.

”Why would someone remove only this page?”

Rin closed the book.

”Another question. Add it to the list.”

Rin smiled.

”I already have so many...”

They continued searching. Eventually Selena joined them. She carried several ancient documents.

”I found something you might want.”

Rin looked up.

”What?”

Selena placed a thin book on the table.

”This was stored with records about divine curses.”

Rin opened it. The title had almost disappeared. But underneath was a handwritten note.

Severance curses are rarely created by enemies.

Rin frowned.

”That’s strange.”

Selena nodded.

”It gets stranger.”

She pointed lower.

They are most often created by someone who believes separation will save the people involved.

Rin went still. His mother’s words came back.

I have to stop it.

He slowly whispered:

”She wasn’t trying to punish someone.”

Selena looked at him.

”Maybe not.”

Rin looked at Kaelith. Kaelith was reading the page. His expression was difficult to read.

Rin asked:

”Could a severance curse remove someone’s memories?”

Selena nodded.

”According to this, yes.”

”And fragment a soul?”

”Possibly.”

Rin’s chest tightened. He remembered Kaelith saying:

I feel like I’ve forgotten something.

Rin looked away. He didn’t want to jump to conclusions. This was only a possibility.

Nothing more. That afternoon, Rin went to the training grounds. He needed to clear his head.

Vorak was already there.

”Fight me.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”I’m tired.”

”Then I’ll go easy.”

”No.”

”I’ll let you hit me.”

”No.”

”I’ll stand still.”

”Vorak.”

”Yes?”

”You’re terrible at convincing people.”

Vorak laughed. Rin sighed.

”Fine.”

He picked up a wooden sword. They began training. For several minutes, it was normal.

Vorak attacked. Rin dodged. Rin attacked. Vorak blocked.

Then Rin suddenly stopped. He felt something. A faint pressure. Behind him.

He turned. Nothing.

”Rin?”

”I’m fine.”

Vorak looked confused.

”What?”

”Nothing.”

Rin lowered his sword. The pressure disappeared. He looked toward the forest beyond the training grounds.

For a second, he thought he heard something.

A whisper. Very faint.

”Come back...”

Rin froze. Vorak looked at him.

”Did you hear that?”

Rin turned.

”What?”

Vorak frowned.

”I thought I heard something.”

Rin’s heart beat faster. So it wasn’t only him but the voice was gone.

Rin looked toward the forest again. Nothing.

”Probably the wind.”

Vorak shrugged.

”Probably.”

Rin didn’t believe that but he didn’t know what else it could be.

That evening, Rin returned to the library alone. He opened his notebook. His list had grown.

What was the curse?

Who created it?

Why was it created?

What bond was broken?

Who was chosen?

Why did Aelion appear afterward?

Rin stared at the last question. Then he added another.

What does ”fragmentation” mean?

He put down his pen. He thought about Kaelith. The strange dreams. The missing memories. The sensation of something being absent.

Could the curse have affected him?

Maybe but Rin refused to assume.

He needed proof. Then he noticed something.

The crystal. It was glowing again.

Rin stood. The light was faint. Almost like a heartbeat.

He approached it.

”Are you going to show me something this time?”

The crystal pulsed. A voice whispered.

Not through the System. A real voice.

”He is still waiting.”

Rin froze.

”Who?”

Silence. Rin stepped closer.

”Who is waiting?”

The crystal pulsed again.

”The one you promised.”

Rin’s heart stopped.

”What promise?”

Nothing. The crystal went dark.

Rin stood completely still. The words echoed in his mind.

The one you promised.

He didn’t know who that was. He didn’t know what promise had been made but for the first time, the mystery felt personal. Not because someone had told him the answer.

Because something had reminded him that somewhere in his forgotten past...there had been a promise.

And someone was still waiting for it to be fulfilled. Rin didn’t tell anyone about the voice.

He wasn’t sure whether it had been real. He wasn’t sure whether the crystal had spoken. He wasn’t even sure whether the voice belonged to a person.

So he kept it to himself. For now.

He closed the notebook. Then he heard footsteps.

Kaelith.

Rin looked up.

”You really like finding me in libraries.”

Kaelith smiled.

”You really like hiding in them.”

”Maybe.”

Kaelith sat beside him.

”You look troubled.”

Rin hesitated. Then smiled.

”Just thinking.”

Kaelith nodded.

”About the curse?”

”Yes.”

”Did you learn anything?”

Rin looked at him.

”A little.”

”What?”

Rin considered his answer.

”The curse may have been created to separate two connected souls.”

Kaelith went quiet. Something flickered across his face.

Pain. Confusion. Then nothing. Rin noticed.

”Did that mean something to you?”

Kaelith shook his head.

”I don’t know.”

Kaelith really didn’t know. Rin slowly reached across the table. He placed his hand over Kaelith’s.

Kaelith looked down. Then back at him.

”You don’t have to remember.”

Kaelith’s expression softened.

”And if I never do?”

Rin smiled.

”Then I’ll know you as you are now.”

Kaelith was silent. Then he gently turned his hand beneath Rin’s, letting their palms meet.

”Thank you.”

Rin smiled.

”You’re welcome.”

They stayed that way for a while. Neither knew what the past had taken from them. Neither knew what the future would reveal nut neither was alone.

And for now, that was enough.

Far beneath the northern ruins, the crystal remained dark.

The voice did not return. The forest remained silent.

The Witness did not reveal itself. The World remained nothing more than a question.

And somewhere beyond Rin’s reach, something ancient continued waiting.

Not for Aelion, not for a God but for someone who had once made a promise.

A promise Rin could no longer remember.

Yet somehow...the forgotten promise was beginning to remember him.
