Not to declare himself Emperor like Yuan Shu had, foolishly and without the foundation to hold such a claim combined with a fake one, but to secure it, to let the world grow used to his leadership first. Prestige was not a race, it was a tide, and he intended to let his rise be a tide so strong, the people would call him emperor before he ever opened his mouth.

Nearly an hour passed before the door slid open.

One by one, the scholars entered, some old, robes sweeping the floor, beards white and eyes sharp, others middle aged, still hale with vigor and wisdom alike. They bowed low, and Lie Fan rose and returned the gesture with a depth of respect that was rare for a warlord.

”My lord,” Lu Zhi spoke first, his voice gravelly with age but firm. ”Forgive our tardiness. The students required attention.”

”Masters,” Lie Fan said warmly. ”I should be the one to apologize for taking your time, so no forgiveness is needed from you masters. The future of this land rests as much in your hands as it does in mine.”

Sima Hui, as the eldest and most prestiged among them, nodded and motioned for the others to take their seats. ”It is we who are honored, my lord. You’ve built what many only dreamed of, a realm where the sword protects the pen, not rules it.”

Lie Fan offered a faint smile. ”That balance is hard to maintain. And today, I ask you all to help me maintain it.”

”The time has come,” Lie Fan began, ”to sow the seeds of knowledge into the soil of our land. War has given us borders. Peace must give us people who can read them. I want to implement our basic education plan for the common folk, just like we prepared in reading, writing, arithmetic, and moral instruction.”

A silence fell over the room. Not in disapproval, but in weight. They didn’t expect that their lord come here to inform them that the education plan will start.

Cai Yong leaned forward, his long fingers steepled. ”So my lord thought u was time to implement the plan then. I fully support this move. But we must be prepared that the nobles will not see it on my lord’s way.

Lie Fan nodded. ”That is why we begin the implementation carefully just like we have prepared. Slowly. We will not challenge the hierarchy openly. Instead, we will create Supplementary Learning Centers, small schools in villages and towns, a suggestion that Master Pang Deging had suggested to me through a letter he sent me.”

”They will teach basic knowledge framed as tools for better farming, better trade, better understanding of imperial decrees. We couch this reform not as enlightenment, but as usefulness. That way, we do not stir the hornet’s nest of noble pride. Not yet.”

Zhuge Xuan smiled faintly, the corners of his eyes crinkling. ”I approve of I’m the plan to be implemented that way my lord, it will be mcu easier to placate the nobles that way.”

Sima Hui, the reclusive sage, stroked his beard thoughtfully. ”Even if the nobles forced my lord to close them down through some way, or send people to cause trouble and make the common folk uncomfortable, they will teach their children, and their children’s children. It becomes self sustaining.”

Lie Fan’s eyes flicked toward the Imperial Seal inside the box. ”Eventually, yes. And we then proceed by building libraries that we planed. In major towns. Places where those who can read to gather and learn. Places where even a beggar might read a verse and dream of something more. With many of the books had been printed using the woodblock printing.”

Hearing that, everyone nodded their heads, a ripple of silent agreement moving through the room like a soft breeze through a still forest.

The plan had been made over months of careful deliberation, and now, with their lord adding his own measured caution and visionary touches, the first step toward reshaping the heart of the land had been set.

Education, true, foundational, and accessible, was no longer just a dream of the scholars gathered here. It was beginning to breathe.

Lie Fan let the moment settle, watching each of the masters seated before him, their faces lined with age, wisdom, and a quiet, fierce hope. The silence was comfortable, the way silence often is between kindred spirits who understand the gravity of the road ahead. But then, something shifted.

His gaze slowly drifted to the ornate wooden box that rested near him on a table of dark sandalwood. The mood in the room changed as well, subtle but certain. The relaxed air gave way to something more intense, more focused. Lie Fan’s expression grew solemn, the warmth in his voice receding like a tide.

”Masters,” he said, his tone low and firm, ”what I am about to share must not leave this room.”

The six men straightened in their seats, the ease in their shoulders giving way to alert tension. All traces of lightness vanished from their eyes.

Cai Yong’s hands stopped their rhythmic tapping. Sima Hui leaned forward slightly, his brow furrowing. Lu Zhi’s sharp gaze bore into Lie Fan, attentive. Even Zhuge Xuan, the quietest among them, stiffened ever so slightly in his chair.

”I am not issuing this as a request,” Lie Fan continued. ”But as a command. What you see and hear from this moment must remain here, until the time comes.”

No one spoke. One by one, they each nodded. Their wordless assent was as binding as any written oath.

Lie Fan, satisfied, reached out and gently lifted the lid of the wooden box. The hinges creaked softly, a whisper of history reawakening. What lay within was enough to rob them of breath.

The green shimmer of jade caught the lamplight, casting a subtle glow across the room. The seal’s dragon carving — coiled, ancient, eternal — seemed almost to stir in the flickering shadows. A small corner was chipped, a flaw that had become part of its history’s tempest. But it was unmistakable.

The Imperial Seal.

The Heirloom Seal of the Realm.

For a long, long moment, no one spoke. Their eyes were locked on the object as though it were a spirit summoned from myth. Some of them had suspected something was within the box, Lie Fan never left anything to chance, and he had drawn attention to it without meaning to. But none had expected this.

Lu Zhi was the first to speak, though his voice was barely above a whisper. ”By the heavens...”

Cai Yong’s face was pale, but his eyes were keen, studying every line, every curve, every ancient character etched onto the jade. ”I have seen this before... In the palace... Yes. The mark here, the chipped corner. It is real. It is truly the Seal.”

Sima Hui leaned back slightly, his hand stroking his beard as though needing the motion to keep his balance. ”My lord,” he said slowly, ”how...? How did you come to possess this?”

Lie Fan closed the lid with care, the soft sound of it sealing again as final as a judgment. He smiled, but it was not a boastful smile. It was measured, veiled with intent.

”How I came upon it,” Lie Fan replied, ”is not important. What matters is why I brought it here. Why I show it to you, the six masters who will be the backbone of my education reform, today.”

He paused, then stood tall, his figure casting a long shadow across the room as the sun light danced behind him.

Zhuge Xuan then voice his question. ”You have had this for years, my lord. Yet you did not proclaim yourself Emperor as Yuan Shu did. Why?”

”This seal is not a toy. Nor is it a talisman I flaunt for power. I do not intend to parade it before the world like Yuan Shu did, begging history to call him emperor before he earned it.”

He stepped closer to them, voice steady, a quiet force building with every word.

”I hold this seal... not to declare myself emperor, but to become the kind of man who deserves to bear it. When that day comes, the people will not be surprised. They will say, ’Of course. It has always been him.’ That is my ambition, not a throne taken, but a throne offered.”

The weight of those words settled over the room like the snow of a long winter. Not cold, but inevitable.

The six scholars looked at each other, each processing the enormity of the moment. That Lie Fan harbored ambitions of unification, of restoring order and virtue to the fractured empire, none of them doubted that.

He had shown it in his actions more than his words. But that he had the Seal, and the wisdom not to flaunt it, was what set him apart.

”It was said,” Zhuge Xuan murmured, ”that Yuan Shu’s seal was fake. A forgery passed through deceitful hands.”

Lu Zhi nodded. ”But this... this is the genuine article. I would swear it before Heaven.”

Cai Yong’s voice was low and thoughtful. ”The Heirloom Seal... crafted from the Heshibi jade. Passed down from dynasty to dynasty. The symbol of the Mandate of Heaven itself.”

Sima Hui’s eyes, ever distant, now locked on Lie Fan. ”And you, my lord... what do you intend to do next?”

Lie Fan did not return to his seat. He stood firm, hands clasped behind his back.

”Nothing, yet,” he said. ”The land is not ready. The people are not ready. Even we are not yet ready. First, we build the foundation. Education. Justice. Peace. A realm that protects the weak, that feeds the hungry, that allows every man and woman to know the laws by which they are governed. When we have achieved that... only then do we whisper of empire.”

A heavy silence followed. But this time, it was not shock that held their tongues, it was awe. The kind of silence that comes only when men recognize that they are witnessing history before it is written.

Zhuge Xuan was the first to break it, his voice quiet, almost reverent. ”Then we are with you, my lord. To the end of this road, wherever it may lead.”

Sima Hui followed. ”Let us guide this tide together, until the day it can no longer be denied.”

Lu Zhi, who had seen Lie Fan’s growth, dipped his head. ”You have grown, my lord. Into more than a warrior. Into more than a ruler. Into a capable man. You have my loyalty.” One by one, the others echoed it, Cai Yong, Zhuge Xuan, Sima Hui, Pang Degong, and finally Huang Chengyan, who had watched silently all along but whose eyes burned with quiet resolve.
