The Mafia King of Philadelphia: From witness to his doted wife

They climbed into the car and pulled out through the gates, the mansion shrinking small behind them in the rearview mirror.

Viktor had already called in half his men, sending them ahead to slip out of the country that same night, under cover of darkness. He knew exactly whose territory he was walking into now, Don Konstantin’s, and he had no intention of walking in there unprepared.

If things went badly, if the whole visit turned into something he could not talk his way out of, he had already built a quiet path for Sienna, a way for her to get out alive, to disappear somewhere safe while the rest of it burned down around him. He had said nothing about any of this to her. Not one word.

What he did not know was that Sienna had done the very same thing, in her own quiet way, working through her own contacts, her own careful arrangements, so that if the night turned against them, Viktor would still walk out of it alive too.

Inside the car, Viktor pulled her close against his side, one arm wrapped around her shoulders, and neither of them spoke much for the rest of the ride.

The city lights slid past the windows, then thinned, then disappeared entirely as they reached the private airstrip where the jet sat waiting, its engines already humming low in the dark.

Only Viktor and Sienna were permitted to board. Every bag they carried had to be handed over to be searched, checked, and returned before they were allowed through, a formality neither of them found surprising in the least.

They had expected exactly this, had prepared for exactly this, and so they stood there together, calm and unbothered, waiting while careful hands went through everything they owned.

”Hello, sir. Hello, madam,” the pilot said as they finally boarded, one of the crew members echoing the greeting with a small bow of the head. Sienna gave a brief nod in return. Viktor said nothing at all, his eyes already elsewhere, already moving.

They settled into their seats, Viktor facing her across the narrow cabin, and once the doors sealed shut and the engines began their low climbing hum beneath them, he simply looked at her.

Not the way he used to look at her, not with that easy, hungry pleasure she had grown used to over these past months. This was something else entirely, something quieter and heavier, the way a person looks at something they are standing guard over, something they cannot afford to look away from even for a second.

He did not blink. His eyes stayed fixed on her face the entire time, and she felt it, that steady weight of his attention, even as she reached for her seatbelt and clicked it into place, glancing away only briefly.

She remembered, without wanting to, the last time the two of them had sat inside a plane like this one. That time, she had been in handcuffs, and Viktor had been the one shipping her off to Italy against her will, a prisoner then in every sense of the word.

Tonight the story ran differently. She was still being forced somewhere she did not choose, but not by Viktor this time. By her own father. A man she had not seen, had not known, for twenty years.

She understood, sitting there with the engines rumbling beneath her, that nothing was waiting for them at the other end of this flight but danger. And still, somehow, she was ready for it. She wanted this. She wanted to finally stand in front of this part of her life and look it straight in the eye, because it had all come down to this single point, this one dinner, this one meeting.

Her mother had not been able to give her the answers she needed. Maybe her father could. Or maybe, she thought, some small stubborn hope still living in her chest, maybe the don would turn out to be her uncle after all, not her father, and then all the pain of the last week, all the anguish, might finally settle into something that made sense.

And if he truly was her father, she still needed to understand why. Why a man builds a whole life around a daughter he never wanted to raise. Why claim her at all, if not to keep her?

Sienna lifted her eyes, and her gaze caught on Viktor’s, still fixed there, still watching her.

”It’s going to be okay,” she said softly, laying her hand over his where it rested on the armrest between them.

Viktor closed his hand around hers, holding tight, his eyes never leaving her face. A small, soft smile pulled at his mouth, as if he believed her completely. But underneath that smile, he knew better. He knew this night could end in only two ways, and there was not a single one of them he liked.

He kept looking at her like this was his last real chance to look, the way a person studies something precious right before they have to set it down, not knowing when, or if, they will get to look at it again in quite the same way.

And the longer he looked, the more certain he became that it would never be enough. No amount of looking would ever be enough. He wanted an entire life with this woman, wanted it so plainly and completely that it startled him sometimes, the size of it.

If there were another life waiting somewhere after this one, he would still choose her in it, every single time. He wanted nothing else. Just a life, whatever shape it took, as long as she was in it.

He said almost nothing for half the flight, sitting there in silence, holding her hand, watching her. When he finally spoke, his voice came out full of things tangled together, warmth and fear and worry, and something else too, something that sounded almost like he was speaking her own private thoughts back to her before she had even found the words for them herself.

”Rest a little, Sienna,” he said. ”I’m watching over you.”

She needed to hear it, more than she had realized. She had not been able to sleep earlier, her mind too full, too restless, but something about Viktor saying it out loud settled her, gave her a small measure of peace she had not expected. She let her head fall back against the seat and slowly closed her eyes.

Not long after, one of the crew members approached quietly to ask if they wanted anything before the cabin lights dimmed for the night. Before Sienna could even open her eyes to answer, Viktor lifted one hand, a small, sharp motion, waving the woman away without a word.
