Daddy Always Gets Jealous

Qin Shaonan didn’t explain.

Actually, it wasn’t just an excuse; Commissar Zhang had mentioned this matter before.

Military secrets leakage?

Ha!

He was quite eager to see what evidence would eventually be found.

Qin Shaojin opened a bottle of beer, took a swig, ”Second Brother, you continue your fight alone, I’m going to study and strive to be a good student in the future.”

Qin Shaonan looked up, glanced at Qin Shaojin, ”A good student?”

Qin Shaojin smiled, ”Aren’t I?”

Qin Shaonan, ”You’re too old.”

Qin Shaojin, ”Too old, but I can make up for it with intelligence. It’s fine, what others complete in four years, I can finish quickly. I’ve already started preparing for graduate school, planning to complete my bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. in three years. Does that sound feasible to you?”

Qin Shaonan looked at Qin Shaojin without responding.

Qin Shaojin took another sip of beer, ”Staying here now, I feel so damn stifled and bored. I want to find Shen You and the others, I heard they’ve already got things quite organized.”

Qin Shaonan, ”Talk less, eat more, and drink more.”

Qin Shaojin, ”...”

Isn’t it just jealousy that he can leave now?

Previously, Grandpa hoped that they would achieve something in the military, but who would’ve thought Grandpa was so open-minded? Both my second brother and I respected our own opinions.

After dinner, Qin Shaojin carefully folded the military uniform he didn’t need to hand over, packed it into a box, lifted it, and walked directly out of the dormitory area.

At the gate of the military district, he saw the car arranged by Fourth Uncle from afar.

He got into the car, opened the backseat, glanced inside, and quickly closed the window without looking again.

Originally, he thought he wouldn’t have a shred of reluctance when leaving, but it turned out to be very uncomfortable. I wonder how Brother Huo felt back then. Probably even more heavy-hearted than now.

...

His phone rang as he was nearing Hong Kong.

He glanced at it; it was his second brother calling, so he answered.

Qin Shaonan, ”When you get to Hong Kong, take good care of your second sister-in-law.”

Qin Shaojin, ”Don’t worry, second brother.”

Qin Shaonan didn’t speak further, hung up the call, and sat there smoking.

Three months later

He was summoned to the commissar’s office.

Commissar Zhang looked at Qin Shaonan, ”There’s something I want to talk to you about; don’t be impulsive.”

Qin Shaonan looked at Commissar Zhang, ”What is it?”

Commissar Zhang sighed, ”Comrade Shaoling was sacrificed.”

Qin Shaonan stood there, suddenly feeling a chill all over, ”You... what did you say? Say it again?”

Commissar Zhang, ”Comrade Shaoling was sacrificed.”

Qin Shaonan stood there silently, lit a cigarette, his eyes as dark as ink.

Commissar Zhang gently patted Qin Shaonan’s shoulder, ”She heard that the case of anti-drug trafficking in Donggang was ordered by Zhan Hui to shoot directly without considering Comrade Gu Jinnan’s life or death. They had a conflict when executing the undercover mission, and the two exposed their targets.”

Qin Shaonan didn’t respond, closing his eyes in deep pain.

Commissar Zhang, ”I’ve already notified your third uncle and Jinnan to attend Comrade Shaoling’s memorial service.”

Qin Shaonan didn’t speak, finished his cigarette, and left the commissar’s office.

He returned to the dormitory, drove back to Hong Kong, and went straight to the Qin Family.

As soon as he entered, he heard Grandma’s heart-wrenching cries, feeling a pang of discomfort.

Seeing Qin Shaonan enter, the old man with red eyes looked up at him, ”You’re back?”

Qin Shaonan, ”Hmm.”

The old lady stopped crying, looked at Qin Shaonan, ”Second boy, Xiaosan has quit, you should too. As long as you all are safe and sound, Grandma asks for nothing else.”

Qin Shaonan, ”...”

The old man looked at Qin Shaonan, ”Has your retirement application been approved?”
