I Am Your Natural Enemy

Chapter 398: Chapter 169: Spatial Fluctuations, Cyber Netherworld (Thanks to the Sect Leader I See Green Mountains Stretching Miles, 5k) - Part 2

”Yeah, and I’ve got some other missions too. The folks from Europa aren’t convenient to operate in Divine Land—after all, I have a Divine Land face, so it’ll be easier for me.”

”Whoa, you’re actually gonna be a traitor now...” Misha looked utterly disgusted.

”You don’t know shit. I’m just looking for a chance to bail. Once I get to Divine Land, anyone there who’s got a problem with me can come bite me if they’ve got the guts.”

”You think they’ll just let you go? Are you kidding me?”

”Heh heh heh, of course I’m not volunteering for this. It’s a mission they assigned me. Word is, they really couldn’t find anyone suitable—no one qualified would dare take it, since they’ve already lost a bunch before me. As for me, I had no choice, totally unwilling, but after three rounds of wrangling I was forced to leave the land of freedom. Can’t blame me for that.”

”Can you talk about it?”

”Nothing I can’t say. Last time, our dean said he was taking me on a mission. When we got there, I realized it was actually a Church op—they wanted to wipe out a group of Dark Creatures and a mysterious merchant. They say that merchant’s from Divine Land.”

That guy’s seriously strong. I tried to lock down the space, and he still managed to force his way out, even daring a spatial jump with no coordinates.

I thought for sure he was a goner, destined to be lost forever.

But the Church people, and even our academy’s dean, believed that guy was something else, probably still alive.

So now they want to send me to Divine Land to track him down.

Ha, as soon as I get to Divine Land, I’ll be tracking jack shit.

My mom’s even helped me ask around. That mysterious merchant, around here they call him the Wandering Merchant.

He’s so scared of running into anyone from the Scorching Sun Department, he’s on their wanted list.

Even with that, they had to mobilize a bunch of their top people, and the guy still got away.

I’m going nuts, getting stuck with their missions, those bastards even held up my graduation thesis, saying I’m missing hands-on fieldwork.

Once I’m back, if I get busted, I’ll sell them out first.”

”Li Linlin, you are such a sly fox.” Misha was actually kinda stunned—she’d really thought her bestie was about to turn traitor, but now those foreigners definitely won’t suspect a thing.

”If my major existed back home, you think I’d wanna be here? So damn annoying.”

”You better be careful. With your skills, they’re not letting you walk just like that.”

”Relax, with the way ghosts keep popping up here, what they really need are people from my field. Me, though? I’m just the type who looks high-end but can’t even teleport—a total loser. Like pouring a ton of resources into a fringe subject and getting zero results. At least for now, no one’s paying much attention.”

As the two of them were chatting, there was a sudden knock at the door.

Misha’s face changed, but she quickly pulled herself together, put on a jacket, grabbed a pair of black-rimmed glasses, and tied up her hair in one swift motion.

”Babe, somebody’s here for me. Hold on a sec, let me check who it is.”

She opened the door and saw two people in overalls, carrying tools.

”Hello, something’s wrong inside the AC pipes. We’re here for an inspection.”

”Oh, go ahead.” Misha stepped back a few paces, holding up her phone and saying into it, ”They’re here to check the AC, should be done pretty quick.”

The visitors didn’t care that Misha was pointing her phone at them, just took out some instruments, checked for two minutes, and left.

Once the door was closed, Misha went and checked everything herself, made sure they hadn’t left anything behind, and only then let out a long breath.

”Scorching Sun Department people.” Li Linlin looked serious. ”Those instruments they had, I recognize them—they’re custom. Used to detect spatial fluctuations. Specifically, they’re looking for descent waveforms.”

”So it was you who brought them here? You scared the hell out of me!” Misha realized it must’ve been her bestie’s earlier distance attack that triggered a fluctuation.

”You seriously need to get out of here. This is off—the response was way too fast. Barely ten minutes and they’ve already zeroed in on this building. They must’ve set up some high-powered, super-precise monitoring gear nearby, running full time. Something’s off about this place. Get as far from here as you can.”

”Too late. I just landed a job here, as an assistant to a top lawyer, and the pay’s great. Once they’re done with today’s check, I’ll bolt. You think leaving now would make me more obvious?”

”Well... just be careful. I’m heading back in a few days anyway.”

...

Feng Yao listened to his subordinate’s report, his tightly knit brows slowly relaxing.

”It’s confirmed?”

”Confirmed. Ran the standard inspection protocol three times—absolutely nothing descended. Must’ve been a false alarm from the device, maybe a natural fluctuation. After all, per the Minister’s orders, the new detector’s sensitivity is cranked up to max.”

”That villa in the North Villa District, we’ve got eyes on it, right? Anything come out?”

”Nothing. Past few days, just the one registered Nether Soul, nothing else has emerged.”

”What about on the Nether Soul Realm side?”

”No activity at the portal either.”

”Got it. Keep watching.”

Feng Yao sighed and jotted everything down in his log.

Troubled times... The changes in this second stage of Spiritual Qi Resurgence are so much faster than the first.

Today, another Horseman showed up, one who can walk the Underworld Road.

If Wen Yan were around, he wouldn’t worry so much about the villa district. Wen Yan trains in martial arts in the backyard every day—his Yang Energy is getting so strong it naturally keeps a lid on the portal back there.

But now Wen Yan’s gone to Guanzhong County, so Feng Yao just has to be even more vigilant.

...

At the same time, as the resurgence accelerated, an odd new rhythm subtly filled the world. Influenced by it, in the Wenyan Family’s basement, a jade pendant wrapped in talismans began to absorb Yin Qi.
