Chapter 402: Chapter 401: A Two-Week Vacation

Kenway Compound - Konohagakure - Elemental Nations

The village of Konohagakure breathed with the steady, measured rhythm of a populace exhaling a long-held breath. Beyond the heavy timber and reinforced stone of the Kenway Compound, the afternoon carried the distinctly peaceful sounds of a post-war recovery: the distant clatter of merchants reopening their stalls, the muted rush of ANBU moving seamlessly across the rooftops, and the soft, relieved whispers of civilians discussing the miraculous, instantaneous return of their army.

Inside the private office of the compound, however, the atmosphere was entirely divorced from the quiet celebrations of the streets.

The spacious room was thick with the fragrant, earthy smoke of a cigar that rested idly in a crystal ashtray. The heavy mahogany desk was buried beneath an avalanche of sprawling maps, logistics ledgers, and freshly unsealed intelligence scrolls. Sitting amidst the administrative chaos, dressed impeccably in his black Vanguard uniform, Alaric Jonathan Kenway was engaged in a battle he despised far more than physical combat.

He was writing.

”Damn, I genuinely hate paperwork,” Alaric muttered, his voice a dry, grating rumble as his calligraphy brush scratched relentlessly across the high-grade parchment. ”I have manipulated absolute monarchies, built a global banking syndicate with my powers, and ended continental wars before lunch... yet somehow, wet ink remains civilization’s most persistent, undefeated enemy.”

This was not a standard, bureaucratic mission report destined for the village archives. This was a highly classified, Hokage-only document, engineered with absolute, surgical precision for Tsunade’s eyes alone.

He documented the military arithmetic first. He confirmed the total withdrawal of Iwagakure’s forward forces and noted ōnoki’s personal, albeit begrudging, agreement to a temporary cessation of hostilities. He credited the stability of Konoha’s positions in the Grass and Waterfall theaters to Shikaku’s flawless strategy, the telepathic coordination of the Yamanaka, and the sheer, overwhelming abundance of resources he had personally extorted from the Fire Daimyo.

He meticulously recorded Haku Yuki’s performance against the Third Tsuchikage as a resounding strategic victory, explicitly clarifying that ōnoki’s survival was an intentional, calculated variable. ’Killing a reigning Kage in that specific moment,’ Alaric wrote, ’would have violently destabilized the entire continent, creating a chaotic power vacuum that would only serve to accelerate the coming threat of Madara Uchiha, who thrives on exactly that kind of historical instability.’

He noted that the Akatsuki remained fractured, but confirmed that the core leadership... Nagato and Konan... were currently bound by a strict, unbreakable contract under his personal terms. Obito Uchiha remained a priority, apocalyptic threat.

Then, Alaric shifted to the deeply personal, incendiary recommendations.

’Personal Recommendation:Godaime Hokage-sama, the geopolitical situation has moved entirely beyond the safety of ordinary compartmentalization. I officially recommend that Jiraiya of the Sannin and Shikaku Nara be granted full, unrestricted knowledge regarding the survival of Minato Namikaze and Kushina Uzumaki, Naruto Uzumaki’s active awareness of his parentage, and Itachi Uchiha’s true current status within my compound.

He laid out the logic with cold, unyielding clarity. Jiraiya had the fundamental right to know; he was Minato’s sensei, Naruto’s godfather, and one of the incredibly few individuals emotionally and strategically mature enough to bear the crushing weight of the secret.

Shikaku Nara needed to know because he was the master strategist of the village. If Konoha faced an existential, world-ending disaster, the chief tactician could not formulate a winning board without knowing exactly what hidden, god-tier pieces were actually available to play.

He stipulated severe conditions: Shikaku was to be authorized to use Minato, Kushina, and Itachi for secret, black-ops contingencies only if absolutely necessary. Their identities were never to be exposed to the public or the civilian council. Minato and Kushina were to remain ghosts unless Konohagakure faced total annihilation, and Itachi was only to be deployed in theaters where secrecy, flawless precision, and absolute deniability were paramount.

Finally, he penned the diplomatic mandate.

’During my conversation with ōnoki above the battlefield, I informed the Tsuchikage that the leaders of the Five Great Nations must convene. I recommend a Kage Summit be held in the neutral territory of Tetsu no Kuni, with General Mifune acting as the host, exactly one month from today. Publicly, this summit can be softly framed as a postwar stabilization and economic recovery conference. Privately, it must aggressively address the resurrection of Madara Uchiha, the movements of Obito, the remaining Akatsuki elements, and the grim reality that the hidden villages are about to face an entity far larger than another border dispute.’

Alaric finished the final, elegant stroke of ink. He rolled the heavy parchment tight, channeling a highly specific, microscopic frequency of his golden chakra into the wax. He applied a complex fuinjutsu lock that would violently incinerate the scroll if opened by any chakra signature other than Tsunade Senju’s.

The Hyūga Compound

Leaving the heavy atmosphere of his office behind, Alaric seamlessly traversed the village to honor a much quieter, though no less monumental, arrangement.

The Hyūga Compound was a fortress of immaculate, terrifying discipline. The sprawling estate felt formal and impossibly quiet, the very air thick with ancient traditions and rigid hierarchies. The clan had already agreed to the revolutionary exchange, but the actual, physical handover of their deepest medical secret remained a profoundly heavy moment.

Hiashi Hyūga received Alaric in a private, minimalist meeting room devoid of any ostentatious decoration, sliding a beautifully crafted, lacquer-sealed wooden box across the low table.

Inside rested the absolute totality of the Hyūga Clan Secret Ointment.

It was not merely a list of herbs. It contained the complete, exhaustive ingredient registry, the exact, cellular-level preparation methods, the hyper-specific compounding ratios, the multi-stage refinement and heating process, the precise chakra infusion methodology required during cooling, exhaustive notes on shelf-life degradation, its known biological limitations, possible elemental variations, and the complex, guarded distinctions between inferior, standard, and high-grade batches.

This was not just medicine. It was centuries of clan wealth, a cornerstone of their heritage, and one of the Hyūga’s most fiercely guarded monopolies.

”You now possess one of the most closely guarded medical secrets of the Hyūga Clan, Lord Kenway,” Hiashi said, his pale, pupil-less eyes solemn and heavy with the weight of his ancestors. ”I trust you understand its immense value.”

Alaric did not offer a lazy, mocking smirk, nor did he treat the transaction lightly. He accepted the box with genuine, businesslike reverence, his expression turning sharp and deeply respectful.

”Hyūga-dono,” Alaric replied, his voice a smooth, resonant baritone. ”I understand value significantly better than most rulers.”

He secured the box within his black Vanguard uniform, offering the Clan Head a firm, reassuring nod. ”The replacement seal for the Caged Bird system will be prepared exactly to our specifications. When the time comes for the application, you are more than welcome to involve Tsunade, your most trusted observers, or whomever you deem necessary during the sealing process to guarantee its integrity.”

Hiashi offered a slow, deeply respectful bow of his head, and Alaric departed, the quiet continuation of the Hyūga’s liberation secured within his coat.

The Hokage Tower

By the time Alaric strolled into the Hokage’s office, the shadows in the room were beginning to lengthen. Tsunade sat behind her massive desk, looking physically robust but administratively battered, practically drowning in towering, precarious stacks of post-war ledgers. Shizune, looking equally frazzled, offered Alaric a polite, exhausted bow before quietly exiting the office, pulling the heavy doors shut to grant them absolute privacy.

Alaric stepped forward casually, placing the sealed, chakra-locked scroll directly onto the center of Tsunade’s desk.

Tsunade glanced at the intricate, glowing wax, immediately recognizing the privacy parameters. She didn’t ask questions; she simply pressed two fingers against the seal, pulsing her unique chakra frequency to disarm the trap, and unrolled the parchment.

Alaric turned, pouring himself a small glass of water from a nearby pitcher, allowing the silence to stretch comfortably as she read.

He didn’t need to look at her or use the Mind’s Eye of the Kagura to track her progress; he could feel her subtle, emotional shifts bleeding into the ambient air. He felt her profound, genuine relief at the concrete confirmation of Iwa’s withdrawal. He sensed her brief, spiking irritation at the blunt, unapologetic arrogance of his wording regarding ōnoki’s survival. Her chakra chilled with rising concern at the mention of Madara, followed immediately by a sharp, calculating wariness at the status of Nagato and the Akatsuki.

But when she reached the final, incendiary segment of the scroll, the temperature in the room palpably changed. She went perfectly still, a knot of pure, strategic tension forming in her shoulders as she digested the recommendation regarding Jiraiya, Shikaku, and the hidden ghosts of the Leaf.

Tsunade slowly looked up from the parchment, her amber eyes locking onto his with a heavy, searching intensity.

”You’re officially recommending that I bring Jiraiya and Shikaku into this,” Tsunade stated, her voice tight, verifying the magnitude of the request.

”I am,” Alaric confirmed, taking a slow sip of his water. ”Jiraiya fundamentally deserves to know. He has carried the guilt of Minato’s death and Naruto’s suffering for over a decade. But Shikaku? Shikaku needs to know. You cannot ask a grandmaster to play a game of apocalyptic chess while actively hiding three of his most powerful queens off the board.”

Tsunade didn’t instantly agree, but she didn’t aggressively dismiss it either. She leaned back in her chair, her fingers steepled before her chin. She knew Alaric was logically correct, but the secrets were absolutely enormous. Once Jiraiya knew that his prized student and Kushina were breathing, and once Shikaku fully realized that Konoha held a restored Fourth Hokage, the Nine-Tails’ previous vessel, and Itachi Uchiha in reserve, the village’s internal, strategic calculus would change forever.

”When is Jiraiya coming back?” Alaric asked, breaking her deep contemplation.

”His latest, frustratingly vague toad-summons indicates he intends to remain in Amegakure for a few more days to properly assess the structural shifts you apparently caused,” Tsunade sighed, rubbing her temples. ”He will probably return to Konoha in about a week. When he does, I am forcing him to write a highly detailed, comprehensive report on exactly what happened in that rain-soaked city from his perspective.”

”Acceptable,” Alaric nodded, placing his glass down. ”You can brief him when he returns.”

Alaric adjusted the collar of his dark uniform, his expression shifting from a tactical advisor back to an immensely bored, expectant traveler.

”With that officially submitted,” Alaric announced, ”I am taking my leave now.”

Tsunade’s eyes flashed with immediate, profound irritation. She knew he had fiercely negotiated for two weeks of freedom, but the timing remained absolutely, laughably ridiculous. The war had literally just ended, Iwagakure was currently limping back across the border, a Kage Summit was being actively proposed, the Akatsuki was a wounded, unpredictable animal, and the greatest mass murderer in shinobi history had just been named as their next opponent.

”And,” Alaric added smoothly, twisting the knife, ”I am taking Haku with me.”

Tsunade’s hands slapped flat against her desk, her irritation blooming into sharp, political alarm.

”You are taking Haku now?” Tsunade demanded, her voice rising incredulously. ”Right after he forced the Third Tsuchikage into a desperate retreat? You do know that Haku has just become a massive, walking symbol for the people of this village, right? There are a dozen political and public relations processes we need to execute to solidify his reputation, so that other villages think twice before ever attempting to wage war or run underhanded operations against Konoha!”

Alaric didn’t argue the politics. He simply reached into his pocket, retrieved a small, intricately carved wooden scroll, and casually tossed it across the desk.

Tsunade caught it cleanly, her brow furrowing.

”That is a customized emergency-contact seal,” Alaric explained lazily. ”It is directly, permanently keyed to my personal chakra signature. The tiniest, most microscopic pulse of your chakra into that wood will alert me instantly, no matter where I am. And I will return in a flash.”

Tsunade studied the smooth, polished wood, tracing the impossibly dense, microscopic fuinjutsu matrix etched into its surface. She had never been told that Alaric originated from an entirely different dimension; from her perspective, he was simply vanishing to an undisclosed, highly secure vacation spot, taking one of her premier deterrents with him. But the sheer, flawless complexity of the spatial seal in her hand was undeniably breathtaking.

She looked up at him, shaking her head in reluctant awe.

”You know,” Tsunade murmured, a faint, nostalgic smile softening her tired features, ”sometimes, with the way you bend space and solve problems before they even happen... you really do remind me of Minato.”

Alaric’s relaxed posture instantly vanished. He stood perfectly rigid, his blue eyes narrowing as a look of genuine, profound offense crossed his pale features.

”That,” Alaric stated, his voice dropping into a register of cold, absolute indignation, ”is a deeply, deeply unfair comparison.”

Tsunade blinked, utterly bewildered by the sudden hostility. ”Because he was technically faster?”

”No,” Alaric replied, his expression becoming theatrically, intensely serious. ”Because Minato is absolutely not as handsome as I am.”

Tsunade stared at him.

The heavy, war-torn atmosphere of the Hokage’s office plummeted into a thick, dead silence that stretched for five agonizing seconds.

Tsunade let out a long, shuddering sigh. She pinched the bridge of her nose so hard her knuckles turned white, muttering quietly to her desk, ”I really, genuinely should have expected that answer.”

The quiet, deadpan humor successfully defused the rising tension, allowing the political reality to settle without a fight. Tsunade looked back up, her expression turning strictly professional as she authorized the departure.

”Fine,” Tsunade relented, securing the wooden scroll within the inner pocket of her haori. ”But the conditions remain active. If I activate this scroll, you return immediately. Haku returns with you if called. The scroll remains on my person at all times. You must return before the strategic planning for the Kage Summit begins, and I will thoroughly review your recommendations regarding Jiraiya and Shikaku while you are gone.”

”Enjoy the paperwork, Godaime,” Alaric smirked, offering a lazy, two-fingered salute before turning and strolling out of the tower.

The Kenway Compound

Alaric did not return to his sprawling estate to gather supplies or pack travel bags. He had boundless storage matrices, infinite system resources, unimaginable wealth, and personal capabilities that rendered packing entirely obsolete. Furthermore, he was simply returning home; everything he could ever possibly need was already waiting for him.

He was there for two distinct reasons: to retrieve Haku, and to inform the ghosts residing within his walls that the world outside was beginning to crack.

The Kenway Compound felt remarkably peaceful, heavily insulated from the frantic recovery of the rest of Konoha. It was not a bustling military barracks or a political hub; it was a serene, hidden sanctuary for survivors, phantoms, and those Alaric had personally ripped from the jaws of tragedy.

He gathered Minato, Kushina, and Itachi in a quiet, sunlit traditional tearoom overlooking the rear gardens.

Alaric did not mince words, nor did he offer soft, ambiguous comforts. He sat on the tatami mat, leaning forward slightly, and apologized for bringing the storm to their door.

”I am sorry for disturbing the peaceful life I promised you,” Alaric began, his voice unusually direct, stripped of its usual, lazy arrogance. ”But Konoha may desperately need you if things go catastrophically wrong while I am unavailable, or if the coming threat becomes too massive for the standing army to handle.”

He quickly explained the recommendation he had just left on Tsunade’s desk, outlining the necessity of bringing Jiraiya and Shikaku Nara into the absolute truth. Jiraiya possessed the emotional and historical right to know, and Shikaku fundamentally required the knowledge to build a surviving strategy.

Minato Namikaze responded first, his bright blue eyes entirely calm, radiating the quiet, unyielding acceptance of a man who had sacrificed his soul for his village. He was a loving father, yes, but he was also the Fourth Hokage. If Konohagakure faced total annihilation, he simply could not ignore the call.

”If the village requires us, we will answer, Alaric-san,” Minato agreed smoothly, a resolute finality in his tone. ”Although I hope that won’t happen anytime soon...”

Kushina, however, was visibly tense, her vibrant red hair seeming to bristle with fierce, maternal protectiveness. She leaned forward, her hands clenched tightly in her lap.

”Will this directly endanger Naruto?” Kushina asked urgently, her voice tight with fear. ”If Shikaku knows, will our identities be exposed to the council? Will this completely destroy the quiet, normal life we have only just begun to reclaim with our son?”

Itachi remained perfectly still, his dark, fathomless eyes absorbing the tactical reality with pragmatic detachment. His reputation had already been quietly cleared within the highest echelons, so his status as an S-rank criminal was no longer the primary issue. The true danger lay in the psychological fallout.

”If I am deployed,” Itachi noted quietly, his voice like rustling silk, ”will it destabilize the delicate truth surrounding the massacre? Will it undo the fragile healing Sasuke is currently undergoing?”

Alaric raised a hand, smoothly reassuring their deeply valid fears.

”Your identities will remain absolutely, flawlessly hidden from the public and the civilian council,” Alaric promised, his tone ringing with ironclad certainty. ”You will not be used casually as frontline infantry... maybe... Shikaku will only be authorized to consider you for highly classified, black-ops secret missions or absolute, world-ending emergency contingencies. There will be no grand, public reveals unless there is literally no other option left for survival. Naruto’s emotional stability will remain fiercely protected, and Itachi, your deployment will be handled with absolute deniability to ensure Sasuke’s psychological state is never compromised.”

They absorbed the parameters, the heavy burden of their past lives settling back onto their shoulders. They agreed, though the acceptance was heavy. They had been promised peace, but Alaric was brutally reminding them that peace rarely survived the ambitions of men like Madara Uchiha.

As the meeting concluded and Minato and Kushina quietly excused themselves to process the news, Alaric turned toward the remaining Uchiha, a small, genuine smile touching his lips.

Itachi noticed the shift in expression, his dark brows furrowing in faint, polite confusion.

”Is something amusing, Alaric-san?” Itachi asked softly.

”I can sense Sasuke’s chakra settling comfortably on the second floor,” Alaric remarked, leaning back slightly. ”I’m genuinely happy that you’ve begun to make peace with him, Itachi. Although, I must admit, it’s quite a shock that you actually managed to convince that stubborn brat to come live here... considering he aggressively tried to sell this very compound to me three years ago.”

Itachi lowered his gaze, a quiet, mournful shadow passing over his handsome features.

”Peace may be entirely too generous a word for our current dynamic,” Itachi corrected gently, his voice thick with lingering guilt. ”He listened. That is all. I am merely trying to gain a fraction of his trust at the moment.”

”Listening is already a beginning,” Alaric replied warmly, his tone shifting into the grounded, raw advice of an older brother.

He leaned forward, holding Itachi’s gaze. ”Sasuke does not need every single, agonizing explanation all at once, Itachi. He does not need the entire, bloody history of the massacre, Danzo’s machinations, Obito’s involvement, the coup, the elders’ politics, and the crushing weight of your personal guilt forced into his skull in a single, overwhelming night.”

Alaric smiled faintly. ”While Sasuke doesn’t show it, what he needs most right now is brutally simple. He just needs his older brother.”

Itachi remained perfectly quiet, but the subtle tightening of his jaw and the slight widening of his dark eyes showed that the words had struck a profound, aching chord within his soul.

”The details can come later,” Alaric promised softly. ”The desperate apologies, the visits to the graves, the ugly, political explanations, the guilt... all of that can wait... or maybe you’ve already told him everything, but still... right now, the brat just needs to know that his older brother did not come back from the dead only to abandon him again.”

Itachi closed his eyes for a long moment, internalizing the raw, human truth of the advice. When he opened them, the suffocating burden of his perfectionism seemed a fraction lighter.

”I will try,” Itachi replied softly.

”Good,” Alaric nodded, standing up from the tatami mat. ”Try repeatedly. That’s usually how family works.”

Haku’s Study Room

Leaving the tearoom, Alaric navigated the quiet, winding hallways of the compound until he reached Haku’s personal study.

The room was a beautiful, serene testament to exactly how far the boy had evolved from a mere living weapon. It was meticulously organized, smelling faintly of ink and chilled air. Scrolls of advanced hydro-dynamics and thermodynamics were stacked neatly on the shelves alongside detailed, hand-drawn diagrams mapping the molecular structure of Ice Release. Mission reports were filed with flawless precision, and the polished steel of his Kusanagi rested securely on a wooden stand nearby.

On the central desk lay a half-finished theory detailing the potential fusion of Ice Release surfaces embedded directly with localized sealing arrays... a brilliant, proactive attempt by Haku to instantly rectify the aerial weakness he had discovered during his duel with ōnoki.

Alaric stepped into the room, leaning casually against the doorframe.

Haku immediately looked up from his brush, his dark eyes bright and attentive, offering a polite, respectful nod.

”I’m going for a vacation,” Alaric announced seamlessly. ”Come with me.”

Haku did not question the directive. He didn’t ask about the location, the duration, or the tactical parameters. He simply set his brush down and immediately began to rise, moving to gather his travel packs and seal his essential weapons, because that was Haku’s fundamental nature: relentlessly disciplined, impeccably efficient, and always prepared.

”Ah... no need to pack,” Alaric said, waving a hand to stop the boy’s movement.

Haku paused mid-step, his hands hovering over a stack of blank sealing scrolls. ”Sensei?”

”You won’t need to pack anything anyway, but more importantly, we need to go now,” Alaric explained, a rare, incredibly soft smile touching his lips. ”I miss my wife.”

Haku completely froze.

His dark eyes widened by a fraction of an inch, which, for the Ice Demon, was the equivalent of a jaw-dropping gasp of utter bewilderment.

In the long, grueling years that Haku had spent traveling, training, and fighting beside his mentor, he could count the number of times Alaric had ever mentioned a wife on a single hand. Haku had seen Alaric as an infallible sensei, as a terrifying monster on the battlefield, as a brilliant strategist, a miraculous healer, a war-ending anomaly, and as a man who spoke down to multiple Kages like nothing.

But the word ”wife” revealed a deeply personal, intimate anchor to a life that Haku had never even known existed.

”Are you...” Haku began softly, his voice betraying his profound shock, ”...are you finally introducing me to your family, Sensei?”

Alaric smiled, and this time there was no trace of his usual, lazy arrogance. It was a fiercely warm, profoundly human expression.

”Yeah. My family,” Alaric confirmed softly, adding a little jest. ”My wife, Kassandra. Try not to stare too much when you meet her, kid. She’s dangerous.”

Haku stood perfectly quiet for a second, his rapid, analytical mind scrambling to process the revelation that his omnipotent sensei possessed an entire, hidden life. His thoughts instantly, terrifyingly spiraled to a single, logical conclusion: If Sensei considers her dangerous... is his wife as incomprehensibly strong as he is? Haku quickly shook the horrifying thought away, smoothing his expression back into polite serenity as he stepped away from the desk, leaving his scrolls and weapons behind.

Alaric placed a heavy, reassuring hand onto Haku’s shoulder.

He didn’t bother to fully explain the multiverse, the systemic mechanics, or the celestial void they were about to cross. He simply let the boy experience the impossibility.

The air in the study violently changed. Space folded inward, bending around them in a way that had nothing to do with the Hiraishin. Haku’s highly refined chakra perception stretched and distorted strangely, and the deeply familiar, ambient chakra signatures of Konohagakure surrounding them began to rapidly, silently vanish into nothingness.

Haku had followed his sensei across heavily guarded borders, through brutal battlefields, into the heart of hidden villages, and across the theater of war. He had watched Alaric humble a reigning Kage, bend the very fabric of space, and casually tank apocalyptic jutsus that would have surely vaporized anyone else, treating them as though they were merely a minor inconvenience.

Yet, as the familiar, vibrant chakra of the Elemental Nations completely vanished from beneath his senses, replaced by the rushing, ethereal silence of the void, Haku realized something with a quiet, dawning awe.

He remembered standing on the rooftop in Tanzaku Gai two years ago, watching the city glow as Alaric tapped the ash from his cigar. ”I’m leaving,” Alaric had said. ”Somewhere you can’t follow. Not yet. Time flows differently there...”

Despite all the years, the blood, and the impossible victories they had shared, Haku realized he had never truly known where his sensei came from.

And now, for the first time, he was about to see it.
