...
Lie Fan chuckled heartily as he watched his wives enthusiastically devour the meal he had prepared. The simple, domestic joy of the moment was a perfect balm for his weary soul. ”I have given the recipe to Master Chen,” Lie Fan explained, picking up a piece of chicken for himself. ”You may request it in the future. However, a word of caution.”
He looked at them seriously, tapping the heavy crust. ”This food is cooked by submerging it entirely in boiling fat. It is incredibly heavy. If you eat this every day, it will severely impact your health, slow your minds, and eventually, it will drastically alter your appearance. Consider it a rare, joyous indulgence, not a dietary staple.”
The women nodded, though Zhen Ji was already eyeing the last piece on the platter with intense economic calculation.
As the meal progressed, the conversation flowed easily, shifting from the daily operations of their various ministries to the broader state of the empire. The warm glow of the lanterns and the full bellies created an atmosphere of absolute trust and intimacy.
”The reports from the southwest were finalized today,” Lie Fan casually mentioned, taking a sip of his tea. ”Xun You and Huang Zhong have successfully consolidated the delta. Samatata is secured. They are returning to the capital.”
A murmur of relief and congratulations went around the table.
”That is wonderful news,” Ying Yue said, smiling. ”The empire is truly at peace. The borders are secure.”
Lie Fan set his teacup down, his expression shifting slightly, the warm husband making room for the visionary Emperor once more.
”The borders are secure for now,” Lie Fan corrected gently. ”But peace is a fragile illusion unless it is set in stone. Literally.”
He looked around the table, ensuring he had their absolute attention.
”I spent the day drafting a new architectural mandate,” Lie Fan revealed, his voice dropping into a register of profound, terrifying ambition. ”The Great Wall in the north has served us well. But it is merely a hat on a giant. I intend to build the cage.”
He paused, letting the silence build.
”I am going to expand the Great Wall,” Lie Fan announced. ”Not by a few miles. I am going to drive a massive, unbreachable barrier of stone and iron straight down the western frontier. It will parallel the Silk Road, cutting across the deserts, the corridors, and the mountains, all the way down to the impassable jungles of the southwest.”
The five women stared at him, their chopsticks hovering in mid-air.
They were intelligent, politically astute women. They instantly understood the sheer, mind boggling scale of what he was proposing.
”A wall down the entire western border?” Cai Wenji whispered, her historical mind racing. ”The logistics... the manpower... it would be the largest single construction project in the history of the world. It would take decades.”
”And millions of tons of stone,” Zhen Ji added, her financial instincts immediately calculating the staggering, astronomical cost. ”The treasury is vast, husband, but a project of that magnitude could bankrupt the provincial reserves if not managed perfectly.”
”It will be managed perfectly,” Lie Fan assured her, his eyes burning with the fire of a man who could see the future. ”Because the cost of not building it is far higher. A wall of that size is not just to keep the Kushans or the Parthians out. It is a symbol. It is a permanent, physical declaration that the Hengyuan mainland is a singular, unified, impenetrable entity.”
He leaned forward, lowering his voice. ”And, centuries from now, when we are gone, if a rebellious province decides it wants to fracture the empire... they will find themselves trapped inside. They will not be able to run to foreign powers for aid. The wall will keep the empire whole, by force if necessary.”
The ladies sat in stunned silence, the savory taste of the fried chicken entirely forgotten, replaced by the sheer, overwhelming awe of their husband’s ambition. He wasn’t just ruling the present; he was actively, physically trying to chain the future to his will.
Lu Lingqi was the first to recover, a fierce, martial pride shining in her eyes. She raised her teacup.
”To the Western Wall, then,” the warrior wife declared, a fierce smile on her lips. ”May it be as unbreakable as the man who designed it.”
The other wives raised their cups in unison, the soft clinking of porcelain echoing over the koi pond. They drank to the future, to the monumental cage of stone, and to the terrifying, brilliant Emperor who had cooked them dinner.
The soft, warm glow of the silk lanterns reflected off the surface of the koi pond, casting dancing ripples of light across the ceiling of the private dining pavilion. The silver cloches and jade plates, previously laden with the Emperor’s unprecedented culinary creations, had been swiftly and silently cleared away by the palace servants, leaving only the delicate porcelain teacups and the lingering, savory aroma of the fried chicken.
The monumental toast to the Western Wall had brought a fitting, triumphant end to the meal. With the weight of future empires momentarily set aside, the five empresses excused themselves to the imperial bathhouses to wash away the oils of the meal and the fatigue of their demanding days.
Lie Fan did not return to his study. The blueprints could wait until the sun rose. Tonight was for the fragile, beautiful humanity that grounded his godly ambitions. He made his way to the private inner living quarters, a secluded sanctuary forbidden to all but his wives and his most trusted personal guards.
The living room was a masterpiece of understated elegance. Heavy, dark mahogany furniture was accented by plush, crimson silk cushions and thick, woven rugs from the western trade routes. A large bronze brazier in the corner radiated a gentle heat, burning highly refined sandalwood that filled the air with a sweet, calming musk.
Lie Fan shed his formal outer robes, leaving only a comfortable, loose fitting silk tunic and trousers. He poured himself a small cup of warm plum wine and sat upon the wide, cushioned divan, leaning his head back and closing his eyes. The silence was a rare luxury. ℯ𝔴ℯ
The soft, barely audible slide of the shoji doors opening broke his reverie.
Lie Fan opened his eyes to see Lu Lingqi stepping into the room. The fierce, uncompromising general of the female auxiliary infantry looked entirely transformed. The heavy, scaled armor and the scent of iron and sweat were gone. She wore a loosely tied, deeply crimson silk nightrobe that clung to her athletic, perfectly sculpted curves. Her dark hair, usually tied back in a strict, martial topknot, fell in damp, loose waves cascading over her shoulders. She smelled of jasmine soap and the warm, clean scent of the bathhouse steam.
She paused in the doorway, a soft, rare smile playing on her lips as she looked at him sitting on the divan. In the dim light, stripped of her command and her armor, she was breathtakingly beautiful.
”The others are still arguing over the optimum temperature of the hot springs,” Lu Lingqi said, her voice dropping to a smooth, husky murmur as she padded barefoot across the thick rugs. ”I prefer not to linger. The heat of the water makes my muscles entirely too sluggish.”
”A warrior even in the bathhouse,” Lie Fan chuckled, setting his cup of plum wine down on the low wooden table. He patted his thigh. ”Come here, my fierce general. You have marched enough for one day.”
Lu Lingqi did not hesitate. The strict, unyielding decorum she maintained in the public eye evaporated the moment they were alone. She crossed the room with the fluid, lethal grace of a predator and straddled his lap, settling her weight comfortably across his thighs. She draped her arms loosely around his neck, burying her face into the crook of his shoulder, inhaling his scent.
Lie Fan immediately wrapped his strong arms around her waist, pulling her flush against his chest. He could feel the heat radiating from her skin through the thin silk of her robe, the steady, powerful rhythm of her heartbeat pressing against his own. He buried his face in her damp hair, placing a soft, lingering kiss just below her ear, feeling her shiver slightly in his arms.
”You were the first to raise your cup to the Western Wall,” Lie Fan whispered, his hands slowly, reverently tracing the curve of her spine, feeling the dense, coiled muscles of a woman who spent her life wielding a halberd. ”You always were the most eager for a monumental defense.”
”A wall keeps the enemy out,” Lu Lingqi murmured, pulling back just enough to look into his eyes, her gaze intense and liquid in the lantern light. ”But it also keeps what is mine safe inside. I would build it with my bare hands if you asked me to.”
Lie Fan smiled, a deep, resonant warmth blooming in his chest. He reached up, gently brushing a damp strand of hair from her cheek. His thumb traced the soft line of her jaw.
”You give me your strength every day, Qi’er,” Lie Fan said, his voice dropping into a register of heavy, intimate affection. He tilted his head, his lips hovering mere inches from hers. ”But tell me... does my fierce warrior wife have enough strength left to give me another child?”
The reaction was instantaneous and very endearing. The hardened, fearless commander who would charge a line of hostile army without blinking suddenly flushed a deep, vibrant crimson. The blush spread rapidly from her cheeks down her neck, visible even in the dim light of the living room. Her eyes widened, the tough exterior cracking to reveal the deeply devoted, vulnerable woman beneath.
”You... you tease me,” she stammered softly, her breath hitching, trying to look away, but Lie Fan’s hand gently cupped her chin, keeping her gaze locked with his.
”I am not teasing,” he whispered, his thumb lightly stroking her lower lip. ”Our family is the foundation of this empire. And I want more of you in this world.”
Lu Lingqi’s blush deepened, but the martial fire returned to her eyes, burning with a sudden, overwhelming passion. She leaned into his touch, her hands sliding from his neck to tangle in his hair.
”If that is what my Emperor desires,” she whispered, her voice a ragged, breathless purr against his lips, ”then I am more than ready. I am yours. Entirely.”
Lie Fan could not hold back a second longer. The restraint snapped.
He closed the distance, capturing her lips in a deep, searing kiss. Lu Lingqi met his passion with an aggressive hunger that was entirely her own, her mouth opening to his, her tongue tangling with his in a hot, desperate exchange of breath and desire. A soft, involuntary moan escaped her throat, vibrating against his lips as the intensity of the kiss skyrocketed.
Lie Fan’s hands moved from her back, sliding down to grip her hips, pulling her even tighter against his growing arousal. She shifted her weight on his lap, aligning their bodies perfectly, the friction of the fine silk sliding against silk sending a jolt of raw electricity through them both. His hands wandered upward, mapping the strong, familiar curves of her waist and ribs, before his palms slid around to cup the soft, heavy weight of her breasts through the thin fabric of her nightrobe.
Lu Lingqi gasped into his mouth as his thumbs brushed over her peaking nipples, her back arching instinctively, pressing herself deeper into his hands. She kissed him harder, her nails digging slightly into the muscles of his shoulders, completely surrendering to the overwhelming, intoxicating wave of physical heat.
The living room vanished, the empire vanished. There was only the taste of plum wine on his tongue, the smell of jasmine on her skin, and the desperate, friction heavy grinding of their bodies as the kiss deepened into something wild and consuming.
They were so entirely lost in the sensory overload of the moment that they did not hear the soft sliding of the shoji doors.
”The water was absolutely perfect, though I do think the temperature could be—”
The voice of Ying Yue cut through the air, abruptly followed by a sharp, collective gasp.
Lie Fan and Lu Lingqi froze.
Lie Fan slowly opened his eyes, breaking the kiss but keeping his hands firmly wrapped around Lu Lingqi’s waist. Standing in the doorway were Ying Yue, Zhen Ji, Cai Wenji, and Diao Chan. All four women were dressed in their own elegant nightrobes, their hair damp, their faces frozen in various states of blushing shock as they stared at the highly compromising, heavily entangled position of their husband and their sister wife on the divan.
For two agonizing, breathless seconds, nobody moved. The only sound in the room was Lu Lingqi’s heavy, ragged breathing.
Then, Ying Yue, maintaining her flawless imperial dignity despite the violent blush staining her own cheeks, delicately raised a hand to her mouth and cleared her throat with a loud, highly pronounced ahem.
The spell broke.
Lu Lingqi scrambled off Lie Fan’s lap as if the silk cushions had suddenly caught fire. The fearless commander of the vanguard was utterly, hopelessly flustered. She pulled her nightrobe tightly around her chest, turning her face away to hide the bright burning red embarrassment that consumed her. She looked like she wanted the mahogany floorboards to open up and swallow her whole.
”We... we were just discussing martial formations,” Lu Lingqi stammered, a blatant, terrible lie that only caused the other wives to blush harder.
Lie Fan, however, did not look embarrassed in the slightest. He leaned back against the cushions, entirely relaxed, a slow, deeply amused smirk spreading across his handsome face. He looked at the four beautiful women standing in the doorway, taking in their flushed cheeks and widened eyes.
”There is no need to linger in the doorway, my loves,” Lie Fan said smoothly, his voice still carrying the heavy, gravelly edge of arousal. He patted the empty spaces on the large divan and the surrounding cushions. ”If all of you wanted my attention as well, you need only ask. I have more than enough to give every single one of you.”
The reaction was instantaneous. The four wives blushed even deeper, the scandalous, brazen invitation making them incredibly flustered.
Ying Yue rolled her eyes, though a small, fond smile betrayed her strict demeanor. She walked gracefully into the room, taking a seat on a plush cushion opposite the divan, gracefully crossing her legs.
”You cannot trap us with your silver tongue, husband,” Ying Yue reprimanded him playfully, waving a hand dismissively. ”We know exactly what you are planning. You think to fluster us so we forget that you abandoned us in the bathhouse.”
”Plans?” Lie Fan placed a hand over his heart, feigning absolute, wounded innocence. ”I have no grand strategies tonight, Yue’er. I have no plots, no ledgers, and no blueprints. I have absolutely no plans other than kissing my lovely wives and enjoying the peace I fought so hard to build.”
Diao Chan giggled softly, a melodic sound that instantly lightened the heavy, charged atmosphere of the room. She glided across the rugs and took a seat near the guqin that rested on a low wooden stand in the corner. ”If you are truly without plans, Your Majesty, then you must submit to ours. And our plan is to simply relax.”
The tension broke, replaced by a warm, deeply domestic comfort. The wives settled into the living room, seamlessly falling into a rhythm of shared, quiet intimacy that required no grand gestures.
Cai Wenji brought out a beautiful, jade carved Go board, challenging Lie Fan to a match. While they played, placing the black and white stones with soft, rhythmic clicks, Diao Chan began to pluck the strings of the guqin, filling the room with a complex, incredibly soothing melody that seemed to wash the stress of the empire from the walls.
Zhen Ji reclined on a chaise lounge nearby, casually reviewing a small ledger of silk trade prices she had brought from her study, occasionally offering a sharp, witty commentary on Cai Wenji’s aggressive Go strategy. Lu Lingqi, her blush finally subsiding to a soft pink, sat close to Lie Fan’s side, watching the board intently, offering martial analogies for the placement of the stones.
For hours, the Emperor of Hengyuan did not think of the Kushan Empire, the vastness of the delta, or the monumental undertaking of the Western Wall. He existed entirely in the present, surrounded by the laughter, the intellect, and the profound love of the women who anchored his soul.
As the night wore on and the sandalwood incense burned low in the brazier, the natural exhaustion of the day finally took hold. The Go game ended in a respectful draw, and Diao Chan’s music slowed to a gentle, lingering finale.
The wives exchanged knowing, silent glances. There was a subtle, unspoken schedule to their domestic lives, a mutual understanding of shared affection. Tonight, it was clear where the Emperor’s attentions had been initially focused.
Ying Yue stood up, stretching gracefully. ”The hour grows late, and the imperial physicians constantly remind us of the necessity of sleep. We bid you a restful night, husband.”
They offered their quiet, affectionate goodnights, leaving the living room one by one, until only Lie Fan and Lu Lingqi remained.
Lie Fan stood up, offering his hand to the warrior woman. She took it, her grip strong and warm. He did not say a word, simply pulling her close and leading her gently toward her private chambers. The teasing was over, replaced by a deep, quiet, and profound connection.
Late into the night, beneath the heavy silk canopies of her bed, the Emperor and his fierce general found their release, not in the frantic, desperate heat of the living room, but in a slow, deeply emotional, and deep passionate union that reaffirmed the unbreakable bond they shared.
The next morning, the transition from the soft, perfume scented tranquility of the inner palace to the roaring, mechanical heart of the Hengyuan Empire was absolute and jarring. Lie Fan, dressed in his dark, utilitarian imperial day robes, strode purposefully toward the sprawling, heavily fortified complex of the Imperial Workshop on the outskirts of Xiapi. He was flanked by the Yellow Ghost Bodyguards, their footsteps echoing sharply against the paved stone roads.
