Genetic Engineer in a Tamer's World

The carriage ride back to Emberheart’s southern sector was silent. Sitting inside the gold-trimmed cabin, Kale watched the white pillars of the Ministry of Registry recede.

In his hand, he held the official document bearing the permanent Master seal... a thin parchment that legally certified his status.

Beside him, Lazek was quiet, his gaze fixed on the floorboards as the horses trotted over the stones, the silent relief of their victory overshadowed by the ticking clock against Kale’s throat.

A sharp, burning sensation thrummed against Kale’s neck, growing more intense. He reached up, his fingers brushing his collar. The synthetic skin-patch was already beginning to dissolve, liquefying into a sticky, grey grease that stained his fingertips.

It had been nearly seventy hours since Lazek had applied the graft, and his body was actively rejecting the foreign tissue. He had less than an hour before the black heretical mark would be fully exposed, casting a beacon of draconic energy that any inquisitor could detect.

The carriage came to a halt in front of the tower, the structure rising like a sentinel into the sky.

Kale and Lazek stepped out and moved quickly through the lobby. They bypassed the lower workshops, where apprentices were busy sorting common herbs, and took the private lift straight to the fourth floor. The moment the heavy doors of his laboratory locked behind them with a click, the synthetic patch completely failed.

Kale ripped off his collar, wiping away the graft’s remains. In the polished reflection of a glass vat, the black curse mark of the World Dragon pulsed with a dark energy—the heretical resonance thrummed, vibrating through his neck with a dull ache that made his breathing hitch. Without the mask, his presence carried a trace of heretical corruption, an insult that would bring Luke and his paladins back.

”We do not have time to play with temporary patches anymore, kid,” Lazek said, his voice a dry rasp as he walked toward his desk. He retrieved a sterile, silver-chased container from his spatial storage and set it on the wood.

”The permanent registry seal protects you from audits, but if Luke sweeps this room with a Divine Mirror while your neck is bare, the charter won’t save you. We need to implement a permanent, subcutaneous seal... a biological mask that won’t reject.”

Kale sat on a stool near his workbench, his green eyes fixed on the container. ”A permanent subcutaneous seal requires an elemental anchor,” he noted flatly. ”Standard fleshcrafting arrays cannot contain the World Dragon’s curse without rotting the surrounding tissue. The energetic clash will liquefy my throat within a week.”

”It would, under normal circumstances,” Lazek agreed, unscrewing the lid of the silver container. Inside lay a highly intricate, glowing mesh of micro-sized gold wires, humming with stabilising mana.

”But you are no longer a standard apprentice. You possess the dual pathways of the Ignis Core and the Terra Shell. We will use the earth element of your turtle-like chimaera to construct a physical barrier over the mark, and the fire element of the slime-core to continuously burn away any creeping corruption before it can fester.”

The strategy was elegant, utilising the dual-pathway system Kale had forged to solve his biological bottleneck.

By splicing the elemental variables of his tamed beasts directly into his dermal layers, they could construct a living, self-sustaining seal. The earth mana would provide physical defence, while the fire mana would act as a thermodynamic filter, destroying any heretical resonance before it could escape his skin.

”The process of permanent integration will be difficult,” Lazek warned, his expression turning clinical.

”We are not just covering the mark; we are splicing a micro-sized runic dampening array directly into your nervous system. If your mana spikes or your beasts resist the flow, the friction will tear your pathways apart. You must maintain absolute control over your energy channels throughout the entire procedure.”

”Begin,” Kale replied simply. He reached into his pocket and placed the Terra Shell on the table, the small, turtle-like earth-sap chimaera pulsing with a slow, heavy rhythm. Beneath his boots, the shadow rippled, and Neo emerged, the three-headed hydra hopping onto the desk.

Neo’s orange scales glowed with a warm light, its six golden eyes tracking Lazek’s movements with cautious focus. Kale closed his eyes, activating his Mental Bastion trait to raise a cold, structured barrier around his core, filtering out the oncoming trauma.

Lazek stepped closer, his fingers coated in green fleshcrafting fluid that hummed with stabilising energy. He picked up the delicate gold runic mesh and aligned it with the jagged edges of the black heretical mark. ”Stay still, kid... do not breathe.”

The moment the gold mesh touched Kale’s skin, a blinding, white-hot agony flared. It felt as if molten iron were poured directly into his neck, the searing heat travelling down his spine and making his muscles spasm.

The air in his lungs turned to ash, and his vision blurred into a wash of orange and red as the heretical curse fought violently against the stabilising array, the black mark trying to reject the permanent seal.

Deep within his mind space, the cold barriers of his Mental Bastion held firm, absorbing the shockwaves of pain. Kale did not scream, nor did he allow his mana to flicker. He guided his energy with precision, directing the earth mana of the Terra Shell toward his throat. The earth element anchored the tissue, preventing the heat from liquefying his nervous system.

Simultaneously, he channelled the purified fire mana of the Ignis Core through his taming bond. The crimson energy entered his neck, forming a thermodynamic filter that clashed with the creeping rot of the curse.

The fire did not burn his own flesh; instead, it consumed the dark, volatile residue of the World Dragon’s seal, burning away the corruption before it could take hold. It was a dangerous balance, requiring him to smooth out the cellular friction with absolute precision manually

Neo let out a low, distressed trill from the table, its wings twitching as it felt its master’s intense physical strain through the shared bond.

But the hydra remained in its place, compressing its energy and directing a subtle, highly refined stream of its absolute taming affinity directly into Kale’s pathways.

The taming force acted as a natural bridge, forcing the conflicting elemental forces to integrate without further resistance.

Lazek worked with a disciplined speed, his hands moving with the precision of a master fleshcrafter. He wove the biological veins of Kale’s dermal tissue through the gold runic mesh, performing micro-sutures with surgical accuracy and anchoring the conflicting forces within the permanent biological matrix.

Slowly, the white-hot heat began to recede, replaced by a cool, comfortable numbness that spread across his throat.

The gold mesh settled beneath his skin, its edges fading into his natural flesh until the entire array was completely invisible. The putrid, black heretical mark was gone, buried beneath a flawless, neutral biological barrier that thrummed with a steady, self-sustaining cadence.

Kale let out a long, slow breath, his clothes soaked in sweat as he slumped slightly in his chair.

He wiped his forehead, his green eyes clear once more as he looked at his reflection in the glass. His neck was completely smooth, the skin unmarked and showing no physical discrepancy. The heretical resonance was entirely gone, masked permanently by the subcutaneous array.

”The integration is stable,” Lazek noted, stepping back with a rare, genuine grin. ”The heretical resonance is completely masked, and the seal will continuously feed on your dual-pathway energy to maintain the barrier.

Even if Luke sweeps this room with a Divine Mirror, the holy mana will detect nothing but normal, earth-attributed cellular structure. Your mask is permanent, kid.”

Kale stood up, adjusting his clean, gold-trimmed Master robes.

The fabric was stiff, representing the immense status and political immunity he had secured. He felt remarkably strong, his muscles dense and his mind entirely sharp, free from the curse’s exhausting drain. The dual-pathway system was complete, providing a perfect balance of fire and granite that secured his physical survival.

He picked up the Terra Shell, storing the pulsing turtle-like chimaera securely in his pocket. Beside him, Neo flapped its wings and glided onto his shoulder, letting out a soft, satisfied huff from its central head.

They had secured their foundation, masked their secrets, and claimed their place among the capital’s elite.

”We have won the first war, Master,” Kale said flatly, his green eyes shimmering with a quiet, determined light. ”But the storm is still circling Emberheart. The Church’s inquisitors will not remain quiet, and the Prince’s faction will expect certain results from our agreements. We must use this temporary safety to accelerate our next project.”

Lazek took a slow puff of his pipe, the bitter smoke rising toward the ceiling.

”You have your own laboratory now, disciple... and the backing of my grandmaster status. The High Council has approved your workspace, and the Association’s resource vaults are now open. Do what you must, but remember... the capital is a battlefield of whispers, and any sudden movements will bring the predators back.”

Kale nodded quietly, his green eyes reflecting the faint glow of the floating scripts. He walked toward his stone table, where the rolled parchment of the Ignis Core blueprint lay waiting.

He rolled out the sheet, his fingers tracing the genetic formulas with a renewed focus.
