From Broken Family to Life Winner: A Reborn Mother's Journey

The captives watched the three of them leave, their faces a mask of bewilderment.

”Did I just hear that right? Cows?”

”And here I thought my eyes were deceiving me. What’s a delicate young lady doing at a military exercise!”

”Nothing about this is normal... This Blue Team is so weird!”

....

Su Li soon could no longer hear their chatter.

She glanced at Wu Sheng walking beside her. ”Are you going to help me see if the cows are here?”

”Mhm. We’ll find the cows, then escort you back,” Wu Sheng said, deliberately slowing his pace to match Su Li’s.

”Escort me back? Uh... that’s too much trouble. I can get back by myself,” Su Li said quickly.

Wu Sheng didn’t answer.

Wa Wa Lian smiled and said, ”If our Boss said he’s taking you back, he’s taking you back. Don’t worry about it.”

’They’d accidentally dragged Su Li and her two cows into their exercise, and she’d even sprained her ankle in one of their traps. How could they just leave her be?’

”I just feel like I’m imposing.” Su Li smiled, but seeing the resolute expressions on their faces, she didn’t press the issue.

’They were so kind. She was truly grateful.’

”What’s your name?” Wa Wa Lian asked.

”My name is Su Li. Li, as in ’pear,’” Su Li replied. ”What about you two? May I ask your names?”

”Of course.” Wa Wa Lian chuckled and told her his name.

He then pointed to Wu Sheng. ”This is our Boss.”

”Wu Sheng,” he stated, breaking his silence.

It took Su Li a moment to process. ”It’s nice to meet you both.”

Wu Sheng stopped in his tracks, his gaze fixed ahead. ”Cows.”

Su Li looked over. ”That’s them!”

”I’ll go round them up.” Wa Wa Lian immediately took off running.

The loud truck from before had put the two cows, who had just calmed down, on high alert again. When Wa Wa Lian approached to herd them, they startled and immediately bolted.

”Hey, don’t run!” As Wa Wa Lian shouted, the two cows charged straight toward Su Li and Wu Sheng.

”Why are they running again!” Su Li’s expression soured.

”Watch out!” Amid Wa Wa Lian’s cries, the two cows barreled toward Su Li and Wu Sheng.

”Move!” Just as Wu Sheng was about to pull Su Li out of the way, she instead stepped forward and let out a sharp cry.

The cows were nearly upon them. Wu Sheng’s expression changed drastically. ”Watch out!”

He lunged forward to pull Su Li away, but her shout unexpectedly stopped one of the cows. It suddenly spun around, its hooves kicking high into the air.

In the blink of an eye, before anyone knew what was happening, one of the flying hooves connected with Wu Sheng.

”Boss!”

”Be careful!”

Following the two shouts of alarm, the cows disappeared into the nearby woods, and Wu Sheng collapsed to the ground.

”Hey, are you okay?”

Su Li and Wa Wa Lian rushed to his side simultaneously.

Wa Wa Lian took one look and breathed a sigh of relief.

Su Li was frantic. ”Boss... Wu Sheng? Are you all right? Can you hear me?”

Wu Sheng didn’t respond. He was completely still.

Su Li quickly checked for his breathing. Her face paled. ”He’s not breathing!”

Wa Wa Lian was horrified. ”Impossible!”

’The Boss is so tough, how could a single kick from a cow stop him from breathing?!’

He hurriedly checked for a pulse.

”He’s really not breathing. It looks like the kick knocked the wind out of him,” Su Li said, looking at Wu Sheng’s chest.

”No way, he still has a pulse.” Wa Wa Lian checked for breathing himself and found... he really wasn’t.

”How can this be!” Wa Wa Lian was stunned.

”We have to revive him, now!” Su Li looked up. ”Artificial respiration. Do you know how?”

Wa Wa Lian: ”Huh? I don’t.”

”You don’t?!” Su Li was incredulous.

”I’ll do it!” she said through gritted teeth.

Su Li moved fast. Following the procedures she had once learned, she tilted Wu Sheng’s head back, pinched his nose, and lifted his chin. Then, under Wa Wa Lian’s incredulous gaze, she lowered her head and breathed into his mouth.

”You...” Wa Wa Lian was flabbergasted.

Su Li paid him no mind and leaned down to give Wu Sheng another breath.

In the middle of the breath, Wu Sheng’s eyes suddenly snapped open.

At that moment, Su Li hadn’t yet pulled away.

Wu Sheng’s pupils contracted violently.

Su Li scrambled back, letting go of him, and breathed a sigh of relief. ”You’re awake!”

”Does it hurt a lot? Where exactly on your chest is the pain?” Su Li asked him.

Wu Sheng stared at her intently, saying nothing. Su Li frowned, and just as she reached out to touch him, he shot bolt upright.

His grimy face betrayed nothing, but his ears instantly flushed crimson.

”What were you just doing?”

His voice was hoarse, his face a mask of shock, as if he still hadn’t processed what happened.

”Artificial respiration. The kick knocked the wind out of you,” Su Li explained.

Before Wu Sheng could utter a word, Wa Wa Lian, who had been frozen in shock, suddenly let out a strangled cry.

”You...” He pointed at Su Li, then looked at Wu Sheng. ”Boss, she...”

’Their reactions were making her a little awkward. Artificial respiration was just a life-saving technique. In the future, it would be no big deal, but it seemed to be a problem in this era.’

”Uh...” She gave a wry smile and held up her hands. ”It was just first aid.”

Wa Wa Lian still looked dumbfounded. He started to say something, but Wu Sheng cut him off.

Wu Sheng looked deeply at Su Li. ”I know.”

”Oh, good. I hope you don’t get the wrong idea. I wasn’t trying to take advantage of you...” Su Li explained.

’What does she mean, ”not trying to take advantage of you”...? Hearing those words from a young woman was really something else...’ The expression on Wu Sheng’s face was priceless.

Wa Wa Lian couldn’t help but blurt out, ”Who’s taking advantage of whom, exactly...”

In this era, the notion of a woman ”taking advantage” of a man didn’t really exist; it was almost always the other way around.

Su Li glanced at Wa Wa Lian before turning back to Wu Sheng. ”Are you in pain? How does the place where the cow kicked you feel?”

”I’m fine.” Wu Sheng’s expression grew even more spectacular.

Wa Wa Lian’s expression was just as indescribable.

’Just a moment ago, he’d been a force of nature, capturing the Red Team members at lightning speed. The invincible Wu Sheng, creating yet another legend for himself... only to end up...’

’...knocked out by a single kick from a cow.’

’How utterly ridiculous!’

’This was definitely going down in their invincible Boss’s book of embarrassing moments!’

”You should still check it carefully. If it’s bruised or painful, you absolutely must go to a hospital and get it checked out. You don’t want to risk an internal injury.”

Su Li did her best to ignore their spectacular expressions as she advised Wu Sheng.

’This had only happened because they were trying to help her with the cows. Faced with the same situation again, she would make the same choice in a heartbeat.’

’No matter how they saw her, her conscience was clear.’

’Thankfully, they were strangers. Even though they’d exchanged names, it was just a chance encounter. They would probably forget all about this soon enough.’

As these thoughts flashed through her mind, Su Li kept her eyes on Wu Sheng, waiting for his response.

Wu Sheng rubbed the spot where the hoof had connected. ”It’s nothing.”

His poor ears were still bright red. Seeing this, Wa Wa Lian was struck by a sudden inspiration. He stared blankly at Su Li and blurted out,

”Our Boss isn’t married yet.”

Su Li was completely baffled. ”Huh?”

”Shut up,” Wu Sheng suddenly roared at Wa Wa Lian. ”Go find the cows!”
