Myriad Heavens: Rise of the Rune God

Chapter 352: Chapter 7: Understanding

Ash drifted upward from a deep, dreamless darkness.

The climb was slow, like swimming through thick, warm syrup. For a long time he could not tell where his body ended and the blackness began. Then, little by little, sensation returned.

The first thing he noticed was the silence.

The dormitory was completely quiet. No footsteps in the corridor. No muffled voices from the courtyard. No soft hum of the daytime ventilation systems. Only the faint, steady pulse of the academy’s night-cycle energy field pressed gently against the walls. When he finally forced his eyelids open, the room was wrapped in the dim blue glow of the emergency lighting strips. Evening had long since passed. Deep night had settled over Azure Cloud Martial Academy.

He lay still for several seconds, simply breathing, letting his senses recalibrate.

Something was fundamentally different.

”Something” was an understatement. His whole being felt changed.

His body felt lighter. Not weaker — lighter in the way a perfectly balanced, master-crafted sword felt lighter than a crude, poorly forged one. At the same time it felt incredibly dense, as though every muscle fiber, every tendon, and every bone had been packed with something far more solid than before. When he shifted his weight even slightly, the lumpy mattress responded with unusual clarity. His new proprioception mapped the exact pressure points under his shoulders and hips with millimeter precision. He could feel the thin weave of the blanket against his skin, the tiny folds in the fabric, the cool air that slipped through the half-closed shutters and brushed across his face.

His breathing came deeper and smoother. Each inhalation drew in a volume of air that felt impossible for his previous lung capacity. Each exhalation carried away a faint trace of residual cellular fatigue. Even his skin felt different. When he reached up and rubbed his thumb against his cheek, it felt tougher, tighter, as if a thin, invisible layer of resilience had been woven into his epidermis overnight. His fingers came away with a flake of dried blood — the last remnant of the nosebleed he had suffered before passing out. He wiped it away, noticing the faint metallic scent that still clung to it.

Ash pushed himself up into a sitting position.

The movement was fluid, almost eerily smooth, driven by a coiled kinetic potential he had never possessed before. Mild dizziness still rolled through his head, and a heavy mental fog clung to his thoughts like wet wool. The Boundless Origin Martial Soul had continued its passive refinement the entire time he was unconscious, steadily nourishing and strengthening his soul with ambient cosmic energy. Yet the earlier expenditure of projecting his consciousness across the multiverse had been too great for a complete recovery. His mind still felt scraped raw, like a muscle pushed to absolute failure during a heavy lift.

Then the knowledge hit him.

It was not a sudden, violent flood this time. It was already there — vast, layered, and waiting.

Profound insights, battle techniques, combat instincts, and the structural knowledge of a superior martial physique occupied large portions of his consciousness like carefully stacked heavy crates in a massive warehouse. Everything felt dense and heavy with meaning, far beyond the simple, straightforward academy manuals he had received earlier that day. And yes, that included the powerful Seven Star Martial Art.

Ash pressed the heel of his hand against his forehead and let out a low, incredulous breath.

”This is only three percent...?”

The words came out soft, slightly raspy, and thoroughly disbelieving.

He closed his eyes again and turned his awareness inward, beginning the slow, meticulous work of sorting through what he had brought back from the golden-string universe.

The first layer was pure battle instinct.

It was not a set of memorized movements or a rigid choreography of strikes. It was a living, breathing sense of distance, timing, and threat. He could feel how his body now wanted to position itself in an imaginary fight. His mind automatically calculated weight distribution, the optimal angle of his shoulders, the precise micro-second when an opponent’s balance would be weakest. The instincts were refined to a degree that felt almost predatory. He felt like a panther that had suddenly realized it had been given razor-sharp claws.

A quiet thrill ran through him.

So this is what real talent feels like...

Beneath that lay fragments of actual combat techniques and battle arts. Some were incomplete sequences of strikes and footwork, like pages torn from a master’s journal. Others were more conceptual: methods of channeling force through the body in explosive, whip-like bursts; ways of using minimal physical movement to generate maximum kinetic power; principles of continuous, suffocating pressure that never allowed an opponent to regain their rhythm. Even in their fragmented state, they radiated a lethal, elegant quality that the ordinary academy techniques simply did not possess.

Deeper still were the insights into energy circulation and body tempering.

These were not simple meridian diagrams or basic breathing exercises. They were sophisticated, microscopic understandings of how cosmic energy could be refined inside the cells themselves. He could see how micro-cycles of tempering could gradually transform flesh and bone at a fundamental biological level, and how to reinforce the body’s structural integrity against increasingly destructive forces. The foundational blueprint of a vastly superior martial physique sat among these insights, currently being slowly, painfully integrated into his own cellular structure.

And underlying everything was pure martial aptitude — the raw, unadulterated capacity to improve through training at a speed that had previously been impossible for him.

Ash moved through the information slowly, examining each piece with careful attention. The sheer density of it was intimidating. Full digestion would clearly require deliberate practice, repeated circulation, and time. These were not things that could be mastered in a single afternoon.

Then something unexpected happened.

As he continued examining the content, he realized he was actually understanding it.

Concepts that should have been completely opaque to his previous, thoroughly mediocre talent were unfolding with surprising, crystalline clarity. Layers of meaning revealed themselves one after another without the usual frustrating wall of confusion. He was not instantly mastering everything, but he was progressing through the material at a steady, natural pace that felt almost effortless compared to any previous learning experience he had ever had.

Ash paused in the darkness of his room, genuinely surprised.

He had expected the profundity of a Martial Saint’s accumulated knowledge to leave him completely lost, staring at gibberish. Instead, the pathways of understanding kept opening.

A slow, disbelieving smile spread across his face.

So this is what it feels like... to not be mediocre anymore.

The realization sent a quiet wave of emotion through him — part awe, part excitement, part something deeper and harder to name. For the first time in his life, the path ahead did not feel limited by his own average talent. The ceiling that had always existed above him had cracked.

And through that crack, he could finally see the sky.

Ash sat in the blue-lit silence for a long time, simply feeling the changes settle into him. His heart beat steady and strong. His muscles hummed with quiet potential. Somewhere deep inside his dantian, the Boundless Origin Martial Soul pulsed like a distant nebula, calm and endless.

He raised one hand and slowly closed it into a fist.

The motion was ordinary. Yet the force that gathered in his knuckles was not.

A thin, almost invisible ripple of power traveled down his forearm and settled into his bones. It was only a fraction of what the Martial Saint version of himself could produce, but it was already more than the old Ash Apeiron had ever been capable of generating.

He opened his fist again and stared at his palm.

Three point two percent.

If this was only three point two percent...

Ash let out a soft, almost disbelieving laugh that barely disturbed the quiet of the room.

Then he lowered his hand, closed his eyes once more, and began the careful work of circulating the new energy pathways through his body — one slow, deliberate cycle at a time — while the deep night of Azure Cloud Martial Academy continued to hold its breath around him.
