Married the Sick Uncle – Just Waiting to Inherit His Fortune

Anne Sutton was left speechless. ’Am I supposed to be some kind of femme fatale and tell him, ”Baby, you have to betray the whole world for me. Only that can prove your love”?’

Did it really have to be like that?

She picked up her phone and sent a message to Nathan Fawcett. ”Just come back and eat first! I said the wrong thing, and I’m sorry. I won’t say it again, okay?”

Nathan Fawcett didn’t reply.

Anne Sutton texted him again. ”Nathan, the food is delicious today! Come and have a taste!”

Nathan Fawcett still didn’t reply.

Anne Sutton looked at Caleb Summers and sighed. ”I’m never sticking up for you again.”

Caleb Summers said, ”How is this my fault?”

’He was clearly the one throwing a fit!’

’So how did I end up the bad guy?’

’Is everything my fault?’

Anne Sutton looked at Caleb Summers and said, ”I should have just kept my mouth shut. I don’t know what I was thinking, trying to stick up for you. Now look, he’s ignoring us completely! What should we do? You should hurry up and message him.”

”I’m not doing it,” Caleb Summers said. ”It’s a matter of principle; I won’t enable him. If he ever leaves the Linden Group, I’m not going to be friends with a man who has nothing. And it’s not just me—no one in his circle will. He won’t be Ethan Linden or the Head of the Linden Family anymore. He’ll just be a good-for-nothing with nothing to his name. If that day ever comes, I’d rather just cut ties with him now.”

Caleb Summers’s tone was placid as he calmly stated the way of the world.

’He’s right.’

’Only when you have status and position will people respect you. Without them, you have nothing at all.’

Nathan Fawcett returned from outside, reaching the door to the private room just in time to hear what Caleb Summers was saying.

Caleb Summers looked at Anne Sutton and asked, ”What about you? If you had to choose between your career and Ethan, would you choose Ethan?”

’He could see what kind of person Anne Sutton was.’

’She wasn’t ruled by her heart.’

’She was just like him.’

’Otherwise, she wouldn’t have tried to reason with Nathan Fawcett like that earlier.’

Hearing Caleb Summers’s question, Anne Sutton said, ”I wouldn’t give up my career for anyone.”

Caleb Summers smiled. ”You’re smart, and that’s the correct choice. Nathan was starved for affection as a child, so the moment he realized he was falling for you, he started making bad decisions. I need to make him see that before he goes down the wrong path.”

Anne Sutton looked at Caleb Summers without a word.

Nathan Fawcett was standing at the entrance when Mrs. Sutton came over. Looking at him, she said, ”Ethan, why don’t you go in?”

Nathan Fawcett looked at Mrs. Sutton. ”Auntie.”

Hearing the voices, Anne Sutton came out and saw Nathan Fawcett standing by the door. ’Even though he didn’t reply, he must have seen my texts, calmed down, and come back.’

’But I didn’t expect him to come back just in time to hear what I said to Caleb Summers.’

Anne Sutton looked at Nathan Fawcett and said, ”Nathan.”

Nathan Fawcett looked at her, his face cool and distant.

His gaze, which was usually so gentle, had turned cold and indifferent as he looked at her.

’He had heard every word she said.’

’She said she wouldn’t give up her career for him.’

’That made him—the one willing to give up everything for her—look like a fucking idiot.’

’Maybe Caleb Summers was right.’

’If you have nothing, why would any woman devote herself to you completely?’

’How could he have forgotten? The only reason Anne Sutton had gotten close to him in the first place was because he was rich, because he had everything!’

’Now that they were together and he’d had a taste of happiness, he’d forgotten all about that.’

Nathan Fawcett walked in. Caleb Summers saw him. ”You’re back?”

Nathan Fawcett sat down. ”Let’s eat.”

Anne Sutton also sat back down.

’He didn’t seem angry anymore, but there was a subtle sense of distance about him.’

’Something felt different, but she couldn’t quite put her finger on what it was.’

Mrs. Sutton looked at Anne Sutton and asked, ”How’s the food?”

Anne Sutton said, ”It’s delicious.”

Ian also said, ”Grandma, it’s delicious.”

Mrs. Sutton smiled.

Anne Sutton said, ”Mom, have you eaten? Why don’t you sit down and eat with us?”

Mrs. Sutton said, ”No, thanks. I’m not hungry right now. I’ll eat later. You guys go ahead. I still have other guests to attend to.”

After saying that, she left.

After she left, Anne Sutton sat to one side, putting food on Ian’s plate.

Seeing Nathan Fawcett just sitting there, she also put some food on his plate. ”This one’s good.”

’Usually, he was so happy when she did that for him.’

’But right now, he didn’t look happy at all.’

Anne Sutton looked at him but didn’t say anything else.

After dinner, as the group was leaving the private room, they happened to see Anna Linden. Mrs. Sutton was leading her in, saying, ”Right this way. I saved a seat for you. I knew you would come.”

Seeing Anna Linden, Anne Sutton was a little surprised.

Caleb Summers took the initiative to greet her, ”Auntie Linden.”

Anna Linden saw the group, not expecting to run into them just by coming out for a meal.

Mrs. Sutton stood to the side, looked at them, and asked, ”Oh, you all know each other?”

Anne Sutton looked at her mother, then glanced at Anna Linden and said, ”Dr. Linden.”

She walked over and introduced her to her mother, ”This is Ethan Linden’s mother.”

Hearing this, Mrs. Sutton glanced at Anna Linden in surprise. Anna Linden was so fashionably dressed and looked so young that Mrs. Sutton hadn’t even considered the possibility.

Upon hearing this, Anna Linden looked from Anne Sutton to Mrs. Sutton, recalling that Mrs. Sutton had previously mentioned she was in the area because her daughter worked nearby.

’So...’

’This is Anne Sutton’s mother?’

The news was quite a surprise.

Anna Linden followed Mrs. Sutton into the private room.

Mrs. Sutton looked at Anna Linden, poured her some tea, and said, ”Ethan has been staying at my place recently. I had no idea he was your son.”

Anna Linden looked at Mrs. Sutton and said, ”I also had no idea you were Anne Sutton’s mother.”

’Nathan Fawcett had asked her to meet Anne Sutton’s mother before, but she had refused.’

’She’d been in a foul mood that night and had even come here to chat with Mrs. Sutton for ages. It was almost laughable, thinking about it now.’

’If she had known it would turn out like this, she wouldn’t have even bothered arguing with Nathan Fawcett!’

’After all, she had already met the person she’d been trying to avoid.’

’Besides, she had a good impression of Mrs. Sutton. For years, whenever she had nowhere to turn, she would come here to talk with her.’

’After so many years as a powerful businesswoman, she had very few friends she could confide in.’

’But she found she could talk about a lot of things with Mrs. Sutton.’

’Mrs. Sutton was an excellent listener.’

Anne Sutton stood outside, peering worriedly into the private room. She glanced at Caleb Summers and asked, ”Dr. Linden isn’t going to give my mom a hard time, is she? Why is she here all of a sudden?”

’I just feel like her showing up here means something big is about to happen.’

’It’s one thing for her to find fault with me, but coming here to bother my mother would be crossing a line!’

Caleb Summers stroked his chin, analyzing the situation seriously. ”Hard to say. She might tell your mother to take you and stay far away from him.”
